By Ian Prior Let me say at the top that I loved “A Doctor and a Plumber in a Rowboat” and wholeheartedly recommend it not only for anyone new to improvisation but also for the experienced improviser who already speaks “yes, and” as a second language.As a longtime improviser myself, I took classes in the early '80s with members of the renowned improv troupe Chicago City Limits, and later taught improv and ran an improv show in NYC. I also read every seminal guide on the topic including Viola Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater" and Keith Johnstone’s “Impro.”To my mind, “A Doctor and a Plumber” equals and may even surpass them all.Schindler and Soter, who between them can boast over six decades of improv experience, are informative, covering all the bases from the importance of justification to ways to juice up your spontaneity. But they’re also constantly entertaining and at times refreshingly snarky. They even manage to crystalize in a coherent way some of the more esoteric, even Zen-like notions long-time improv addicts inevitably encounter.In short, “A Doctor and a Plumber” made me want to improvise every day. It also made me want to be a better improviser (to paraphrase a famous movie line). And I don’t think you can ask for anything more from an improv guide.(Full disclosure: Over the years I’ve studied or performed with both authors and am mentioned in the book.)

By Dain Dunston I always thought the reason to have improve training at a corporate event was to help managers lighten up and use humor at work. But when I read this, I realized that improv is the perfect model for building a culture of innovation and action. If want to learn how to get your team working together and pushing projects forward, put the lessons of this book in action.

STEINBERG Ahem!...To anyone who possesses even a modicum of desire to experience the possibility of being able to personally engender the possibility of generating and pleasurably experiencing the potential of being able to figuratively rise to (and to spread to one's fellow Humanoids) the jocularity-suffused penultimate heights of existential societal-commentarious ribaldry -- OR, IN SHORT, to learn the techniques and the joys of improv (and in SHORT, CLEAR, WISE, EASY-TO-GRASP SENTENCES, completely unlike this one!), from two MASTERS of improv -- I urge you to read Tom Soter's & Carol Schindler's book "A Doctor & A Plumber In A Rowboat - The Essential Guide To Improvisation"!I'm in the midst of reading it, and I find the insights and guidances that Tom and Carol -- whom I proudly also reveal are my long-time improv instructors -- have put into this book to be clear, well-organized, immensely practical, and brilliantly perceptive. And, at the same time, it's a fun read.AND it has pictures!What more could you ask for?Plus, at the bottom of the book's last page, it says "Made in the USA". Shouldn't someone tell Donald Trump about this? Maybe he could use it in his campaign, by holding up the book, in front of his cheering throngs, and loudly declaring "Now, THAT'S what I'm TALKING ABOUT!".Just a suggestion.
