Nine short plays set in front of and behind a window. Black reflective windows set to each side reveal different views of the characters and at times, the audience. These are design pieces. The plays began while the playwright, Richard S. Bailey, was working with Samuel Beckett. While typing production notes he noticed a moth trapped inside the frames of a storm window. It was trying to reach the top of the bottom frame to see out. Its quest to see the outside and freedom is detailed in "Attendant", the first of the pieces, written in Berlin, 1977. Later, back in the US, he began to take notice of angry couples arguing as he passed by densely packed apartment buildings. He recalled his childhood and mothers shouting at their children from the brownstone tenements of Brooklyn. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, men screamed hateful diatribes from windows high in transient hotels. The media was full of snipers, unseen from multi-story buildings, attacking those they never knew. "Window Pieces" is an amalgamation of all these impressions.

About the Author Richard S. Bailey is author of a deconstruction of the Antigone myth, Tiresias Lies: The Insidious Plot of the Men with No Left Shoe; a sci-fi excursion into the story of Abraham and Isaac, Deus Ex Machina and The Hands of the Beholder, which was produced to excellent press in Los Angeles and Berkeley. His translation of Growing Absurd: Six Short Plays by Jean Tardieu is the first of the seminal absurdist’s works to be translated into the American genre. He is the editor of two A Child’s Book of Old Fashioned Fairy Tales, reissues of the Victorian fairy tales of Madame de Chatelain and two books of Japanese Fairy Tales. He is a former Associate Director of the Los Angeles Theatre Center, Los Angeles Actors’ Theatre, and Producing Director of the San Quentin Drama Workshop. He was personally invited to work with Nobel laureate Samuel Beckett at the West Berlin Academy of Art (1977). His 2006 production of Shuffle, Shuffle, Step: Three Short Plays by Samuel Beckett received rave reviews from the L.A Times, Backstage West, and Daily Variety, was the recipient of two LA Weekly Awards, and fulfilled Beckett’s request that he perform Krapp’s Last Tape.

Outstanding Reading Pleasure Not To Be Missed By Los Angeles Critics Club We at the Los Angeles Critics Club over the years have read plays by this author. We have also attended small theater productions by Mr. Bailey in Los Angeles, specifically quite a few in the Hollywood area including the NoHo theater district. We see him as a very talented playwright who is becoming more and more popular in the theater community play by play. He also entertains the child audience with his Bailey Family Story Book.Very worth while for the little ones to say the least. We highly recommend his works for your reading pleasure.

Reality changes depending on your point of view from in front of or behind the window. I'd love to see these on stage; the use of black reflective panels is clever and enlightened. The sense of humor never flags. Great pieces for actors, directors, and designers.
