Healing Grief: A Story of Survivorship is a memoir of a young woman who first loses her body, and then her mind. With the help of her gifted therapist, family, and friends, she is able to tell her story, and she has since devoted her career to becoming a grief companion for others. Tragedy strikes. It is a loss of such magnitude that it is impossible to imagine how life can go on. Grief crumbles your foundation, forcing you to question your beliefs about whether life makes sense at all. Previously held notions of time and predictability suddenly vanish, like a magician’s cape, turned around to reveal an instant nothing. All you know to be true falls away, and you are entirely lost, drifting aimlessly in an outer space called Grief. You wonder how you will survive. Facing tragedy one moment at a time allows the miracle of hope and healing to begin, but where to begin and how? We begin with blind faith, as well as the comfort that, throughout history, life holds possibility even in the greatest depths of despair. Drawing on each other’s courage and wisdom, we discover the hero in each of us to somehow carry on. Joan Miller holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University with a focus in Counseling and Consulting Psychology. She has co-authored books and journal articles for parents and teachers on helping children with special needs develop communication skills, including The Language of Toys: Teaching Communications Skills to Special-Needs Children (Woodbine House, 1988) and The New Language of Toys: Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Special Needs (Woodbine House, 1996), published in English, Spanish, and Korean. Joan was treated for acute myelogenous leukemia when she was forty-one years old and was given a slim chance of survival. Her only chance of survival meant leaving three young children behind at home and suffering through a year of harrowing inpatient treatments which included multiple traumatic assaults, both physical and psychological. As a result of unaddressed trauma, grief, and loss, Joan developed an increasingly life-threatening clinical depression, which also required inpatient hospitalizations, this time on a psychiatric ward. Her hospitalization experiences for depression were more traumatizing than her brutal inpatient cancer treatment. While facing her own mortality, Joan made the commitment that, if her condition somehow improved and she managed to survive, she would devote herself to improving end-of-life care and psychosocial support services for patients with cancer, as well as for grieving children and families confronting life-threatening illnesses. Over the past ten years, Joan has developed and facilitated grief support programs for bereaved children and families, and she has lectured nationally and internationally on post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth, in schools, mental health centers, hospitals, and hospices. Joan Miller brings four unique voices to her new book, as a survivor of cancer and profound depression, as well as a mental health professional, an author, and the spouse of an oncologist.

By MR This memoir, through its inciteful and exquisite writing, is a must read for anyone who has ever attempted to be a "caregiver" to a person or family going through a life threatening illness. Given that it wasn't written by a celebrity who has instant access to a "virtual" world of both medical and emotional assistance as well as publicity at their fingertips, but rather by someone no different than myself or any other average person awakened a myriad of thought provoking emotions in me. I now realize that while helping the family is vital (through providing meals, childcare, etc.) it is equally important to "be there" for the very person who is going through this traumatic life altering illness-to listen, to hold a hand and try to be a companion even though we have no idea what it feels like to "walk a mile in their shoes". We cannot change the course of their treatment or its outcome but we can become more aware of their emotional needs and stand by them so they know they are not alone. This memoir touched so many emotions for me-from the depth of despair I felt she so brilliantly portrayed as she battled both cancer and depression to the "reawakening" to a richer, more meaningful life I feel that she truly did make lemonade out of lemons and I applaud her.

This lyrical drama was written about twentyfive years ago. It is based on the following story from the Mahab harata. In the course of his wanderings, in fulfilment of a vow of penance, Arjuna came to Manipur. There he saw Chitrangada, the beautiful daughter of Chitravahana, the king of the country. Smitten with her charms, he asked the king for the hand of his daughter in marriage. Chitravahana asked him who he was, and learning that he was Arjuna the Pandafcsl, told him that Prabhanjana, one of his ancestors in the kingly line of Manipur, had long been childless. In order to obtain an heir, he performed severe penances. Pleased with these austerities, the god Shiva gave him this boon, that he and his successors should each have one child. It so happened that the prom ised child had invariably been a son. He, Chitravahana, was the first to have only a daughter Chitrangada to perpetuate the race. He had, there fore, always treated her as ason and had made her his heir. Continuing, the king said : The one son that will be born to her must be the perpetuator of my race. That son will be the price that I shall demand for this marriage. You can take her, if you like, on this con dition. Arjuna promised and took Chitran gada to wife, and lived in her fathers capital for three years When a son was born to them, he embraced her with affection, and taking leave of her and her father, set out again on his travels. The dramatic poem Chitra has been performed in India without scenery the actors being surrounded by the audience. Proposals for its production here having been made to him, he went through this translation and provided stage directions, but wished these omitted if it were printed as a book.

From the Author What is The Joshua James Project?Simply put, I'm offering up nearly ninety percent of my short plays and most of my full length plays (such as this one) to the public free of royalty for theatrical performances, under certain conditions. It's true; you can produce this work, FOR FREE, under the right circumstances. You don't have to pay a royalty or even write to ask my permission, you can simply just produce the play, as long the production meets the following conditions: 1) It's a student or college production of less than 30 performances. 2) It's an independent showcase where no one else gets paid and a run of less than 30 performances. 3) Bottom line, if it's a short run and no one else gets paid, I don't need to get paid. If it's a longer run at a professional theatre and the actors, stage managers and stagehands are getting paid, then I expect to get paid, too. There are requirements, which are as follows: 1) Any program or publicity that features the title of the produced play must also feature my name as the author. More on that later. 2) Don't rewrite it or change the text. You want to improvise, join an improv group. You want to do my play, then you must do it as it's written (there are some exceptions, which are noted in the individual play notes following each.)3) Less than 30 performances by the same company in a single calendar year. And that's it, that's The Joshua James Project. I'm putting nearly all my work out there for you, the independent theatre artist. You want to produce this play for a few nights at your theatre? Go ahead, with my blessing. If goes well, recommend the book to a friend, that's all I ask.

About the Author JOSHUA JAMES is a screenwriter, novelist and playwright based in New York City. His film credits include POUND OF FLESH, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. As a playwright, Joshua made his London debut when The Men's Room was produced at the Croydon Warehouse Theatre. He made his Off-Broadway debut in The Fear Project at The Barrow Group with his piece Extreme Eugene. His plays have been produced throughout New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, all across the United States and various other parts of the world. Joshua loves ice-cold tea, cool summer breezes and hot Brazilian Jiujitsu, though not necessarily in that order.

The two characters, Maynard and Ginny, surprised me a lot, made me laugh and cringe, and watching their dynamic with each other grow throughout the play is something so human, I think we've all experienced something like it in our lives. Worth it, especially for the theatre student. Put this show up.

He's looking for a way out, and Ginny's looking for a way in. For the loveless, fate is full of surprises. Highly recommend for an introspective view of a very deep topic.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Finally ended my losing streak! By Mitchel I'm a fairly decent Chess player but every time I challenge any of my more experienced friends. I lose! I lose pretty bad as most of the times the game doesn't even look close. It's like they predict my moves and plan out some elaborate strategy to checkmate my king even if my queen still alive! Some of the defensive strategies mentioned in this book helped a whole lot! I finally won a game!Those diagrams in the book really helped a lot and there is plenty of other beginner-friendly chess info too!

This is by far the best introductory book on chess that I've ever read. Almost every book I've read expects you to arrive at some understanding of the game by stepping through one game after another but this book gives you a holistic view of the game. The author has shown a lots of tactics & different kinds of strategy.

By Irina What a lovely book - enjoyable to read, but the real strength of the book it that it leads one to think about one's own life. This is a very happy/sad story.. One extreme to the other. I loved this book and would recommend it to everyone.

About the Author David Woodland was born in Croydon in 1936 and attended John Ruskin Grammar School. He joined the Metropolitan Police in 1953. After National Service with the Royal Military Police in Germany he rejoined the Met. His interest in the historical evolution of criminal law developed at Bramshill Police College, Hampshire and this led to publication of his first book Wild's Law. Prior to retirement in 1978 he was a Detective Inspector at Criminal Intelligence Department, New Scotland Yard. Thereafter he investigated fraudulent shipping and insurance claims for Lloyds of London worldwide. He retired to the Channel Islands in 1988. He is married with three sons and four grandchildren.

Corruptiont its Highest By Jock I followed in the author's footsteps on A , B, M and V divisions and after reading this absolutely incredible book I am pleased I did not follow him to C11 where corruption appears to have been instilled by the highest ranking officer in that department Commander David Dilley. How a corrupt senior officer can destroy the career of another up and coming hard working senior officer beggars belief. As an Aid to CID working in the Knightsbridge area of London in the late 60's and 70's I was well acquainted with the professional crime syndicate from Australia who created havoc within the West End banks and jeweller's shops in London and elsewhere throughout the UK. I remember the day they were arrested in Manchester but was not aware it was the author who instigated the whole operation, a fantastic piece of work that destroyed this team forever. Having achieved this in the absence of his bent Commander who was on holiday makes these arrests more commendable. The authors involvement with the arrest of the armed robber Freddie Sewell for the murder of the Blackpool Superintendent is another extremely interesting and corrupt story. Instead getting or being recommended for the highest Commissioners commendation it was his downfall. A sad, sad time for the Met and to this day has never recovered. Commander Dilley never got arrested but his fellow commanders Drury and Virgo plus several others got what they deserved. This book is a MUST read, a really exciting story allbeit a sad end to a good officers career. I would recommend that one reads a book by DC Jim Smith title (Undaunted) as a follow up to this book.
