Excerpt from The Fatal Illness of Frederick the NobleIt has been a painful task to me to write the following pages, not because there is anything in the charges recently brought against me by some of my German colleagues, which I have the slightest difficulty in meeting, but because I feel most keenly the unseemliness of a controversy which must necessarily cause additional suffering to hearts which have already been tried beyond the common lot. Although the pamphlet issued from the Imperial Press at Berlin embodies accusations which amount to a charge of malpraxis, I should have been content, so far as I am personally concerned, to leave my professional reputation to the judgment of impartial men. Under the special circumstances of the case, however, I feel it to be a duty which I owe to those exalted persons who honoured me with their fullest confidence through thirteen months of terrible anxiety, to justify the trust which they placed in me. My position, as will easily be understood, was one of the greatest difficulty, owing not only to the overwhelming responsibility of the case itself, but to what I may call its external complications.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Then, I must tell you that I'm talking about the original ediction, not this specific ediction. This book was writen by a then famous doctor Mackenzie. This "English" doctor (in fact a Jew and Polish) was among the five best specialists in oto-rhinolaringoly in the world, during the last decades of XIX century. .When Frederick the noble, then the heir of German throne, became sick, queen Victoria of England, sent the author of this book, to Germany, to treat that prince. The prince was married with one of Queen Victoria's daughters. The doctor that was the author of this good book didn't wrote this good book, for money or to lie to the public, but to inform to the public, what really happened. At the beginning of the preface, the author writes:"It has been a painful task to me to write the following pages, not because there's anything in the charges recently brought against me by some of my German colleagues, which I have the slightest dificult in meeting, but because I feel most keeling the unseemsileness of a controversy which most necesserily cause addictional suffering to hearts which already beeing tried beyond the common lot."This book is divided in three sections. The first is historical. This is the biggest section, with ten chapters;in this long section the author tells what what happened. The second section is controversial, with just two chapters. The third and last section is statistical, whith the results of surgeries in patients, with the same disease of German prince and later emperor, during some months. Beyond doubt, with the medicine available in late XIX Century, no doctor could save the life of Frederick, the noble. In fact, the author was far more important, than himself thought. The son of his patient became the last kaiser of Germany and began the First World War, in 1914.The last Kaiser also sent money and resources to do the Russian Revolution of 1917. Without this cureless cancer, no World Wars or the Russian Revolution would ever happened.

In the UK, the world of property insolvency has evolved through one of the biggest financial catastrophes with the bank meltdown flowing from property-backed lending. Since the first edition of Property Insolvency, there have been significant developments in UK property development, insolvent restructuring of many leading retail chains, and the unprecedented rise of fixed charge receiverships. Along with an examination of various areas of insolvency - tenant's insolvency, freeholder/landlord insolvency, property assets and personal insolvency, property taxation and insolvency, mortgagees and receivers, etc. - this second edition includes coverage of: ** the evolution of principles relating to administration expenses in the cases of Goldacre (Offices) Ltd v Nortel Networks UK Ltd (In Administration) (2009), as well as Leisure (Norwich) II LTD and others v Luminar Lava Ignite Ltd (In Administration) and others (2012) ** the use of forfeiture proceedings during administration, as in the 2012 case of Lazari GP Limited and Lazari Real Estates Limited v Game Retail (UK) Limited 2012 ** the use of Company Voluntary Arrangements, particularly in relation to multi-site retailers, for example, Miss Sixty case ((1) Mourant & Co Trustees Ltd (2) Mourant Property Trustees Ltd v (1) Sixty UK Ltd (In Administration) (2) Peter Hollis (3) Nicholas O'Reilly (as joint administrators of Sixty UK Ltd) (2010)) ** in the Patricia Anne Jones v Leonard Trevor Kernott [2011] UKSC 53 developing the ruling in Stack v Dowden [2007] UKHL17 [Subject: Property Law, Insolvency Law]

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Useful By Phillip Taylor MBE A USEFUL AND USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO THE MODERN LAW RELATING TO PROPERTY INSOLVENCY -- NOW IN A NEW SECOND EDITION WITH ACCOMPANYING CD-ROMAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersSix years ago when the first edition of this book was published, the world had been plunged into depression described as the biggest financial catastrophe since the Second World War. Who could have predicted at the time -- as Peter Arden QC remarks in the foreword -- ‘the length and depth of the downturn that ensued and which has affected every sector of the economy.’As Arden explains, ‘Property Insolvency’ covers the developments that have taken place in matters of property insolvency since the publication of the last edition – and there are plenty of those, including an increase in fixed charge receiverships and a lot more. The co-authors, each eminent in this field, have aimed, in their words, ‘to give a full account of the modern law relating to property insolvency’ in the wake, we would say, of the recent economic crisis -- and it is debatable as to whether a full recovery is on the way.In the meantime, as the authors point out, ‘the current issues involving property insolvency ‘have reached a level of complexity that has never been seen before.’ Fortunately, practitioners seeking to navigate their way through this maelstrom, will get a hefty helping hand from this book, which covers a wide spectrum of property insolvency issues and problems in a single volume, backed up by illustrative case studies throughout.Recently published by Jordan’s, the book is divided into six parts and twenty chapters. Following a useful historical perspective in the introduction, the book deals in detail with tenant’s insolvency in Part I, touching on every conceivable issue and contingency that can and does pertain to leaseholder liability for rent and other obligations under a lease, including the CRAR (Commercial Rent Arrears Recovery).Parts 2 and 3 deal with freeholder/landlord insolvency and mortgagees and receivers. And in Parts 4 and 5, property assets, personal insolvency, as well as insolvency and property taxation are covered in considerable depth. The book offers clear detailed, yet succinct analyses of the legalities and the processes and procedures pertaining to property insolvency, with references to the relevant case law throughout. The authors and their contributors have certainly succeeded in their aim of providing a comprehensive and practical guide to this area of law and its legal mechanisms.Written in a straightforward, accessible style, this is a book which largely de-mystifies much that is mystifying in property insolvency. It is therefore a friend in need to property and insolvency professionals, notably lawyers -- whether experienced or novice -- grappling with property insolvency issues on behalf of clients. And speaking of busy professionals, this book is well organized and easy to use – an important factor when you’re under pressure. The twelve-page table of contents lists in detail every topic and sub-topic covered, making it easier for the reader to look things up.With numbered paragraphs throughout, an index at the back and fifteen appendices containing the relevant forms, (also accessible on the accompanying CD-ROM) the book functions as a practical tool for anyone involved with the thorny problems thrown up by property insolvency matters. All those professionally involved in this area of law should get a copy. The publication date is cited as at March 2015.

Nothing is more fascinating in human relations than the medium of communication we call speech. When this is combined with beautiful music in song, its charm is supreme. The conferences collected in this book were secured during a period of from ten to fifteen years; and in every case the notes have been carefully, often microscopically, reviewed and approved by the artist. They are the record of actual accomplishment and not mere metempirical opinions.

Excellent book for what it has to offer By BDSinC A warning to begin with: the book is written in that dry academic way that was common in those days when these singers were interviewed. So, it isn't going to be "fun reading" in that sense. The book is valuable for insight into what these great singers thought about singing, but the explanations were not so detailed as to teach you "how to sing" under their various methods of singing. One will often find that they actually don't agree with each other at all. The real issue to deal with when reading this book is you really have no clue, based on what is written, about the various vocal methods taught. The most famous is that of Mathilde Marchessi, who was the teacher of a number of the singers in the book. We have all her "scales" and the lot published by various companies now, but fully understanding her method today is really impossible. Though she taught a fully balanced and even scale, she required all her singers be ultimately very high lying Coloratura sopranos. That highwire palatal placement gave a lovely high sound but was unable to produce great volume or dramatic quality (see Melba's totaly failure and stupidity in singing the Siegfried Brunhilde). If one is going to read the book, I recommend LISTENING to recordings of these various singers. The recordings will be horrible because they will be extremely old and from a time long before quality recording. So, remember, you are getting only a ghostly image of their voices. One will often HEAR what they are talking about, even if it is impossible to actually figure out how they did it.Books like this are often written to show really interested and searching singers and voice students a glimpse of the past, when singing was supposedly at its height. It is like, if we could only see how they did it, and follow their "secrets", we will sound as good. Well, this book makes it clear that you will NEVER learn their secrets (even with singers like Caruso who are more forth-coming with what they tell you), simply because they never tell you those things they are doing which were wrong, and in spite of themselves and their technique, not because of it, they produce great sounds. It is a great book to understand the singers of that day, but it must NEVER be considered a text book on singing. You will become more confused, more unable to figure out what to do, by reading the different and conflicting ideas of correct singing than imaginable. And if you listen to their singing, with open ears, you may actually learn that these singers quite often didn't follow their own advice, and often did things that we would call simply unmusical and in opposition to the style of the music they sang.Their greatness is not in question, and that is because they proved by their lives and their careers that they were excellent (and if you see the list of equally great compeditors they sang against, you will understand just what they were up against to become the greatest of the great they were; there were great singers by the thousands in those days, even if they never became world famous or made it to the US -- which helped them become great and known here -- they were extremely good, and not all the best wanted to sing all over the world, many were happy being house singers, for in those days, there was financial security in that; and the public knew what was good singing and what was not; at this time, opera and concert singing was still the "Popular singing of the day" and those standards were expected of anyone becoming a singer or entering the world of professional singing; today such singing is confined to classical music, and the popular music of the day often requires no technique, not even good pitch or tone quality to become famous; but at this time, these singers were seen as the top of the list, a list which included many exquisite singers, and many of these singers were also great teachers -- Lilli Lehmann, who also wrote a book on singing, very informative, but again, leaving too much to the imagination of the reader because she could not provide recordings to demonstrate what she was saying --- and thus they tried to keep their art going). As I said, a truly insightful book about the people who are now distant memories of a long forgotten time. But not a book designed to give you that "secret" to producing a great sound. it is nothing more than asking them to explain how they did what they did, and it is amazing how little they really could explain.

Peterson As a voice teacher, and coming from the Garcia Method of voice myself, I appreciate the detail given regarding concepts of singing, to include breath control, vowel production, methods of instruction and various other topics by historic professionals of singing. There are even some short exercises and diagrams included, showing a sampling of rehearsal and warm up techniques used by some of the singers, and discussion of teaching styles which were, and are, considered trickery at best, and dangerous to voices as the worst. Not all of the singers will be familiar to the modern reader, unless you are well steeped in vocal history and performers prior to 1900. That said, much of what is shared illustrates that vocal technique of the past was based upon very solid principles of vocal production which enabled many stars to sing, for some well past middle age. This is a surprisingly thin paperback, which I had not expected for some reason, but it's size hasn't hampered it from providing insight into mastery of the voice, and many issues and items which are required for a long lived career relatively free from vocal damage.

It is very useful to have this handy edition available today, especially to researchers and others that might be fans of these singers of old.▲The book begins with a lengthy introduction by the editor, James Francis Cooke. I did not find this useful.▲ There are 28 articles. The articles are based on "conversations" with famous singers, such as Enrico Caruso. Each one is prefaced by an introduction by Mr. Cooke, and then the featured speaker presents an essay on a subject of interest.▲ Some of the sections have excellent background biographies. I note for example, the section on Caruso.▲The articles cover a wide array of subjects to the "Teaching Yourself to Sing," (hmm, could be useful) to "What Must I do to Become a Prima Donna" (I don't think so.)√ This book has value, mainly to those researching great singers of the past. I doubt that most students of voice would find this terribly useful or interesting.♫ A Review by Chris Lawson

Former tour manager and plane crash survivor Ron Eckerman reveals the rigors of life on the road as Lynyrd Skynyrd takes the world by storm in 1976, and the ironic turn of events preceding the tragic plane crash in 1977. Ron narrated this audio originally in 2011.

Ron lost a one year battle with acute myeloid leukemia in May of 2014. He asked just a few

weeks prior to his passing to re-release the paperback, add photos, and donate any proceeds to the Leukemia Foundation. A book about Ron's cancer battle, The Last Tour: Love, Laughter, and Tears was released in November of 2014 by his wife and caregiver, about his courageous battle against leukemia. He never gave up hope and he never stopped smiling. It is also available on Amazon as in paperback and Kindle, and will soon be released in audio. The Last Tour: Love, Laughter, and Tears by Carolyn Day, and proceeds will also go to the Leukemia Foundation.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Still waiting on the definitive Biography of America's Rolling stones. By Mike Stone Best so far, much better than Gene Odum's two books. Odum was a childhood friend of Lead singer Van Zant who clearly feels bitter about being left behind while the band traveled and made history. Ronnie Van Zant pitied him and brought him aboard the last year tour, which Odum has milked into two books, autograph sessions, and memorabilia sales. Truth is Odum wasn't close to Van Zant at all, and is closer to the tribute band members out playing Ronnie Van Zant's songs today.Author Eckerman doesn't suffer from the jealousy and bitterness Odum feels. He was their lighting manager, then road manager, and refrained from too much drugs so his memory was pretty clear. Sadly RonEckerman(spoken as one word like the band did), passed away, but this is a good, if short and incomplete last 18 months before the band died in 1977. Like most if not all plane crash victims he remembers nothing of the plane crash so that part is still frustrating and incomplete. Who pulled out Ronnie? Who pulled out Steve? What were the last words of the fallen. Nobody knows.

A person's lifetime is usually shown on their tombstone as the date of their birth followed by the date of their death with a dash in between. Although the dash is small, it contains a person's entire lifetime. I hope you enjoy reading about my dash through this life, as I have tried to capture some of the highlights as best I can remember them. The name for my biography, The Dash of My Life, was inspired by a poem written by Linda Ellis back in 1996.

Boyd shares all; sex, lust, abortion, addition, drugs, incarceration . . . We follow Cynthia; a shy, overprotective, naïve child from Cleveland on a 20 year journey filled with love, lies, drugs, deceit, betrayal and delusions. Cynthia’s undying love for a handsome, compassionate and controlling drug dealer leads her to corruption and mayhem in this ‘good girl gone bad’ adventure of a young woman searching for a real-life fairytale. “Kept Woman” is hard hitting and warns its readers to turn back if in search of a nice and neat love adventure. The book is filled with shady characters and steamy sex. Boyd, via Cynthia, puts herself out there for all to judge. Boyd puts the reader in a position (from the comforts of his or her home) to throw stones from all directions, as she naively and frustratingly runs headlong into pitfall after pitfall. As the tale gains momentum, the reader slowly starts to sheepishly tuck away his or her stones as it becomes evident that Cynthia’s trust in humanity, goodwill and true love has betrayed her. “Kept Woman” reminds us that we were all young, and it was then we loved our hardest. Though the tale is true, I felt the story was not entirely forthcoming. Boyd seemed to spare feelings and details (save for the steamy sex). However, when ones characters are shady and real, it may be in ones best interest to play—or in this case—tell it safe. All and all, “Kept Woman” is a wonderful read. It will keep the gears inside the readers’ head spinning long after the pages stop turning. B+

By LiteratureMan Cynthia is a well-loved person and have been provided with a plethora of opportunities many kids lack. From childhood to becoming an adult, she relied upon other people to treat her well to feel good about life and herself, in which women in her position may morph into a woman with a mild or very controlling, independent personality. Cynthia’s attraction to illicit behaviors is her kryptonite for staying on the straight-arrow of life. Her spirituality is her saving grace. A major glitch in Cynthia’s character is that she thrived on attention and excitement. Eventually, her lovers’ marital status became of no importance to her, as well. She just wanted to avoid feeling the painful side of everyday living. The feeling of not having love and unity around her was hard to deal with; therefore, she gave in to temptation and lived life close to the edge. It’s as if living with humility and grace had become something foreign to her. You did very well with the storyline and I look forward to reading the other two installments of this trilogy. Remember, carefully watch the grammar and punctuation or I can offer my proofreading skills to help you with the rest of the works.

Ayapana "Now, I must have to say that I had never finished a book in 5 hours before in my whole life, but I really must have to express to you that I finished reading this cleverly written book, indeed, within that time frame. I literally could not even drop the book. It was definitely an easy read but this statement, alone, should never be used to downgrade her literary style of broadcasting her story and in her inspiring message. The author allows for you, the reader, to grow and to develop personally with the very main character of the story, whom is the author herself, whilst tying you even deeper to every twist and turn from within this desirable plot of intrigue, journey, suspense, and in personal triumph. After all that she shad been through, she was able to maintain her dignity and to consistently pursue to be true - a KEPT WOMAN." However, when you need to do the devil's work and cite something 100% correctly in a legal footnote, this will get you there. Its actually easy to use once you learn it.

By benjamin douglas pierce Every time I open this book I wonder if it was organized by a monkey with down syndrome. There is so much information that they try to cram into such a small space that it makes the book almost unusable. Furthermore, every time you look up a rule it tells you to look at another rule which kicks you over to another rule. Seriously, make the book bigger and give more examples. Of all the books I've ever cracked the binding on, this one takes the cake for utter, shrieking lunacy.
