France and the Politics of European Economic and Monetary Union (St Antony's), by V. Caton

Review

'Valerie Caton's book is a sure-footed, impressively researched and very readable guide to the conception, negotiation and execution of the EU's most high-risk project to date. Rarely has France's decisive role in bending economics to politics been laid so bare. Her book is essential reading for understanding the fissile interplay of politics, economics and diplomatic poker which has brought Europe to its current crisis of economic performance and political legitimacy. For all Germany's growing economic primacy, Caton leaves her readers in no doubt about France's key role in - and special responsibility for - resolving that crisis.' Maurice Fraser, Professor of Practice in European Politics and Head of the European Institute, London School of Economics, UK

'François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl sought to build a haven of stability, peace and prosperity at the heart of Europe. Two decades after the end of their historic partnership, the EU offers only austerity for too many of its citizens. The reasons lie in the keystone of the Mitterrand-Kohl project, the euro, whose story Valerie Caton tells, drawing on previously unused archive material in this excellent book.Caton's great strength is to demonstrate the rationality of decisions as they were taken at the time, while underlining their longer-term irrationality, and their unintended consequences. Her tale is therefore both sober there is explanation without finger-pointing and sobering, because it tells of the hole at the heart of the euro, a currency lacking the economic and political underpinnings to withstand the perfect storm that broke over the world financial system in 2007-8. That ways were found to stave off complete disaster testifies to the determination of European leaders to make it work. That they had to be improvised testifies to the weaknesses of the initial project weaknesses to date only partially remedied.' Andrew Knapp, Professor of French Politics and Contemporary History, University of Reading, UK

'Caton gives a brisk and clear chronological summary of the decades of position papers, election campaigns, summits and high-level committees. She goes beyond her French focus to describe the infighting between the German Bundesbank and the country's more European-minded politicians.' Edward Hadas, Reuters Breakingviews blog

About the Author Dr. Valerie Caton's career in the British Diplomatic Service included overseas postings to Brussels, Stockholm, Paris and as Ambassador to Finland. Twice a Senior Associate Member at St. Antony's College, Oxford, she is currently Visiting Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading, UK.

Includes Shatner's own quotes about his life and career.

"I'm not a Starfleet commander, or T. J. Hooker. I don't live on Starship NCC-1701...or own a phaser. I don't know anybody named Bones, Sulu, or Spock. And no, I've never had green alien sex, but I'm sure it'd be quite an evening. I speak English and French, not Klingon! I drink Labatt's, not Romulan Ale! And when someone says to me 'live long and prosper', I seriously mean it when I say, 'get a life'. My doctor's name is not McCoy, it's Ginsberg. And tribbles were puppets, not real animals. PUPPETS! And when I speak, I never, ever talk like Every. Word. Is. Its. Own. Sentence. I live in California, but I was raised in Montreal. And I believe in Priceline.com, where you never have to pay full price for airline tickets, hotels, and car rentals! I've appeared on stage at Stratford, at Carnegie Hall, Albert Hall, and the Monkland Theatre in NDG. And, yes, I've gone where no man has gone before, but...I was in Mexico and her father gave me permission! My name is William Shatner, and I am Canadian!" (William Shatner)

It almost goes without saying that nobody occupies a place in pop culture that remotely resembles the one in which William Shatner finds himself. As an actor who has been about as critically acclaimed as he has been lampooned, Shatner seems to relish every aspect of his image, whether he's making fun of himself and others on a celebrity roast or appearing in humorous commercials as a spokesman for Priceline.com.

Given the length and scope of his career, it's easy to forget that Shatner started as a pretty typical dramatic actor in his early years, including appearances in Judgment at Nuremberg, episodes of The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and even the Western series Outlaws.

Excerpt from Moral Principles in EducationIt is quite clear that there cannot be two sets of ethical principles, or two forms of ethical theory, one for life in the school, and the other for life outside of the school. As conduct is one, the principles of conduct are one also. The frequent tendency to discuss the morals of the school, as if the latter were an institution by itself, and as if its morale could be stated without reference to the general scientific principles of conduct, appears to me highly unfortunate. Principles are the same. It is the special points of contact and application which vary with different conditions. I shall make no apology, accordingly, for commencing with statements which seem to me of universal validity and scope, and afterwards considering the moral work of the school as a special case of these general principles. I may be forgiven also for adding that the limits of space forbid much in the way of amplification and qualification, and that, so far as form is concerned, the material will therefore be presented in somewhat dogmatic shape. I hope, however, it will not be found dogmatic in spirit, for the principles stated are all of them, in my judgment, capable of purely scientific justification. All ethical theory is two faced. It requires to be considered from two different points of view, and stated in two different sets of terms. These are the social and the psychological. We do not have here, however, a division, but simply a distinction. Psychological ethics does not cover part of the field, and then require social ethics to include the territory left untouched. Both cover the entire sphere of conduct. Nor does the distinction mark a compromise, or a fusion, as if at one point the psychological view broke down, and needed to be supplemented by the sociological.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Review

“This[is a] forceful and sound little manual which is an interpretation of consistent psychology, ethics and sociology with reference to moral education in the school.”—Journal of Educational Psychology

“The most important work we have upon the subject of moral education.”           —Elementary School Teacher

“A forceful statement of the responsibility of schools in the moral training of children.”—American Library Association Booklist

About the Author John Dewey(1859 1952) was anAmerican philosopher, psychologistandeducational reformerwhose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey was an important early developer of the philosophy ofpragmatismand one of the founders offunctional psychology. He was a major representative ofprogressive educationandliberalism. In 1894 Dewey joined the newly foundedUniversity of Chicago(1894 1904) where he developed his belief in an empirically based theory of knowledge, becoming associated with the newly emerging Pragmatic philosophy. His time at the University of Chicago resulted in four essays collectively entitledThought and its Subject-Matter, which was published with collected works from his colleagues at Chicago under the collective titleStudies in Logical Theory(1903). During that time Dewey also initiated theUniversity of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he was able to actualize the pedagogical beliefs that provided material for his first major work on education, The School and Social Progress(1899).In 1899, Dewey was elected president of theAmerican Psychological Association. From 1904 until his retirement in 1930 he was professor of philosophy at both Columbia Universityand Columbia University'sTeachers College. In 1905 he became president of theAmerican Philosophical Association. He was a longtime member of theAmerican Federation of Teachers.

Perhaps I am just not one for reading philosophy, or as I like to think, many philosophers simply do not understand how to write in a clear fasion. At the bottom of it, Dewey's ideas for ethics in education are as vital now as they were when he wrote it back 1909, but perhaps if he could have made his points in some way more coherent (at a little over 50 pages, this still feels bloated, I imagine it could be clearly stated in about 10 pages), the entire US educational system would have been where it is now by the 20's--and that truly would have been something revolutionary. Dewey goes so far as essentially voicing his own primitive theory of constructivism, along with revolutionary concepts such as 'those who do the doing do the learning'--namely that teaching should be more student oriented and should first and foremost engage the student. There even seems to be a bit of the 'content versus process' debate here, and yet I think there must be more modern writers who have stated this with greater clarity. For people who enjoy reading terse philosophical monologues (and this certainly is still quite readable--I've seen much worse), then certainly pick up this book both for its historical value and a relatively interesting exploration of the ethics in teaching. If your a busy grad student like me though, this may not seem like it is worth the frustration--especially when you can open up almost any teaching journal and see the same ideas. Sure, they didn't say if first, but I don't fall asleep reading it.

Clifford Hearn at his hilarious best as he roams through a farcical story of a bishop, a comedian, a professor, a brothel, a prison and eels. A master piece. It is really dedicated to comedians as they make us laugh at ourselves and cry in agony at our failings. A laugh out loud book and if you like Wodehouse you will love Hearn. He is probably the funniest author alive today and like all standup comedians knows the exact words to make us laugh and cry. ONE WARNING: Do not read this book in a public place unless you don't mind embarrassment. Comedians make us laugh when we need to laugh, and make us cry when we need to cry. They give us so much, but we give them so little in return and often they die alone and lonely. They tell us that they merely want to make us laugh at ourselves and cry at our own follies. So a fitting tribute to them is a farce in which we laugh and cry at a set of people who, in some aspects, very closely resemble ourselves. The title tells us something about the book but should perhaps have included 'The Judge' who comes to a very sticky end as a puddle on a pavement and of course WOW-LASSIE (Women of the World League Against Sex and Sexism In Entertainment) which battles sexism in TV shows.

P G WODEHOUSE IS ALIVE AND LIVING IN THE MIND OF THIS AUTHOR By Robin Leigh Morgan I received a paperback edition of this book through a LibraryThing giveaway from the author and the following is my honest opinion. The back cover of the book proclaims it’s the best since P. G. Wodehouse. Since there’s no mention of this British humorist’s name, I’ve got to assume he had been the biggest influence in Clifford J. Hearn’s wanting to write in this genre. However, I don’t think it had been the actual stories which had been the actual influence, but the televised stories on British television; that along with the British television Ripping Yarns [Michael Palin/Terry Jones from Monty Python’s Flying Circus], the author had watched as a child in London. That said, this author’s short stories share an almost identical look at life itself, poking fun at society and those in it, with what P. G. Wodehouse had written. Each of Hearn’s stories, like Wodehouse, are a snippet, although somewhat disjointed, of the lives of his characters. If you’ve watched the British comedy series Wodehouse Playing or the Ripping Yarns series written by Michael Pallin and Terry Jones [Monty Python] on PBS television [which I have when I’d been considerably younger] or the BBC, then you’ll know what to expect in this book. My laughter ranged from a mere groan to a belly laugh. If you’re not into the British sense of humor, reading the stories in this book might take a little getting used to; but once you do, you’ll find this book quite an enjoyable reading experience. Please be aware the author uses British terminology and spelling of words at times. As a whole I totally enjoyed reading this book, which is the reason I’ve given this book 5 STARS.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. “Timing is the essence of his humour” By LESLIE OBRIEN Clifford Hearn takes us through a hilarious look at a group of people who closely resemble us in “The Bishop, Comedians, Professor, Brothel, Prison And Eels.” Reading like an absurd memoir, Hearn takes us through the lives of each of his characters through snippets into their every day. So much of the book is laugh out loud funny, whereas other parts are what I would refer to as groaners. The type of groan one might make when laughing at a really bad joke because you can’t help yourself. The inner workings of the minds of Hearn’s characters are downright delightful and admittedly, I have known some people of similar mind. Painfully so, which is what made this book that much more entertaining. I dare not say too much as it would easily lead to spoilers and I’m sure that other reviewers will reveal a few. If you are looking for something that is pure entertainment, then by all means, pick up a copy. You won’t be disappointed. This book is for anyone who enjoys humor and excellent storytelling. The only downside I am pointing out is that it could have used a solid final edit. There are so many grammatical issues that I had to re-read some sections to make sense of what was being said. And while, I did find it distracting, the humor kept me turning the page.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining. By mountain girl It’s not my type of humor but I can see how other people might enjoy it. It is funny in a twisted way. I think if you like BBC type comedy, you’ll like this. The title didn’t make sense to me at first, but really what it says is what it is about. The dialogue is conversational; the author addresses the reader directly, letting the reader feel like a part of the storytelling. It’s a different twist and perspective on the world, which is I suppose what all comedians do.I haven’t read many comedy genre books so I’m not sure how they normally feel but I found that if I imagined a comic on stage presenting the story, adding in the proper voice inflections, I could see the humor in the story. Humor is not my thing at all so I guess if I found parts to be funny, it must be fairly well written. I gave it 4 stars because, well, I didn’t really have anything to compare it to and although not my taste, I’m sure others could enjoy it.
