Why did election monitoring become an international norm? Why do pseudo-democrats―undemocratic leaders who present themselves as democratic―invite international observers, even when they are likely to be caught manipulating elections? Is election observation an effective tool of democracy promotion, or is it simply a way to legitimize electoral autocracies? In The Pseudo-Democrat's Dilemma, Susan D. Hyde explains international election monitoring with a new theory of international norm formation. Hyde argues that election observation was initiated by states seeking international support. International benefits tied to democracy give some governments an incentive to signal their commitment to democratization without having to give up power. Invitations to nonpartisan foreigners to monitor elections, and avoiding their criticism, became a widely recognized and imitated signal of a government's purported commitment to democratic elections.

Hyde draws on cross-national data on the global spread of election observation between 1960 and 2006, detailed descriptions of the characteristics of countries that do and do not invite observers, and evidence of three ways that election monitoring is costly to pseudo-democrats: micro-level experimental tests from elections in Armenia and Indonesia showing that observers can deter election-day fraud and otherwise improve the quality of elections; illustrative cases demonstrating that international benefits are contingent on democracy in countries like Haiti, Peru, Togo, and Zimbabwe; and qualitative evidence documenting the escalating game of strategic manipulation among pseudo-democrats, international monitors, and pro-democracy forces.

About the Author

Susan D. Hyde is Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at Yale University. She is coeditor of Election Fraud: Detecting and Deterring Election Manipulation.

As I finally feel like a complete person who is actually worth something By Roberts It took me just 30 days to work off my gut, as you can see in my before-and-after pictures. As I finally feel like a complete person who is actually worth something. Before, I knew that my self worth amounted to zero, but now it makes me the person that I am and deserve to be. This is a great idea. Everybody likes to try to firm up their muscles. This books has good exercises, but the thing I really liked was the numerous photos showing how exactly to do each exercise. Without that, it might have been a little tricky.

This teaches you how to work out smarter and more efficiently. But more importantly, it helps us condition ourselves and refocus our goals. One of the most valuable things we have to learn about exercise is that in order to be able to commit to it long-term, we have to make our health, and not weight loss, as our primary objective. If we think about it, if we work out solely to lose weight, we're only doing it for the short term. But if we work out to improve our health, it will guarantee better quality of life in the long run, and in turn, will help us stay on our exercise regimen for the long term. And once you've done that, use the techniques here to re-calibrate your routine. If that doesn't help you out, I don't know what will.

By Emma Smith "People seldom find the time to devote to anything other than their vocations and the incessant race to reach the top. But the simple question remains as to what is the point of racing to the summit if you are going to collapse at the top out of the breathless exertion that you have put your bodies through."I really liked this part. This was an eye-opening and refreshing take on the importance of exercise and healthy living. I know that a lot of you have already read health manuals over the course of years but this book is just a real manifestation on how people are wasting their time, money and efforts into something that they could not potentially benefit from long-term. And only a good health can give you that satisfaction.Great read!

An honest look at life on the road By Phil Simon Most rock autobiographies are about decadence, internal squabbles, and the self-important nature of it all. This one is not. Hogarth writes an incredibly honest, poignant, and often funny look at life on the road. I for one cannot wait for the next addition.

By Steven Sly Really enjoyed this intimate look into what it is like being in one of the most respected progressive rock bands in history. At times the narrative gets a bit tedious, but overall it is an enjoyable read that gives much insight into what it is like living the life of a touring musician. There is not a lot of insight into the creative / songwriting process which would have been nice, but these are mostly road stories. It was interesting for me to read about a few gigs that I actually attended. Hogarth’s writing style is fun and interesting and you really get a sense of what his personality is all about. I am really looking forward to the next installment.

If you are wondering if Steve Hogarth has enough interesting stories to fill two volumes, the answer is yes. Although some of narratives tend to repeat themselves from city to city (sleep, breakfast, walk, sound check, nap, show, drink, sleep), Steve's descriptions of the places he has traveled and the people he has met are worth the read.What made me withhold the 5th star was that the book is almost exclusively written on tour. There are a few rare insights into Marillion's songs and studio time, but they leave you wanting more. You would think that at least some of Marillion songs were inspired by events on the road, but with a few exceptions you won't find that in this book.I can't wait to read part 2!
