3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Rare Look Behind the Scenes of John Ford's THEY WERE EXPENDABLE (1945) By Robert M. Fells An important addition to the considerable volume of literature on John Ford’s films, Behind the Scenes of They Were Expendable for the first time publishes photographs taken on location over seventy years ago of this true World War II story. The 30-day shoot began on February 1, 1945, offshore in Miami, Florida and at a nearby uncharted island. Hollywood stars John Wayne, Robert Montgomery, Jack Holt and Ward Bond were recruited by director Ford to re-enact events in evacuating the Philippines in the face of the Japanese onslaught. Author Lou Sabini deserves high marks for bringing these overlooked but historically important images into public view. Sabini worked with retired Navy photographer Nicolas Scutti who, as an 18 year-old sailor, had the good luck to be assigned to cover this event. The wonderfully candid images captured by Scutti, nearly 150 photos in all, vividly recall the sweat and hard work of all those involved from the film celebrities to the extras and crew. Scutti carefully annotated each photo and Sabini provides an excellent narrative text to provide the reader with a “you are there” perspective. Appendices include the text of a very interesting court decision whereby the plaintiff alleged defamation in the manner that his character was portrayed in the film. He may be the only person who ever sued over John Wayne playing him onscreen! This handsome volume is “must” reading for anyone interested in American film history or in the Second World War, and who thought they’ve seen it all. My highest recommendation.

An Inspired Tribute to a Great Motion Picture By Bill Levy Many admirers of John Ford consider his greatest films were made in the late 1930s and early 1940s; these include "Stagecoach," "Young Mr. Lincoln," "The Grapes of Wrath," and "How Green Was My Valley." Other Ford devotees favor his post-World War II motion pictures such as "They Were Expendable" and "My Darling Clementine." Others admire such later works as "The Searchers" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." I stand with director-Fordian scholar Lindsay Anderson and am most touched by John Ford’s "They Were Expendable." Anderson believed that John Ford was the “poet of faith in an age of unbelief” and declared this movie about the American defeats in the Philippines at the beginning of World War II at the time of Pearl Harbor is Ford’s masterpiece, his heroic poem. Film scholar Lou Sabini and photographer Nicholas Scutti’s “Behind the Scenes of They Were Expendable: A Pictorial History” (McFarland, 2015) utilizes Scutti’s stunning photographs and astonishing recollections of the month he spent in 1945 on location in Florida while the movie was being filmed. The result is a must-read for anyone interested in John Ford, John Wayne, World War II films, and one of the great movies about men and women in war. This book is an extremely well-organized and sincere and inspired tribute to the movie. It includes a fascinating, detailed overview of the background to the production of the film and also features bios of the actual heroes (John Bulkeley and Robert Kelly) who led the PT squadron which rescued General MacArthur and brought him to safety. There are also bios of the Hollywood stars of the film, Robert Montgomery (who actually commanded a PT boat during the war), John Wayne, Jack Holt, Donna Reed, and Ward Bond. But the core of the book are the photographs and Sabini’s adroit, probing questions of Scutti who was an eighteen-year-old U.S. Navy photographer in 1945. These questions and Scutti’s memories of his experiences interacting with the cast and crew gives the reader an excellent behind-the-scenes view of the filming of this classic motion picture. The movie, "They Were Expendable," features numerous “Fordian moments,” touching scenes that capture and expose a significant moment in time, a perfectly phrased quip, or a revelation of a character’s private and often painful thoughts, sentiments, and memories. Hopefully, this book will propel new audiences to experience this exceptional movie and its special moments. If so, Sabini and Scutti have more than done their duty. JOHN FORD'S PICTORIAL & HISTORICAL WWII FILM IN PHOTOS, INTERVIEWS, & HEROES!! 6 STARS By Donatfan I saw John Ford's THEY WERE EXPENDABLE for the first time a few months ago. I deeply admire the director's work and I've seen many of his films, some many, many times. I must admit that I've studied the World War II European Theater since childhood through film and reading. I've continued to focus there, knowing that I needed to address the Pacific Theater. I am deeply grateful that the film THEY WERE EXPENDABLE was recommended to me. I watched the film in awe as the PT Boats in the Pacific Theater commanded by Lieutenant John Brickley (Robert Montgomery) and Lieutenant (JG) "Rusty" Ryan (John Wayne) went on missions I had no idea had occurred in real life! Professor Lou Sabini, in BEHIND THE SCENES OF THEY WERE EXPENDABLE: A PICTORIAL HISTORY, has crafted a unique book. Frankly, for a book chronicling behind the scenes of the making of a war film, the author writes in a fascinating, honest, and interesting style (there are 30 days worth of photos of John Wayne, John Ford, the crew, etc.) yet his tone is at all times honorable to the reel-life and real-life heroes. There are interesting biographies on the real-life PT Boat Leaders. I found fascinating biographies on the "reel" life heroes including John Ford and the actors in the film. I learned about their war records, and misconceptions were cleared up for me. I found this biographical section enlightening and would highly recommend it. The book includes background filming information, and is extremely interesting both from a cinematic and a historic point-of-view. One of the highlights is the interview with Professor Lou Sabini and Retired Professional Photographer Nicholas Scutti, who back in 1945 was in the Navy and had an interest in photography...did I mention that Mr. Scutti tells stories about John Ford and John Wayne? it is a respectful and at times delightful interview. The photos show Ford, Wayne, and the cast and crew from the most candid perspective I have ever seen. THE EXTENSIVE PHOTOS ARE WRITTEN ABOUT WITH KNOWLEDGE, RESEARCH, AND CARE. A MUST FOR CLASSIC FILM FANS AND WWII HISTORIANS. THIS BOOK DESERVES SIX STARS, NOT FIVE!
