About the Author Don Romonov is the author of Broke Ass Brigade, a book penned from first-hand experience about his life with Asperger’s syndrome. An account of the tough times he has faced trying to fit in, and make a life for himself. He was often looked at as a problem child, and then a misfit adult—often sad, a loner, unable to make friends. His parents sent him to a number of different psychologists, but none of them had the answers. His disability was dismissed as rudeness, laziness, or deliberate misbehavior. Despite being highly intelligent, he was unable to secure and keep the most basic jobs due to his social disabilities. Immersing himself into gaming, whiskey, and old Mercedes, he found a way through this harsh world. Finally, after hitting rock bottom, Don found his way to recovery by giving up prescription cocktails and failed therapeutic measures. He has found medical marijuana to be his way to living a “normal” life. Having found the state assistance he needed to focus on getting better, he now is successfully completing his Master’s Degree (with a 4.0 GPA).

The Broke Ass Brigade, A Review By louise3anne These are the chronicles of a young man, who coincidentally has Aspergers, who is working for the Company Store... It who cannot be named. My words, I think.It's not easy getting a job in North America these days, and Don Romonov tells us his experiences working for one giant, soul sucking corporation.This author is an astute observer of human beings and was in a location full of amazing and unusual specimens of humanity that he sketches for us, quickly and competently.He outlines the problems with corporate management thoughtfully and intelligently. It's a miracle this place continues to function. Literally a miracle as it wrings blood out of stones.He has a wicked sense of humour that had me laughing out loud every now and then, and at one point, very near the end of the book, I laughed for five minutes. This alone was worth the price of admission.I read some of the other reviews. Some warned about f-bombs. There are f-bombs, but they're always appropriate and tasteful.Some reviews criticized this author's spelling, word use, or formatting, and I can say, as a person who automatically edits any book she reads, this book was well written, with few typos or spelling mistakes. There were very minor formatting problems but the storytelling was so powerful that the formatting problems were not noticible.Mr. Romonov has an incredible wit and sense of humour. He could write dialogue for movies or tv that would be remembered forever.He opened my eyes to the incompetence and unnecessary cruelty that goes on in the corporate store. I will be shopping there less. Much, much less.I've had difficult times in my life, but nothing to compare with what he describes. He is to be congratulated for making lemonade out of this puppy.In short, I loved the book. If you love people watching, astute observation and analysis, and laughing, you will enjoy this book.I think it's a great read, and give it a Tremendous, and 5 stars.

By Esmeowl12 The Broke Ass Brigade by Don Romonov is an autobiographical journal or diary of sorts of a young man who is forced to scrimp and save just to make it in the day-t0-day world. He has to scrimp and save because he works at "The Company Store." The specific name of the store is never mentioned but it's easy enough to figure out.Don relays his daily struggles with Asberger's Syndrome (a form of autism), making ends meet, his friends and their activities and the horrors of working at "The Company Store." This book is both terribly sad and hilarious. The stream-of-consciousness (and loaded with sarcasm) entries about the people he sees in the store and the real-life things that they do are as mystifying as they are unbelievable. I laughed out loud a number of times at things he mentioned. When I tried to read them aloud to my family, I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face!Now, a word of warning, the language in the book is crass, graphic and may be offensive to some. The f- word sprinkles most of the pages. If you can get past that, this is a very entertaining read. I give it a B+.

56 of 66 people found the following review helpful. An Early Bloodbath Avoidance System By J. Miller A self-styled chess romantic would probably cringe at the notion of taking up the Reti Opening. Among amateurs, it has a reputation for pusilaminity. Many beginners do not shirk from engaging in hand-to-hand combat right out of the opening. Yet, with time, I have come to see the dark side of trying to play a theory intensive opening repetoire which allows an opponent significant counterplay. David Bronstein once said that to gain winning chances, one has to grant some concessions to one's opponent. There is another school of thought to this idea of seeking dynamic imbalance as the catalyst for victory. Many masters are happy to play in an environment where they are not facing an attack out of the opening, where the deployment of their pieces are in an easy to follow plan, and yet there is still "something" there for the white player to work with. Players like Botvinnik, Larsen, Petrosian, Miles to name only a few, have been quite happy to play openings like the Reti. The opening has made appearances at the highest level of competition. I can think of Reti-Capablanca 1924, Alekhine-Euwe 1937, Petrosian-Tal 1962, Korchnoi-Karpov 1974, and Kasparov-Karpov 1987. The Reti allows broad scope for original maneuvering in the middlegame, and the possibility to outplay an opponent strategically. At the non-professional level, I would argue that it is in the best interest of a chessplayer to cut down as much as possible in the amount of theory one has to study. Why? because the amateur needs to spend time studying other things, like endgames and middlegame books (how to do this effectively is something else entirely though..) To go further, I would say that one should try and play openings which will be forgiving of less-than-exact play. The Reti fits this perfectly (I would also recommend similar openings like the Barcza or the Catalan). The key motif of the Reti is the early securing of the white king in a kingside fianchetto. I tend to think it is a good idea for beginners to play this way, as they tend to survive longer. Now, to get to specifics, the nature of white's "pull" in the Reti is subtle, so a slight error by white can allow black to equalize fairly quickly. Yet even if black can swing the position around to his favor, the white king position is still a tough nut to crack. Now to get to the meat of this book. The only other book to cover the Reti in recent times is "the easy guide to the Reti" by Dunnington. I would recommend this book as well, although there are differences in style and in the lines emphasized. The "Dynamic Reti" is better as a complete repertoire book. Having spent so much time talking about theory avoidance, I will now say that there is a body of theory to the Reti and related systems, and if one has any pretensions to getting anything out of the opening, one had best study it. One nice thing about the Reti is that if one studys it for just a short time, and then plays it against someone unfamiliar with it, I am still amazed at how effective it is, opponents seem to be left with lousy pawn structures (like isolated pawns, or hanging pawns) all the time. the title "Dynamic Reti" is well chosen, as Davies has indeed tried to select more aggressive set ups for white. Some of his suggestions (in the "Reti Slav")are similar to Tony Kosten's lines in "the Dynamic English" (I should mention here that I started out trying to play 1 c4, but I found the move 1..e5 quite a challenge, with 1..e5 white can find himself under a surprisingly fierce kingside attack. 1 Nf3 cuts out this possibility, to some degree). As one works through the Davis book, it becomes clear that in the main lines of the Reti, for black to challenge for the initiative requires boldness and preparation. I am thinking of the reversed Benoni lines or the thrust used by Geller in the Closed Reti (game 5 in the book). The Symmetrical English (which is probably required study for a Reti player, unless one wants to play 2 b3 or 2 e4!? in response to 1..c5) is a challenge for the white player, and I like the lines Davies comes up with here. Of course, there are several ways of playing the Symmetrical, and if one finds his lines not to one's taste, then one can try different lines. Davies suggests the 6 Nc2 line against the Maroczy Bind, which, he admits, is controversial. However, the main lines of the Bind are a tough bite to chew, so I am with Davies here. The other lines include the Rubinstein variation, which also has a reputation for solidity. I have not yet "field tested" his ideas here, but, as far as I am concerned, any suggestions for chipping away at this defense are most welcome. So, for those who play 1 c4, I would recommend this book as well. The Reti b4 line against the Kings Indian is a refreshing break from the mind-numbing vast pool of theory in the KID, I think the b4 thrust gives white something to work with. Against the Dutch, he also recommends b4 lines. As a Dutch player(a very double-edged defense, to be sure) I think 1..f5 is a good way to stir things up against the Reti. I quite like his b4 lines against these dutch set-ups, just remember that when the game takes this course, the play is going to be rather sharper than in most Reti lines. In conclusion, I am going to play the Reti myself, and I have confidence with the white pieces that I have not had in a long time.

Hutchinson A 1.Nf3 player could be thought of as a d4 player who is chicken of the Nimzo!But when you study 1.Nf3 you learn to appreciate it more for what it is. To really master this opening, you have to learn to pick and choose from several openings.Where I like his book is on the Closed Reti, Reverse Benoni Reti, and the Reti Accepted. I think he has some great ideas in there. But when it comes to this books section on the Slav Reti. Well the lines he gives white has to sacrifice a pawn. I don't buy it white gets compensation in these lines he suggests.Against the Slav Reti I think the best way to go against it is go into the Slav! That is where I said you got to pick and choose. When to go into an English or d4 opening or stick with the Reti.Over all I liked the book very much.

By Jeff I have played the Reti now for some 35 years or so, and thought I knew pretty much all there was to know about it. However, the ideas presented forth in this book are some of the most forward thinking, unusual and viably practical thoughts that I have ever seen written down about the game. Imagine, in a Reti Accepted match after 2...dxc4, to be told to try 3.e4! instead of 3.Na3 or 3.Qa4+. And that it actually works! Davies comes up with many solid moves in different variations which are wholly workable and yet so entirely strange to see played in this particular game, but strange in a very refreshing way. I wholly recommend this book to anyone who loves the Reti but may be slightly tired of having a difficult time winning with it.

About the Author I got into Law of Attraction in 2006 (I thought) quite by accident, though now I know better. That's the problem. You never know it's hitting you until it does. Growing up, I never imagined that I would have the life I have now. I was raised in a beaten down neighborhood in the mid-west with more problems then I knew how to handle. My mother left my father after his abuse and womanizing became too much. The broken marriage itself had the effect of leaving me worried that I would never have a solid relationship of my own and lost because I rejected my father's idea of manhood. In between the drinking that I had turned to in order to dull my emotions, I would spend hours reading. It was there in the library that I ran into my first life-changing book, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It was to become a turning point in my life, which is why I want to share my experience with others. I started tackling my own limiting thoughts, listening to and creating powerful affirmations for myself about wealth, abundance, relationships and success. I radically changed my daily habits and learned the mind disciplines that I needed in order to thrive. After taking countless classes, seminars, reading books and traveling to conferences, I've studied as much as I could on the powerful Law of Attraction with the hopes of sharing it with others. While I'm not (yet) a millionaire, I now live a life that I never dreamed I could have. I have the business and productivity I've always wanted, have transformed my body and found the partner of my dreams. I now know that I can have anything I want by manifesting the thought and feeling of it so clearly, that I can sit in the peace of that fulfillment and make it so in the tangible universe. It's it own form of "work" and it takes practice, but I am dedicated to sharing all I know with you so that you may also have the life you truly want. In fact, it doesn't 'predict' winning numbers but gets behind the laws of the universe and how our thoughts affect them. I liked it because it shed light on how my thoughts create my future, something which one may read in other books, but the fact that it focuses on the lottery winning mentality helps the reader to understand the role motives, feelings and goals play in winning.

By Toni Rickard More than just covering how to attract winning the lottery and money this book goes in depth about how to change your thinking to be more positive, thus making you feel good. If anything you will walk away with a more positive outlook and being happier. Much of the book is primarily about the law of attraction, winning the lottery and money are pluses on the book.

And I have read many books on the subject. This book is one of the best books on the Law of Attraction that I have ever read.The author goes through the basics, and then really gets into the specifics on how to get what you want. He includes detailed clearing processes and methods that clear out limiting beliefs. I have been studying the Law of Attraction for 5 years. And I have read many books on the subject. This book is one of the best books on the Law of Attraction that I have ever read.The author goes through the basics, and then really gets into the specifics on how to get what you want. About the Author

Robin Ellis has enjoyed a long and successful career in British television and theatre, including a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He lives now in southwest France with his American wife.

Inspired by a lifelong passion for cooking plus a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, Robin wrote his first cookbook, Delicious Dishes for Diabetics: A Mediterranean Way of Eating, in 2011. His second cookbook, Healthy Eating for Life (2014), is aimed at everyone wanting to eat more healthily without sacrificing good taste. His third cookbook is scheduled for publication in 2016.

Robin blogs regularly on food, cooking and life in rural France at http://robin-ellis.net. He also leads popular healthy cooking workshops in Lautrec, France.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Nicely written for first time author By Loretto Leary Initially "The Making of Poldark" was to be completed by a ghostwriter. Robin Ellis undertakes the task of writing the book himself. Written in a flowing conversational style with insights into Cornwall and the actor's life. This is a great read for any fan of the original Poldark series. Ellis manages to make himself disappear into the background whilst describing in acute details how the original series was filmed. Beautiful pictures add to the book's appeal.

A must read for all Poldark fans By Bev Having enjoyed the original "Making Poldark" by Robin Ellis, about the first Poldark series, I eagerly anticipated this new, expanded edition. I was not disappointed - its delightful. This new edition, expanded now with several pages devoted to material about the 2015 BBC Poldark series, brings to light exciting details from the latest production. Mr. Ellis, who starred in the original series, tells of his first-hand experience playing the Reverend Halse in the new production, with stories of his interaction with the new producers, director, actors, and crew. Fans of both the first Poldark and the new Poldark series are sure to enjoy this book.

For those who don't know, "Poldark" was the "Downton Abbey" of its day, with millions glued to their tv screens for each thrilling episode. I have a previous version of this chatty, fascinating book, and am delighted to see it updated to include Robin's comments about acting in the 2015 BBC remake of "Poldark." Robin is also now a cooking teacher and cookbook author. Always paying homage to his fellow actors and to the "Poldark" novelist Winston Graham, Robin's book offers humor, nostalgic anecdotes from filming the beloved original series, and the sweetness and scariness of playing a role in the new series. Like the "Poldark" books, this is a page-turner.

43 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Good By Oddsfish I was surprised that Lorna Doone by Richard Blackmore was a good as it turned out to be. It had a very compelling story and good characters even if the novel seemed a bit wordy at times. Lorna Doone is also the single best example of a romantic novel. It may not be among the very best of this category (like The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, or any of Jane Austen's novels), but it does fit every criteria. It had a major emphasis on feeling as the whole of the book is a love story between John Ridd and Lorna Doone. The book also has a lot of high adventure in it and an emphasis of nature (Blackmore was just about the only English forerunner of Thomas Hardy in novels in this respect). The novel was even about the common man.The plot of the novel follows John Ridd. He is a respectable farmer who one day happens into the valley of the Doone's, a family/community of outlaws who had killed his father. There, he ends up falling in love with one of the Doone's own, Lorna. Then, John has to find a way to save his love and overcome their differences of birth.Lorna Doone is a very interesting read. It may not be for everyone because it is long and does tend to dwell on some trivial things for a bit too long. The novel would be good for anyone who likes classics of romanticism. Lorna Doone can be a very worthwhile read.

By A Customer Yes, this is a romance, complete with endangered heroine, noble highway man, political intrigue, and unlikely last minute reprievals from doom. BUT the hero and narrator, John Ridd, is a farmer; big, strong, no brighter than he ought to be, benevolent, and practical. The fabulous valley of the Doones is firmly ensconced in the everyday Exmoor of 18th century England: the stock must be fed, the hay must be made, the farm-hands managed. In this world it's wonderfully right that the only farmer in Exmoor strong and determined enough to rescue his entire flock from the worst blizzard in years should also rescues lovely Lorna from the vicious Doone clan. Better yet, he also views both extraordinary feats as his simple duty, and describes their despatch more in terms of expedient (the mechanics of snow-shoes, the failure of the signals arranged between the parted lovers) than in flowery language of the heart. Lorna Doone is a paragon of 19th century Romances; Blackmore's writing displays, at their best, the literary qualities sought by his contemporaries: read this book for novel adventure, copiously detailed incident, moral improvement and wonder. You'll wish for an entire winter by the fire-place in order to savor it fully.

33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. More than just the story. By Sailoil Lorna Doone is a classic tale of romance and bravery, vengance and villany. What is important about the book besides the story is the societal subtext. When you read this book you get a picture of what made the British Empire great. We see Master Jan, or John Ridd, a simple squire, who catches his own fish, harvests his own wheat at the head of his labourers. This humble man is not afraid to take matters all the way up to his king and expect justice in return. We see a comedy of errors as militia groups vie with each other and end up fighting each other instead of the enemy. The whole tale is told amid the last battles ever fought on English soil during the little known Monmouth rebellion. A remarkable and noteworthy book, which tells more than the main story. It is both a great read and a portrait of English rural society of the time.

This is a great book that should be necessary reading for anyone in the non-profit field, whatever your cause may be. Whether you're a volunteer, an executive director, or looking to start a group of your own, check this one out.As advocates for social change we should understand why people believe the things they do, and why they do the things they do. Most of us that are trying to change people's behaviors and beliefs can get easily frustrated when we put in so much work and don't get the results we had hoped for -- this book will help you understand people better, and therefore be better at influencing people to adopt more kind and compassionate behaviors.By using years of marketing and psychological studies, Cooney compiles it all together and applies it to activism. It's definitely a one of a kind book that is well-written and easy to understand (even if you don't know anything about psychology). While reading it I was constantly thinking, "How could I apply these ideas and discoveries to my advocacy work?" And that's what the book makes you do -- it helps you to think differently, critically and more effectively on creating social change.

By Ben_Davidow Whatever your cause and whatever your profession, if you're someone who wishes to use psychology and influence as a force of good, you will deeply benefit from "Change of Heart." Cooney draws on classic and novel research in psychology to provide a window into why people believe the things they believe, do the the things they do, and how people can be led to do better. Cooney doesn't just spew off psychological research though, he relates his own experiences as an activist who acted on many misguided (albeit common) assumptions about human nature and learned to be more effective. From front to back the book is teeming with insights into how people think, act, and make choices. I recently read Nudge, a great book on psychology and behavioral economics from a public policy angle and I kept thinking 'there should really be a book like this but geared toward social change.' Thankfully, Nick Cooney wrote it! It's rare to find a book that is both fascinating on an intellectual level and actionable on a day-to-day practical level. This book is loads of both.After reading "Change of Heart", you will be armed with powerful psychological insights in your efforts to help others and promote a better world.

Applied psychology for activists By Alex B This book is the most practical application of psychology (largely social psychology) that I've seen, and it should be required reading for every amateur and professional activist. The author, in a very readable style, describes how people are and are not swayed to changed their behaviors, and how you can do the swaying. The book weaves some wry humor into what is very much a handbook-style work, and includes fascinating personal anecdotes from the author's experience in (mostly animal rights) activism.Having been involved in activism myself for years, what struck me most while reading Change of Heart was how far from ideal and effective most real-world activism is. Most activists' efficiency -- that is, getting the most change for their resources and effort -- would be greatly increased by reading and applying the principles outlined here. So you, pamphleteer, and you, executive director, and you, grant-writer: this book is for you!

By Peg Cohee Having walked this all consuming road, I can tell by the scattered thought process that the author has as well. The things and places addiction brings you to, comes alive in these pages. I'm hoping as her next book hits the shelves, we are a little more exposed to the beginning...of who she was before it began. To start at the beginning is to see the person within the turmoil, prior to the addictions. I'm hoping to be led up to the "The Point".
