Mathematical models, behavioral models, and self-perfection from playing video games. What? Video games? Oh, yes. Consider: In 1974, "The Inner Game of Tennis" took the world by storm -- millions of people who'd never swung a racket learned about grace and smooth performance from it. In 2008, the greatest Japanese novelist of this generation published "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running" -- and millions of non-runner non-authors flocked to Murakami's work to learn about immersion into the difficulty and pain of both running and writing -- and reaching self-perfection through that. Written while laid up from surgery, Sebastian Marshall brings you self-perfection through studying and mastering the most difficult type of video games -- Roguelikes. Following the tradition of Gallwey and Murakami, the book will resonate with those who play difficult games -- and build deep mental models for the non-gamers too.

Never have been, and this was a very enjoyable read. The book could have been called "Life Lessons Learned Playing Ridiculously Hard Games" or "The World Doesn't Care About You And That's OK"...but the author has more style than that. What I like about this author is his very unpretentious way of talking about ideas at an abstract level. This doesn't appeal to everyone. It's not "rigorous" like it would be if you had read about the same ideas in a textbook, but it communicates well. It's reads very easily. You don't have to stop and study what is being said. But you might stop and think about the implications of what has been said.

By Lambdanaut Roguelike is an insightful exploration of the metaphorical question: `If your life was a roguelike RPG, what strategies would you take to maximize gain?`Actionable insights include:* There's a difference between cognitive and conitive knowledge. THIS IS A BIG DEAL! Understand when you lack either kinds of knowledge and give yourself an abundance of time and other resources in order to explore the unknowns.* The difference between concrete-leaning and abstract-leaning people and how to learn from the kind that you're not* Learn skills that combo with your primary skill in such a way that you get exponential rather than linear gains.* Roguelikes aren't `fair`, and neither is life, but you can be okay with that. Consider your ethical system carefully and only make decisions that detract from your goal consciously. In addition, it pumped me up enough to dust off Nethack again.

A study in fingerspitzengefühl By Daniel This is an excellent primer on applying micro-scale critical thinking from digital games and puzzles to one's own character and skills development. At a basic level, I'm pleased to see the subject of learning from gaming take seriously, and look forward to applying the lessons herein to my own life and my company division. In a sense, I feel like the young businessperson that Marshall writes about in the text--educated, but lacking the fingerspitzengefühl of a veteran.
