He went on to study philosophy before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screenwriter and stand-up comic—an unlikely beginning for a Zen monk, he admits. And he found his “true self” not while writing or performing but rather at a Zen Buddhist monastery. In this enjoyably entertaining read, which includes a foreword by songwriter Leonard Cohen, an ordained Zen Buddhist monk, Haubner doesn’t claim to be an expert in Buddhism or Zen. 32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. "the middle way" between Funny, Shocking, and Deep. By Shanel My husband and I took ZEN CONFIDENTIAL as an accompaniment to our road trip. We took turns reading the stories out loud as the other one was driving. We had many laughs, deep conversations, and a few moments of "can he do that?!". I loved every minute of it. As a person who tries to live a zen life but fails miserably the second the children come home from school, I have to say this book is Modern Zen life in it's rawest form (rawest... yeah you read it first here). It is extremely well written and I look forward to reading more of his work.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Not What I Expected By Heeragen Once I started, I couldn't put this book down. Definitely a page-turner to the very end. Think J.D. Salinger as Zen monk. I learned a lot about Zen and a bit about life in general. I feel like I now know as much about the author as I do about my best friend. Very funny, very human, very honest. Haubner isn't afraid to tell the kinds of family secrets every single one of us has and does so in a voice that knows itself to be broken, is trying his best to fix, while making us aware of the beauty behind normal human foibles. I highly recommend it.

I'm slow reading it because I have to stop so often to post quotes of cutting wisdom from the pages. The author uses disturbingly hilarious prose to bring to light our own insecurities by poking fun at himself. I will be buying more copies as gifts.

Zu The crux of Durkheim’s theorization of religion lies in his metaphysical breakthrough in identifying social reality as the ground of all religions, shattering the presumed dichotomies of the material vs. the imaginary and the body vs. the mind. Releasing studies of religion from the confine of pure ideas and the imaginations, Durkheim (echoing Marxist theory of practice and nodding to Kant's synthesis of Rationalism and Empiricism: "Concepts without percepts are empty; percepts without concepts are blind") brought us onto a new path of understanding religion by investigating how ideas connect to practices, how rites and rituals give rise to symbols, and how symbols structure human behaviors. Admittedly, Durkheim didn’t have the final words on the questions he raised one century ago. And yet, no scholars of religion after Durkheim can evade these questions. This is why Durkheim still matters today.To understand the formation and disintegration of social reality and the idealized social reality, Durkheim drew our attention to rites and rituals through his readings of totemism, concluding that social forces behind rites and rituals (in other words purposefully organized collective actions) engender the sacred and its symbolism in a society. Again, Durkheim, though hopeless wrong about many of the details, correctly identified crucial questions in understanding religion: the performative aspect of ritual (in the sense that rituals generate meaning instead of merely communicating information), the affective power of religious techniques, and the emotional labor inherent in religious practices. Today we continue to ask these questions with contemporary twists such as the role of media in forging religiosity, the cultural capital of religious symbols, and so on.Indeed, Durkheim’s theorization of religion is like Dürer's Rhinoceros: many of the details are dead wrong (seen from the vantage point of the present); and yet, no one can deny the brilliance shone through—thanks to Durkheim’s armchair anthropology (or thought experiments), social reality has become the “natural” category of analysis and one of the most powerful tools in investigating questions related to religions and religiosities.

Extraordinary contribution to the understanding of the religious phenomena By Latina This is a most read book to anyone interested in understanding the social roots of religion. Durkheim's definition of religion is not philosophical, but constructed through the massive ethnological and anthropological evidence of the most elemental forms of religious life found among Australia's indigenous tribes. I had struggle with the definition and the origin of religion for many years, until I read this wonderful book. Regardless of Durkheims' claims about the role of religion in society, which may be functional inside a group but dis-functional with respect to a larger globalized community, his theory for understanding the religious fact from a scientific perspective has more explanatory power than any other I have read.

By John An original (written in 1912) and exceptionally well thought out sociological concept on the origin of religious practices. It fits in well with current research into the origins of religion with respect to mind-body duality, evolution, symbolic thinking, and neurophysiology. I would have given it 5 stars except I think the 1995 translation by Karen Fields enhances the readability. Highly recommended.

By Jacob Gustafson It’s been awhile since I’ve watched any giallo films in earnest. For a while, I couldn’t get enough but after seeing a few misfires in a row I suppose I moved on to other interests. Author Richard Glenn Schmidt did not. His obsession with gialli is like an ever burning flame and that flame can not be put out by the occasional turd. Giallo Meltdown is his love letter to the genre and boy is it a fun one!The concept is simple: Richard loves giallo films and wanted to see them all. In order to do this he carefully planned weekends where he would do nothing but eat, smoke cigars, and watch as many gialli as he possibly could, even going so far as to take vacation days to do it. That is true dedication.He decided early on it would be important to document his marathons and the book is the result of those notes that he took. Crammed inside this book are 200+ reviews of gialli, most of which I’ve never heard of and neither has anyone else for that matter. Some of the films are so obscure that even the people that made them probably don’t even remember them, but Richard does.If you’re thinking this is just another reference guide then you are wrong, dead wrong. It’s a diary of one man’s obsession. Each review features a brief synopsis followed by a stream of consciousness as he watched the film. It’s like sitting right next to Richard while he’s watching the films and commenting on them. The book feels like you’re there while he talks about his smoke breaks and pounding soda. We listen as he tells us how awful he feels after watching 20+ films in less than 3 days. It’s that intimate information that makes the book so much fun as Richard cracks endless jokes about the films he’s watching and about what happens in his life around each marathon. Sure he loves these films but he also understands their shortcomings. It isn’t a holy homage to giallo films filled with reverence (read: boring), its a fun silly ride through the funky world of Italian cinema. I enjoyed the humorous reviews filled with actor/director/composer names and references to other gialli films. The dude knows his stuff for sure.I loved it. The book is a big bucket of fun and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Honestly I enjoyed the sections devoted to whatever he was eating/doing while preparing for the marathons as much as the reviews of the films themselves. I felt like I was there instead of reading a sterile guide. It’s a unique concept in the world of film analysis and it works. He doesn’t cover every single giallo in this book but comes damn close. Besides, that just means that maybe we’ll be treated to a second volume!

Howarth GIALLO MELTDOWN: A MOVIETHON DIARY by Richard Glenn Schmidt offers an affectionate and playful look at the stylish brand of Italian thriller known as the giallo. Just what exactly is or is not a giallo is open to debate and the various different books devoted to the topic are subject to their own criteria – but in essence, they are understood to be style-heavy murder mysteries with heaping doses of either graphic bloodshed or eroticism; or indeed, sometimes, a good deal of both! Schmidt’s book, as the title indicates, takes on the form of a diary – as such, the approach is more anecdotal than critical. The author’s love of the genre is evident on every page, but inevitably I disagree with him on some of the individual reviews – that comes with the turf, however, and is not meant as a slight or criticism: I’m just throwing it out there, that’s all! The entire project was clearly a labor of love and involved Schmidt sitting up for insane periods of time, devouring as many gialli over specially-designated weekends as he could possibly muster. In addition to offering thoughts on the film he watched, he also gives the reader a taste of what all went into these marathons, from the type of food and drink being consumed to the type of cigar being savored in between flicks to observations on some of the friends and family he corralled into sitting through some of these films with him; his wife, LeEtta, has my deepest sympathy – when I undertook my own giallo binge-watching sessions, I figured it best for all concerned that I should go it alone. Schmidt’s prose is engaging and playful – he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he doesn’t engage in much in the way of deep analysis, but he manages to nail the qualities that makes these films so very precious to him and many other giallo-holics out there. The book is divided into sections devoted to each individual movie marathon – thirteen in total. Quite a few gialli are covered, but as Schmidt never set out to try and watch and record his observations about all of them, the lack of numerous titles can hardly be seen as a drawback. What we have here is, in essence, a nice informal tour through some of the genre’s highlights – and lowlights. There are no pictures included, but don’t let that deter you: the book is breezy and entertaining, and I promise you – it will likely inspire you to take a few long weekends and try to binge-watch some of these movies, too.

By LegalWriter All true movie buffs go through manic phases in an attempt to film in gaps in their movie knowledge. (I know that I did. I watched 25 spaghetti westerns during one Christmas vacation week.) In the style of MST3K guys Kevin Murphy and Mike Nelson, particularly Murphy's A Year at the Movies, Schmidt takes on the fascinating, somewhat tawdry but always entertaining, horror sub-genre, the giallo film. I thought that I had a seen a lot of the best and the worst of these films, but Schmidt has seen amazingly obscure things that only exist on blurry bootleg DVD-R burns with Greek subtitltes. His observations on those rarities alone makes this book essential for fans. But in addition, he writes in a witty and self-deprecating way that really is infectious. He loves these films, and he set out on a mammoth visionquest of 13 long sittings to see them all. At the end of his journey, he becomes a titan among cineastes as the crazy guy who has probably seen more giallo films than any other human being alive.If you have even a passing interest in these films or just enjoy good writing not only about films, but about the experience of watching films,check this out. It's pretty terrific.

The author did a nice job telling serious stories with a mix of humor and tales from his life.There were typos which could be fixed easily, but they did not ruin the book for me. Would read another book from this author.I did not feel that the author's inclusion of the occasional tax forms improved the story.

Meyer While this is not the type of book I would normally buy, having just retired from over 20 years as a professional tax preparer I was interested in seeing the outlook of the "other side". While tax professionals (as we call ourselves) consider themselves to be on the tax payers side, we usually picture IRS agents to be on the government's side and looking for every penny. Mr. Krandle, through his examples and wit, proves us wrong. Although he never allows someone to commit fraud, he's still lenient in his final decisions.Mr. Krandle also gives us a look into his personal life and shows us that he's just a normal man trying to do his job as best he can.'

Progress all the way to your highest potential, to the higher stages of ego development, what Abraham Maslow called “transcending self-actualization” and what Carl Jung called “individuation.” Transpersonal self-actualization is opening our visionary potential, clearing away the blocks that have kept us from seeing our own true light. Our shadows provide sanctuary for our fears, but also point the way to our greatest strengths. Create a vision for the future, and develop strategies for achieving that vision. An expanded worldview propels you to higher levels of meaning, life purpose, and identity - your real, true identity. Develop mindfulness, a witness perspective, taoistic receptivity, transcendence through humility, resilience and serenity. This is the BEST book you need to buy. I bought this BEFORE I bought the Hero4 Silver. Even tells you what mini-SD card to buy. All my questions were answered here. This is the ONLY book you need.

By jrwatsio Okay, there are plenty of online guides but having one you can handle in the field while becoming familiar with your new GoPro Hero 4 Black is worth the price. I've tried to memorize the settings tree and can never quite get it right on the first try. This guide covers all the models of GoPro and thankfully my Hero 4 Black. On my next excursion, I hope to have more success getting the video configured in much less time. There are other hardcopy guides available but of what I thumbed through at a B&M bookstore, I found this one fitting my taste. Now I can focus on getting great video or stills from my camera and configure it properly to get the shot I want.

The book was repetitive and felt like it was just 'filling in pages' By LadyA I was eager to learn more about my GoPro Hero 4 and purchased this book, reading it from cover to cover. I found it an extremely frustrating read based on the number of spelling errors which made it look unprofessional and sloppy. The book was repetitive and felt like it was just 'filling in pages'. There were very few images to explain what changing settings would produce eg. slow motion stills or low light images. Honestly, it was a disappointing read and I would not recommend it to others.
