Curtains is a dizzying photographic foray into the hidden realities lurking in the folds of puddled curtains that the photographer, John Briggs, found in windows of a central London office building. The photographer puts the curtain folds though simple transformations that result in strange creatures and eerie landscapes that suggest to him that everyday reality might be unreal.

World-renowned black and white photographer Paul Caponigro has called the 32 pages of the curtain series “innuendos for the eye.” Eric Lewis, composer and violinist of Manhattan String Quartet and Prometheus fame calls them “alluring mysteries of abstract, like sensuous musical shapes formed in the mind and filled with undefinable feelings.”

The photographer himself wonders playfully (but perhaps seriously) if the folds of these curtains “are examples of what’s hidden in plain sight all around us, alternative versions of the marvelous unreality we live in.”

The book includes an introduction in which Briggs, who has a Ph.D. in aesthetics, also discusses the nature of abstract art.

About the Author Hugh Jassburn has been pooing since 1974. After several months of producing a variety of stools, mostly in cloth diapers, he moved on to disposables. By 1978 Hugh was a regular toilet user and hasn't looked back since. His favored position is with his back to the cistern, both feet planted firmly on the ground, and both elbows resting on his knees. He flushes when he's standing, is not a fan of cheap toilet paper, and strongly believes that the flap should always be at the front of the roll.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great gift, nice looking book By GDP One of my work colleagues brought this in to work and it made us all laugh - full of quirky puzzles, quizzes and fun facts. It also looks good! I bought a few copies for family members, can't wait to see them to give them the books!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Turdific book! By Wruce Bayne How many of us are plagued by the unimaginable boredom accompanied by our forgotten phones during a bathroom trip? Being stuck reading the back of Febreze cans or weekly ads...Wouldn't you like to kill two birds with one stone and enjoy yourself, while also relieving yourself? This is a really funny and quirky book that does the job! I've always been a fan of activity/puzzle books, satirical material, and reading unknown facts. This "52 Things to Do While You Poo" book combines all those enjoyable aspects of reading material into one; stimulating your mind while appeasing your boredom! I never regret spending money on a book, since I love to read. This book however, relieves me of my two ongoing struggles pretty well: having nothing to do and wanting a good laugh. So it's definitely worth the buy in my opinion! Its got loads of facts on poo (fitting for the situation), and quirky little activities to keep you busy while you do your business. I also like the design and feel of the book, with a nice white and blue theme and enjoyable drawings throughout. This is something that would really come in handy for a prolonged bathroom trip if you've got nothing else to occupy yourself with. It's so random and humorous though that I think this would also be a great gag gift for your friends or family, and I try to NEVER miss out on an opportunity to give people silly things!

Bought it for my husband and he thought it was great! Perfect as a secret Santa gift, stocking filler or just to put a smile on someone's face. I'm going to buy another for my friend as a house warming gift!

The events of September 11 and the subsequent war on terrorism have provoked widespread discussion about the possibility of democracy in the Islamic world. Such topics as the meaning of jihad, the role of clerics as authoritative interpreters, and the place of human rights and toleration in Islam have become subjects of urgent public debate around the world. With few exceptions, however, this debate has proceeded in isolation from the vibrant traditions of argument within Islamic theology, philosophy, and law.

Islam and the Challenge of Democracy aims to correct this deficiency. The book engages the reader in a rich discourse on the challenges of democracy in contemporary Islam. The collection begins with a lead essay by Khaled Abou El Fadl, who argues that democracy, especially a constitutional democracy that protects basic individual rights, is the form of government best suited to promoting a set of social and political values central to Islam. Because Islam is about submission to God and about each individual's responsibility to serve as His agent on Earth, Abou El Fadl argues, there is no place for the subjugation to human authority demanded by authoritarian regimes. The lead essay is followed by eleven others from internationally respected specialists in democracy and religion. They address, challenge, and engage Abou El Fadl's work. The contributors include John Esposito, Muhammad Fadel, Noah Feldman, Nader Hashemi, Bernard Haykel, Muqtedar Khan, Saba Mahmood, David Novak, William Quandt, Kevin Reinhart, and Jeremy Waldron.

Islam and the Challenge of Democracy: A "Boston Review" Book (Boston Review Book), by Khaled Abou El Fadl

Review "What El Fadl achieves in his short book is noteworthy primarily because he brings the concept of democracy home, literally, for the world's Muslims. By giving democracy a technical and legal basis in Islamic law, El Fadl provides it with a certificate of authentication that secular writers . . . cannot."--Bezalel Stern, The Jerusalem Post "In a just world, Khaled Abou El Fadl would get as much publicity as Osama bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Bin Laden and Zarqawi blow up buildings and slaughter fellow Muslims. Abou El Fadl blows up everything those two terrorists supposedly believe in."--Carlin Romano, Philadelphia Inquirer

From the Inside Flap "Dr. Abou El Fadl's essay is lucid, nuanced, and remarkably thorough given its brevity. The responses that accompany it are intellectually challenging, honest, and lively."--Sohail Hashmi, Mount Holyoke College

"Islam and the Challenge of Democracy not only educates readers about the central issues involved in the quest to develop Islamic democracies, it provides its own substantive contributions to that discourse and debate. The voices of Dr. Abou El Fadl and the other contributors are engaging and supremely relevant."--R. Scott Appleby, University of Notre Dame

"For more than a century, Muslim intellectuals have made various attempts to offer a convincing reinterpretation of the Islamic tradition that is faithful both to Islamic religious belief and to the rationality inherent in the present age - the age of democratic modernity. This well-argued book is the latest contribution to this important project. Students and scholars alike will benefit from the fair and balanced treatment accorded to the debate over the compatibility of democratic values and Quranic teachings."--Abdolkarim Soroush, author of Reason, Freedom, and Democracy in Islam.

Abou el Fadl makes a clear argument and articulates his opinion on how and Islamic democracy would look like. Some of the reviews by other scholars are not that good (quite frankly a few appear not to have read the original article but all in all a great read.

I really like all the intellectual trouble of trying to adjust both religion and society to the 21st Century reality without taking any shortcuts. Best PDF Ebook Online The Principles of Aesthetics (Classic Reprint), by Dewitt Henry Parker

Excerpt from The Principles of AestheticsThis book has grown out of lectures to students at the University of Michigan and embodies my effort to express to them the nature and meaning of art. In writing it, I have sought to maintain scientific accuracy, yet at the same time to preserve freedom of style and something of the inspiration of the subject. While intended primarily for students, the book will appeal generally, I hope, to people who are interested in the intelligent appreciation of art.My obligations are extensive, - most directly to those whom I have cited in foot-notes to the text, but also to others whose influence is too indirect or pervasive to make citation profitable, or too obvious to make it necessary. For the broader philosophy of art, my debt is heaviest, I believe, to the artists and philosophers during the period from Herder to Hegel, who gave to the study its greatest development, and, among contemporaries, to Croce and Lipps. In addition, I have drawn freely upon the more special investigations of recent times, but with the caution desirable in view of the very tentative character of some of the results. To Mrs. Robert M. Wenley I wish to express my thanks for her very careful and helpful reading of the page proof. The appended bibliography is, of course, not intended to be in any sense adequate, but is offered merely as a guide to further reading; a complete bibliography would itself demand almost a volume.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About the Author Prudence MacLeod is a spiritual seeker, dog trainer, Reiki Master, interior designer, and personal trainer who has turned her hand to writing. She is an avid chess player and has recently become addicted to World of Warcraft. In her own words, “I have roamed far and wide for over sixty years in this realm, and I have seen much; some I wish I had not, and a great deal that I would love to see again. Some days I feel like Bilbo Baggins, for I have been there and come back again. No, I haven’t written a book about my wanderings, but much that I have experienced, observed, learned, surmised, or imagined, is woven into the tales I have written. I do hope you enjoy them.”

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Good Sequel By Gordon Clason A good sequel, a good story and exciting developments. The Corelian Guard is suddenly enmeshed in politics and could lose the war in the halls of power. While Tracy and August search for the missing agents, Mr Common engages in bureaucratic infighting for the very continuation of the Corelian Guard itself.Tracy and August's relationship continues to deepen. Those Vorlox who do not agree with the empire get more involved. We learn more about the politics of the Council. However, this is not the conclusion and the book keeps us wanting more.
