This unusual and highly engaging memoir is presented like a sandwich. In the top layer, the author, Kerry Jacobson, describes his hospitalization with bulbar polio and subsequent treatment in 1952. He was seven years old. His account provides a glimpse into a world doing its best to cope with a terrifying and deadly epidemic. This opening chapter was originally published as a blog post and constituted Jacobson's decision to "come out" as a polio survivor. He believed that he and too many of his peers, fearing the 1950's polio stigma, had successfully hidden their illnesses and unwittingly allowed people to remain unaware of the threat polio continues to pose. Writing about his hospitalization unexpectedly inspired the rest of the sandwich. The sandwich filling is the seventeen stories drawn from the fifties and sixties: between 1952, when Jacobson was seven, to 1968, when he was twenty-three. These were the years of "relative stability" when polio symptoms tend to remain stable and ,for the author, allowed him to live "Life Before Post Polio Syndrome". Remember teen dances at the Community Center? high school football? fraternity parties? These humorous, irreverent stories will introduce you to memorable characters including Grandma Dix, Kippy Myers, Stonewall Jacobson, and the unruly Beta Nation. The stories take place in three settings: Des Moines, Iowa where the author grew up and a place he still holds close to his heart; Lake Forest Academy, where Jacobson attended boarding school for two years, seven months, and eight days; and Stanford University where he wishes he had studied more as an undergraduate. There's even a side trip to Mexico. The bottom piece of the sandwich is the Retrospective, where the author candidly - at times confessionally - re- examines the impact of polio on his life, and realizes that he must dramatically change his view of who he is. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Making the Best if the Hand That was Dealt Him By Chipcur This is one of the best books that I have ever read. Kerry Jacobson is a gifted writer, and he takes you through the experience of having Polio in pre-Salk vaccine days. The descriptions are vivid . You live the experience with him including the later embarrassment of having had polio and therefore keeping it secret from his friends. Unfortunately, he smoked excessively, which has caused a lot of his current maladies- emphysema , hardening of the lungs and a myriad of others. Including post-polio syndrome ,which could turn into polio again. While he is not as mobile as he was, he has a very pleasant life ,spending a lot of time on the internet, watching movies , which he loves ,and has access to every movie ever made, some before they are even released! He never says, " Why me?" He never complains, he just goes with the flow and plays the hand that was dealt him. One always wonders why bad things happen to good people. In this case, I am convinced that God put Kerry on earth to be an inspiration to others . It's too bad it is so tough on him, but reading his life story is an inspiration. I have summarized his myriad of ailments, but it's fair to say that Job didn't have as much as Kerry. I enthusiastically recommend this book for a great, enlightening and inspirational read."
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Views of bygone era and forgotten affliction By cies This is a great glimpse of several topics that few know anything about. First, Kerry gives an inside view of the physical difficulties of post-polio syndrome: something many are not aware of since most of us feel the disease is over, eradicated. Those afflicted in the 50's are a largely silent minority. How his strong spirit dealt with it leads us into funny youthful antics, which are related in a refreshing style. Maybe Iowans know Iowa but many in non-Midwest states don't know life in a largely rural area, again viewed through arise of the 50's. Lastly Jake provides a small glimpse into his college follies which from personal experience are underplayed: not enough of that. Maybe another book. And, this is well written

Important social history By Anne Kotch Reading this is like sitting with a clever and mischievous friend while he tells funny and compelling stories that turn out to be serious and far more important than you imagined. I think that in a time when many parents of young children are suspicious of vaccinations it is vital that we call attention to the long story of polio. That long story is not only medical. It is social as well, and Jacobson does a wonderful job of painting a picture of a disease and its consequences that we cannot afford to lose.
