Once the real thief was behind bars, Dodge wrote at breakneck speed. Alfred Hitchcock snapped up the film rights before publication, visualizing his two favorite stars in the lead roles. Hitchcock worked with his screenwriter, John Michael Hayes, to produce the film script that would take Hollywood's finest to the South of France.

Interesting Story of An Interesting Man - Loses Focus When Hitchcock Shows Up By Dirk Drudgler David Dodge seemed like the kind of man who lived his life well. He had a wandering spirit which kept him untethered from society and possessions so he could turn his passion for world travel into a lifestyle. He married a woman who was much like himself and together they determined that they were going to live in the paradise of the French Riviera among millionaires. Somehow they were going to survive on his income as a writer.They found a little rental place with a magnificent view and settled there following the budget minded upwardly mobile maxim of finding the worst house on the best street. It was here he wrote To Catch A Thief. It is the story of a cat burglar out to prove his innocence in the Cote d'Azure. Alfred Hitchcock bought the rights to the film and made the same French Riviera location the obvious choice for working with Cary Grant & Grace Kelly.The very short book primarily focuses on David Dodge until the movie people show up. These moments are the most interesting as Mr. Dodge is an interesting person who we don't know much about. When production begins on the movie, Dodge falls into the background and the narrative starts to drag. All of the details of the making of this movie and the lives of its legendary cast have been explored in much more depth than what is offered here in a fairly pedestrian account of the film's production. Interactions between the book's most interesting character (Dodge) and Hollywood's royalty are non-existent which causes the narrative to suffer greatly.Kudos to the designer of the cover, a very cool and compelling image not often seen on Kindle Singles.The book definitely has its charms but could probably do with a good and thorough editing to tighten up the story and to refocus it on its main strength, travel writer and novelist David Dodge.

It starts with background on the author of the book on which the movie was based, and this was the part of the book that I found the most interesting. Mr. Dodge led an interesting life! The book also covers the process of converting the story to a movie. Fans of "To Catch a Thief" will probably enjoy this behind the scenes look at the movie and its back story. Others might find the story of Mr. Dodge compelling, as well- he lived the sort of life that many of us say we want.
