Insightful and Compelling Study of One of the Greatest Filmmakers By Tom Reynolds To dedicated film buffs and even the most casual movie-goer alike, the name "Hitchcock" alone is enough to trigger images in the mind's eye associated with mystery and suspense, even terror, that are instantly and automatically recalled: Thornhill (Cary Grant) in "North by Northwest," running through an open field while an airplane swoops down on him; the vulnerable Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly) in "Rear Window," searching Thorwald's (Raymond Burr) apartment, unaware of his imminent return, while wheelchair bound L.B. Jefferies (James Stewart) can do nothing but watch helplessly from his apartment across the way; Jo McKenna (Doris Day) in "The Man Who Knew Too Much," screaming at a pivotal point, just as a would-be assassin levels his gun at his intended target in a box at London's Albert Hall; and, of course, one of the most famous single scenes in film history, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) in "Psycho," screaming in terror as the knife-wielding Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) invades her ill-fated shower. But what is it that makes these scenes and films so memorable, even if it was a movie you saw only once, as a kid, in a dark theater on a Saturday afternoon? The answer to that question, and much, much more, can be found in "Hitchcock and the Methods of Suspense," the new book by writer and film historian William Hare. When it comes to cinema, Hare is a bona fide expert; simply put, he knows his stuff and it shows every page of this book. Most importantly, by fully utilizing the knowledge and expertise he's acquired through a lifetime of study and love of films, Hare presents here an engrossing examination of the methods, devices and themes repeatedly employed by Hitchcock, and which ultimately have made his films so memorable. From reading this book, it becomes evident that it is not by accident that, once viewed, the scenes and movies such as those mentioned above are subject to instant recall, even years later. For his study of Hitchcock, Hare has chosen fifteen of the Master's most famous films, which he places under a metaphorical microscope for thorough examination. He explores Hitchcock's use of what the filmmaker called "The MacGuffin,"which, simply put, is a device used to move the story along, but in and of itself is neither relevant nor important. In "The 39 Steps," for example, the MacGuffin is a secret formula with specifications for a new kind of fighter plane that may or may not have fallen into the hands of the enemy. In "Rebecca," Hitchcock's first American film, the MacGuffin is the mystery surrounding someone who is no longer living and, more importantly, is never seen in the film, even in flashbacks.According to Hare, another device used by Hitchcock is the introduction of what he calls "The cool blonde" into the story, the first of which was Madeleine Carroll in "The 39 Steps," the film, which Hare notes, established Hitchcock as a rising star within the filmmaking community. Subsequent films would feature "cool blondes" such as Eva Marie Saint, Tippi Hedren, Kim Novak and, of course, the exquisite Grace Kelly.Hare also examines the various aspects of "duality" employed by Hitchcock in his films- Uncle Charlie (played by Joseph Cotton) and his niece, Charlie (Teresa Wright), in "Shadow of a Doubt," for example- as well as the psychological facets of Hitchcock's stories and characters; elements he used repeatedly to infuse his tales with mystery and suspense. The author demonstrates, too, how the camera was such an integral part of the way Hitchcock worked. The filmmaker saw the camera, in fact, as paramount in bringing his visions to fruition. His understanding of the camera and the ways in which it's all-seeing eye could be used to optimum effect reflected yet another side of Hitchcock's genius.Another factor of Hitchcock's success explored by Hare is the integration of the romantic element into his films and, moreover, the careful casting of the of the actors that would make up these memorable onscreen couplings: Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll in "The 39 Steps"; Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine in "Rebecca"; Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman in "Spellbound"; Cary Grant and Grace Kelly in "To Catch a Thief"; Grant and Bergman in "Notorious"; and James Stewart and Kim Novak in "Vertigo," just to mention a few.In addition to the discussion of the filmmaker and his films, Hare also includes some interesting and entertaining anecdotes culled from Hitchcock's private life, which provide significant insights into the personal perspectives and peccadillos of the man himself, all of which became integral to much of what ultimately went into his films: The fact that he was a devoted family man, for instance, and that one of his most famous female story collaborators was his own wife, Alma. The influence of his Catholic upbringing and his paranoia of open spaces are two more examples of the ingredients that went into the Hitchcock recipe for mystery and suspense.Especially compelling is Hare's account of Hitchcock's stormy relationship with producer David O. Selznick, the very man responsible for bringing Hitch to Hollywood from England in the first place. How these two artists, each with their own individual perspective and vision of the same project clashed, beginning with their initial collaboration, "Rebecca," makes for a fascinating read.Hare's facility with words, the poetic rhythm of his prose and the thorough knowledge of his subject has produced a book that is not only informative, but highly entertaining. Like Hare's previous books on film noir, "Early Film Noir: Greed, Lust and Murder Hollywood Style," and "L.A. Noir: Nine Dark Visions of the City of Angels," "Hitchcock and the Methods of Suspense" brings a greater appreciation to the memorable films herein discussed, as well as the artists involved in their making. These are films which lend themselves to repeated viewings, and the background and insights provided here by William Hare serves to further enrich those addition viewings, making them an even more memorable and enjoyable experience.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "Hitchcock was a director of meticulous contrasts" By Folantin As a film lover fascinated by auteur theory, I decided that I'd overlooked film director Alfred Hitchcock for far too long, and so I approached William Hare's book, "Hitchcock and the Methods of Suspense" with eagerness. Obviously a labour of love for the author, the book traces Hitchcock's phenomenal career with an emphasis on the films and Hitchcock's techniques. This book is not a biography of Hitchcock--although there are plenty of details about Hitchcock's life--but these details are secondary to the in-depth analysis of many of Hitchcock's greatest films. The book begins with identifying the director's "breakthrough" film--"The 39 Steps"--and it was this film, the author argues that ensured Hitchcock would remain "emerge and remain a major film talent." Hitchcock was a man who was "ahead of [his] time and place" and this, Hare argues, caused creative difficulties for Hitchcock. Already by 1925, Hitchcock managed to ruffle the feathers of C.M. Woolf, an influential financier, and Woolf's early displeasure at Hitchcock's film, "The Pleasure Garden" led to Woolf becoming an "obstacle" to Hitchcock's career. This is later echoed in the troubled relationship between Hitchcock and David O. Selznick. The book explores Hitchcock's British and American phases--along with his favourite themes--"the innocent thrown into a sea of international political conflict" the use of voyeurism, the MacGuffin, and the individual against the forces of nature (influenced by Hitchcock's own paranoia of open places). If you are a Hitchcock aficionado or if you just want to learn more about the film career of this phenomenal director, then "Hitchcock and the Methods of Suspense" is a feast. Exploring the films in detail, the book captures Hitchcock's creative genius and reveals a deep appreciation of the director's unique, intuitive, and ultimately shrewd approach to understanding the art of film, his uncanny ability to select new talent, and exactly how Hitchcock connected with the psyche of his audience. The book includes many black and white photographs, a bibliography and an index--always appreciated by this reader--and I've no doubt that I'll refer to the wealth of information here as I watch--and re-watch--Hitchcock--including my own personal favourite--"Strangers on a Train"--displacedhuman

Excerpt from Modern Science and MaterialismThe preparation of this book has involved a study of many different branches of Science and Philosophy. As I completed my survey of these various branches in turn, I usually summed up the conclusions which I had gathered and published them as articles in the reviews, with the object partly of giving precision to the ideas, partly of gaining the advantage of criticism. It thus comes about that I have to make a number of acknowledgments for permission accorded me to republish parts of these articles in the present work. The greater part of Chapter I was published in the Candid Quarterly Review for November 1916. Certain portions of Chapter III appeared in the Edinburgh Review for January 1909, January 1911, and April 1912. Part of Chapter IV was published in Science Progress for January 1916. The theory of Chapter V was sketched in two articles in the Hibbert Journal in April and July 1916. Finally, a small part of Chapter VI, and many of the ideas of Chapter IV, were developed in articles in Bedrock in October 1912, July 1918, and January 1914. To the proprietors of these Reviews I tender my cordial thanks for their courtesy in allowing me to make use of these articles for the present work.I have also to thank Mr. Mark Barr for many valuable observations and criticisms on Chapter II.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of GynecologyThe author has attempted in this volume, so far as it is possible to do so on the printed page, to present the arrangement of the subject he has used in teaching during the last twenty years. His aim has been to present the subject concisely, accurately and without unnecessary waste of space. In several sections, notably those on the injuries of childbirth, their consequences, diseases of the breasts and hemorrhage, he has thought it best to consider the subject from the point of view of both the obstetrician and the gynecologist, as the two are so intimately connected that to present it in any other way would be at the expense of thoroughness and clarity.Throughout the book, an effort has been made to omit unprofitable discussion, and to give to the student, be he graduate or undergraduate, at least one method of treatment which has proven its value, as a basis on which to build as suggested by the individual's own experience.A special chapter deals with leukorrhea alone, one of the commonest disorders for which a patient consults her physician, and yet one which, because it is a symptom and not usually a primary condition, is too frequently passed over in the discussion of its primary cause. The operation of dilatation and curettage of the uterus - in the author's opinion is one of the most important, because of its supposed minor character - has been given somewhat extended space, being described three times, as its technic varies slightly for different indications.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although nothing else in the issue directly pertains to Lucio Fulci, Troy Howarth kicks off MONSTER! #16 by singing said late director’s praises in his “Fulciriffic” guest editorial (elsewhere in the issue, Troy also contributes Pt. 1 of his two-part article entitled “My Favorite Lycanthropes”, covering his fave cinematic werewolves). Our feature reviews spotlight the unsung Mexi-monster classic AVENTURA AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA and Michael Mann’s elusive cult favorite THE KEEP, which has yet to surface on either Blu-ray or DVD. Reviewed elsewhere are MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT (2014), SHE DEVIL (1957), WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM (1985), DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973), ALIEN SIEGE (2005), EVIL IN THE WOODS (1986), THE SLIME PEOPLE (1963), BREEDERS (1986), THE BLACK HOLE (2006), as well as the obscure Indian horror shocker PYASI APSARA (1991). Not only does seasoned MONSTER! veteran Stephen R. Bissette cover a pair of obscure Mexican creature features, but he also pays further tribute to the recently deceased Ib “REPTILICUS” Melchior, as well as focusing on the influence of Mr. Melchior’s canon – in addition to numerous other pop-cultural influences – on Ridley Scott’s recent Hollywood blockbuster PROMETHEUS (2012), whose debts to psychotronic movies / SF pulp fiction and comics (etc.) are legion; even if most might well sail high over the heads of the “average” modern moviegoer. Elsewhere in M! 16, Bill Adcock gives us “No Way These Are Local Boys!”; an affectionate look back over the TREMORS series, complete with some fascinating hypotheses as to the real world zoological roots of the films’ earth-burrowing monsters, the Graboids. In the second installment of his entertaining regular column “From the Cheese Returned”, José Cruz covers two mummy movies from early in this the new millennium: namely BRAM STOKER’S THE MUMMY, starring Louis Gossett, Jr., and Russell Mulcahy’s TALE OF THE MUMMY, starring Jason Scott Lee. Other contributors to this issue were Mark Savage, Dawn Dabell, Eric Messina, Adam Parker-Edmondston, Dennis Capicik, Christos Mouroukis, Les Moore, Brian Harris, Steve Fenton, and Tim Paxton. As per usual, detailed information as to the video availability of the titles covered within the ’zine round out the contents, and it is jam-packed with illustrations throughout.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Want monsters? Get'em here! By Fred Adelman How Tim Paxton and his stable of knowledgeable writers keep turning out such and excellent zine every month is one of those great mysteries of life that you never question, in fear that it may end if you do. This is yet another excellent issue that contains reviews of monster movies from around the world. Steve Fenton starts it off (after a heartfelt guest editorial by Troy Howarth) with a review of the Mexican horror film AVENTURA AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA (1964; which I went out and bought the DVD even though it is not English friendly) which, based on the photos and Steve's excellent review, seems like a must-see. Who cares if you don't understand Spanish? Stephen R. Bissette then follows-up with reviews of two more Mexican monster films, GIGANTES PLANETARIOS (1967) and LA ISLA DE LOS DINOSAURIOS (1967; I don't think we need a translator to know what that means!). Dawn Dabell then does an extensive review of THE KEEP (1983) and how Paramount edited the film out of director Michael Mann's hands and still hasn't released the film on DVD or Blu-Ray (I still enjoy the edited R-rated 96 minute version). What follows next are a slew of monster film reviews written by the likes of Brian Harris, Adam Parker-Edmonston, Mark Savage (his extensive review of THE SLIME PEOPLE - 1963 is a corker) and many others. Great stuff and undeniably enjoyable reading for those not familiar with some of the films reviewed (such as EVIL IN THE WOODS, WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM, BREEDERS and MONSTERS: THE DARK CONTINENT [sequel to one of my favorite independent 2010 films MONSTERS], and others). Tim does an extensive review of the Indian monster flick PYASI APSARA (1991) and then writers Dennis Capicik and Les Moore tell you everything you need to know about the 1957 horror film SHE DEVILS (a favorite TV staple of mine during the 70's). Writer Jared Cruz then writes about a duo of modern-day mummy films; BRAM STOKER'S THE MUMMY (1998) and RUSSELL MULCAHY'S TALE OF THE MUMMY (also 1998).Troy Howarth then regales us with his favorite werewolf films, starting with WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935) and then ending asking the question: Which is the best werewolf film of 1981: An AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON or THE HOWLING? He will sort out that dilemma in the next issue.Stephen R. Bissette then does two articles on the late Ib Melchoir. The first one deals with how the film PROMETHEUS would not exist without Melchoir and the second article is his continuing heartfelt tribute to Melchoir that began in Issue #15. Bill Adcock then reviews all the TREMOR films (they are all quite good). It all ends with the always-entertaining Movie Checklist, where Steve Fenton, Tim Paxton and Dennis Capicik mention where all of the films reviewed in this issue can be purchased and throw in little factoids of the films that weren't mentioned in the reviews. Once again, another way above average 105-page issue that should be on every monster fan's must-read list. A steal at $5.95. Seriously, it's a steal.

This is all the lowdown on all films monstrous from all over the world. Not only does it cover retrospects on and over views on a world wide scale, (what more could you want? Let me tell you! ) at the close of each article there is info on the availability of each film discussed and where to get it! The info is supplied by experts on each film, not just more opinion scribblers. I mean, really now! Wow!!! How great is that?

The recipe you will read about in “Happiness Step By Step: the most practical how-to guide to more happiness in your everyday life, and... the most unusual easy running guide” book works. The book is written for “general public” – as in: most people would be able to use it right away. What I am sharing with you in this book – helps. It will help you to find happiness in your life, to become even happier if you are happy already. It’s a relatively short book. – I am a very pragmatic and practical person. I devoted most of my life to science (doctor, professor, even one of the leaders of a discovery that received a Nobel Prize). So, I will do my best to be to the point, to be practical, and to be as much of use to you as I possibly can. From reviews: • Read this book and recommend it to your friends. Muldowney Having written two books about running, I frequently enjoy reading other writers perspectives about our sport and its benefits.I recently read, Happiness Step By Step: The most practical how-to guide to more happiness in your everyday life, and...the most unusual easy running guide, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.Most of know that running is a positive addiction. In this book, the author explains the addictive nature of running, and lists reasons why we should embrace the addiction. The book begins by outlining what are the things in life that really make us happy. There are a lot of unhappy millionaires out there. Movie stars, professional athletes, and other high-profile individuals may have reached a level of success, but many are dreadfully unhappy. For the person who may need motivation to begin an exercise regimen, the author is a superb salesman. He offers many concrete reasons why it is time to get up from the sofa and get out for a run. And to make it easier for non-runners, he suggests an easy, regular workout schedule.Peace-of-mind, stress release, camaraderie, and physical wellness are all incentives for those who may be reluctant to become runners.Simply, the author has, in a short, concise manner, written a recipe book that links running with happiness. In a sense, he is a preacher and veteran runners are the choir. We all want more members of our running congregation, and this book is an excellent method of spreading our running gospel.Read this book and recommend it to your friends. It is free and packed with advice that all runners can benefit from.Joe Muldowney, author of the books, 'Running Shorts,' and 'Personal Best'

I've always been and am an enthusiastic exerciser, however, I didn't think jogging was my thing. In any case, Usual Oddman presents such a compelling argument in his book that I just had to try it and I'm glad I did. If you try it please stick to his "easy jogging" method. Just read the book and you'll understand why his method is geared to create a recharging of the mind and so far I have to agree. Prior to reading this book if I had tried jogging I probably would have turned it into a high intensity workout, this is not the author's purpose. Remember, it's about achieving a happy state of mind. Please read his book and test this out for yourself. I feel this will work for all ages. I'm almost fifty years old and loving it. Furthermore, I emailed the author with questions and he was quick to respond and so very kind.

Running Your Happiness Race By Cayce Hrivnak This author brings a different approach to achieving happiness that other authors haven't discussed about. Author Usual Oddman, explains the importance of jogging and running. Jogging can get your blood pumping, your body working, and your mind rolling through various things. By beginning a healthy lifestyle, it will leak into your day-to-day work.We receive a list of things that make us happy. Now, there are steps to achieving this. Start off slow, then pick up the pace in your race. Then you'll get faster and faster till it becomes the easiest thing to do in this life.Happiness doesn't come from money, it comes from the feeling of letting those emotions go through running.
