STAND LIKE A MOUNTAIN by Terry Muncy By Sandy Long This is a story that takes place in a real place and describes real circumstances, only the characters are fictional. But having been born and raised in the area I can truthfully tell you that the characters in this book represent a real people, real circumstances, and that makes this book come alive. It draws you in until you feel that these are your friends and you become so emotionally involved in the story that you feel a part of it. You cry with them, laugh with them, you feel their pain and share their joy. It brings back memories of carefree childhood days in a simple place with simple pleasures and surrounded by breath taking beauty. It also gives the reader a very realistic picture of what has happened to a part of our nation that once was the coal capitol of the world but now is struggling with unemployment and poverty due to the closing of the mines. This story is told from the view of the people who have lived it and seen it happen. A story of the struggles of poverty, the temptation of drugs, easy to come by, easy money to sell and easy to escape the pain, physical and emotional. But we also see how this seemingly easy way out destroys lives. The reader finds him/herself wanting to help these good people and hoping for the happily ever after ending but in real life that does not always happen. This new author has written a compelling book that will fascinate and entertain you, but will also open your eyes to a way of life that may be entirely alien to you. You will read the last page hoping that there will be a follow-up to this great novel because you have become friends with these characters and you want to know more about what happens to them and to a way of life that is loved and missed by many people as they struggle to rebuild their communities and pull themselves out of poverty and rid their communities of drug pushers. I LOVE this book.
