Review ... if you enjoy games collections, or are interested in one of the most creative minds of the last thirty years, then it's one you should consider adding to your collection. (Ian Marks Chess Scotland)This book is wonderful. It features 40 very well annotated games (only 1 of which is in common with Kalinichenko's Ivanchuk book) with question and answer sections at instructive/critical moments. These are interspersed with diagrams, averaging over one a page. It is a large book, over 500 pages, with quality binding and glossy cover. (Stephen Ward ChessMastery.co.uk)

The Move by Move format includes a brief intro about player, then forty deeply analysed games, with a diagram on each page and a section of 20 exercise positions. The reader is asked: to assess the situation, propose a plan, calculate a variation, assess the position or consider alternative ideas. Tay writes in a lucid, vigorous and informative style. The games are understandable. I find each game needs about 60-90minutes to go through ( I study the book while eating breakfast, and it takes me 3 sessions to get though a game). I like how the book easily opens flat. Since it has single columns on each page, I don't have to bother with covering moves ahead on the page(s) with cardboard. Positions do not earn points, so I am not tempted to fudge a bit to achieve some dubious rating. The book has helped me better understand how to play positionally when not much is happening-- finding those small moves that improve things or keep the balance steady, before the tactical fight develops (most of our games are full of this type of play). This is a chess studybook. (a bit like Study Chess with Tal, or Dvoretsky's training books, or Larsen's Good Move Book-- although those are 5 star books). Tay writes like a teacher, building themes, repeating ideas to develop understanding. He is amplifying/illustrating known ideas through the beautiful games of Ivanchhuk.BE AWARE, this is not a best games collection! Tay has selected games for instruction purposes. Games are not in chronological order, nor are they grouped by openings, the bio section is admiring but not especially deep. Games are grouped by themes of play. Tay is a strong internet-correspondence player, a Fide master and a chess teacher. He is rated 2230 and teaches school in Singapore for a living. His level of depth is good for 1400-2200 players. He has thoroughly tested tactical positions with Houdini and relies on recent opening books for details, choices and recommendations. I have so far found him to be reliable for the purpose of self-training and instruction. He reads easily and identifies good spots to challenge the reader on. If you want a great collection of games on any world-class player, the author should be a strong GM, who is able explain the finer points, to interpret what Ivanchuk was probably thinking, and understand the character of playing chess an intense arena. For the purposes of learning, this book is a fine choice for players below 2200.

The book is written in a clear and entertaining style. And the selection of games! Some are with the world's top players but others are less known but strong players. All of them were instructive and very enjoyable. You have to try the puzzles as well - wonderfully chosen! Some of the ideas are so deep that after inevitably not finding the move and playing through the solution, you wil find yourself shaking your head in amazement. The best book so far from Tay!
