Excerpt from Military SurgeryWar Surgery differs widely from that which is seen in civil practice even in large hospitals where occasional gunshot injuries arc encountered, as the wounds thus seen are usually comparatively simple and are treated early before complications have arisen. Wounds in warfare, on the other hand, are much more severe, and, furthermore, owing to the delay in collecting the wounded from the battle-field and also the difficulties of transportation, complications have usually arisen before adequate surgical aid can be given. Furthermore, many of the cases present complex problems in treatment owing to the multiplicity of the wounds and their type - and this is especially true of the bones. Therefore, many new problems, both as regards treatment and the types of apparatus to be used, are constantly being brought to the notice of the military surgeon. In this book an attempt has been made to describe briefly the different forms of projectiles and the nature of the wounds which they cause, and the various complications which result from the different types of wounds. An attempt has also been made to show in a brief manner the principles of treatment which have been found to be most efficacious under the various conditions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I remember him as a wonderful man who gave freely of his knowledge By Gene Mosher Dr. Penhallow lived just three houses away from my family's home on Antwerp Street in Philadelphia, New York, during the 1950's and on several occasions acted as our family's doctor during the last 15 years of his life in retirement. I remember him as a wonderful man who gave freely of his knowledge, his expertise, his experience and of his time to our family, and to other families in the neighborhood. I remember his wife, Kathryn, too, who lived until 1986, doing chores for her during my teenage years in the early 1960's after Dr. Penhallow passed on. I never new until years later what an illustrious career and history that he had carved out for himself in England during The Great War and at Camp Drum (known as Fort Drum now) during World War Two and the years leading up to it. It is a wonderful thing to have known such a magnanimous, selfless man as Dr. Penhallow.
