Jazz Arpeggios, Extensions and Substitutions to Develop & Enrich Your Playing

Learn the best arpeggios to use over the thirteen most common chord sequences in jazz and bebop guitar playing.

Learn to Approach Jazz Guitar the Right Way

Jazz guitar can be a challenging style of music to learn. As guitarists we are often more comfortable playing scales rather than the true building blocks of jazz solos; arpeggios, so it can be difficult for us to emulate and build authentic bebop language.

Musically Apply Jazz Guitar Arpeggios to the 13 Most Important Chord Progressions in Jazz

There are many different bebop chord progressions, but in essence they can be broken down into just thirteen simple structures. Chord Tone Soloing for Jazz Guitar teaches you to how to use arpeggios, extensions, chromatic ideas and substitutions over each of the thirteen essential jazz sequences, and how to combine these building blocks into authentic, melodic solos.

Each progression is approached both logically and methodically to build articulate guitar solos from the fundamental principles of jazz guitar. By applying arpeggio-based techniques, and learning to decorate your solos with chromatic ideas, you will quickly learn how to 'play the changes' in a musical and creative way.

Chord Tone Soloing for Jazz Guitar helps you build an articulate jazz language around the most important sequences in jazz.

Play the Changes

Jazz soloing developed around the concept of 'hitting the changes' and by combining rich arpeggios with chromatic ideas you will quickly master the jazz guitar language.

Learn to

• Target Chord Changes with Arpeggios• Add Richness and Colour with Arpeggio Extensions• Form Interesting and Exciting Lines with Chromatic Approach Notes• Use 'Outside' Substitutions to add Altered Tensions to your Playing• Develop your Solos using Essential Rhythmic Concepts

Joseph is strong in explaining some fine details and will guide you in very understandable (easy to digest/small steps/applicable) way from ii V I to other more complicated yet still very frequent jazz chord progressions. I compared the progressions he included in this book with article "6 Common Chord Relationships that You Need to Know Now" on jazzadvice.com. Except the I vii (half-diminished) relationship all of them are included in progressions Joseph studies in his book. So, I think that he has chosen the progressions very well and I think it is better to study longer progressions than just two chord relationships.I was afraid that this book will have big overlap with his book Fundamental changes in jazz guitar, but the overlap is rather smaller and this book together with Minor ii V Mastery and the mentioned Fundamental changes form very good trio that I encourage everyone to buy.

Consistent Quality Instruction By Jon Schwartz I'm buying this volume in Alexander's collection because previous purchases of several of his method books have really helped me develop both in the specific techniques in those books, and also with an overall approach to an emerging "curriculum" for my level, using his books. Others have pointed out the clarity of Alexander's writing and methods. I concur. There are many guitar methods, old and new. Many have quite good material. Alexander's benefit in my opinion from his skill as a teacher. I believe many of us buy method books to use without a teacher. When that is the case, the value of a given book can often rise or fall depending upon the author's ability to convey in print what a *good* teacher can do in person. I'm not suggesting books can replace teachers! However a good writer can explain concepts AND pace corresponding, effective exercises and materials so that a person can learn what is intended much more easily than otherwise would be the case. This Alexander consistently does, and does well. When matched with critical material for specific genres, it's an unbeatable combination.I have a micro and macro suggestion or request that I hope Alexander will consider. First, within each book there are normally excellent instructions and explanations for each segment. But in the many cases where several distinct and largely independent techniques are set forth, each of which are core to the book's theme, it could be helpful to make a clear overview of more than a suggested schedule for various techniques. Do I stop practicing all elements in one chapter when working on another chapter on a separate technique? When various elements are not clearly sequential, suggestions on an approach to completing the entire book would be helpful to the independent learner. Do i simply stop practicing material in one part of the book and move on? Or try and juggle more and more of the techniques until the one book fills my available daily practice time? Alexander sometimes suggests how much time to devote to a "chunk" of exercises. I'd like to see that applied to the scope,of the book. The second, macro, suggestion, is similar. The growing body of Alexander's varied catalog is an embarrassment of riches! I find myself wishing for curricula, or syllabus, a framework for his many useful books. Some are clearly entry level, beginner books. There are several series "Fundamentals", "The Complete..." I have a couple that mention another book in the introductions. What would be immensely helpful (and perhaps encourage further purchases?) would be a PDF "map" of how various of his books might logically fit in a student's development. Certainly there are different musical genres that set some books apart. But his collection is large now, and usefully conceived. Where might "Jazz Blues Soloing" fit if one is currently working on "Fretboard Fluency" and "Guitar Chords In Context"? Should the present volume follow the "Fundamentals in Jazz Guitar" series? These suggestions came up because i consider myself a long term customer, student in effect, of Alexander and want to make good choices and effective plans for practicing as time goes by.

I bought more than ten of his books, and every time rejoice that there is such an interesting author. Yes, that is right - except that his books are extremely useful in practical sense, they are still interesting. Abundant illustrative material in the notation and tablature allows you to see the desired positions on the guitar fingerboard and to understand the shape of the chord currently played over. For those who decided to expand their jazz vocabulary, this book will be useful finding. I highly recommend Chord Tone Soloing.

“The foregoing is a reproduction of a book published in 1860, giving the strange history of this Indian Captive. After returning to civilization, he resided for a few months in Carey and Fostoria, and made several lecture tours giving an account of his adventures and the manners and customs of the Indians.

“This mode of life was too much of a change from the wild life he had been living, and when the war of the Rebellion broke out he enlisted in an Indiana Regiment, and went to the South to fight for his country. He proved a brave soldier, but while in the service he was taken dangerously ill, and after a short sickness died at Pittsburgh Landing in 1862.”

Wrong!Either Brayton had an excellent ghostwriter and imagination or he wrote a good account of a mythical subject. Won't see this in many school libraries.By the way I may be related to Mathew in some fashion. That's why I got interested in the title.B L Brayton Southern Californiaby the way we lived for a few short years in St Anthony

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Indian Captive By Colin Saxton Very unusual read. Short and to the point, it is a diary style of a true story of a young boy captured by Indians. He became part of their tribe for 34 years, and then returned to the white man's world to write this short story. Very interesting.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Authentic! By Bea Daniels I got this book for my husband who is a history buff and loves reading about the Native American cultures. He really enjoyed this book, the tale of a man who was held captive by several different tribes (sold or traded from one to another). His story takes place over 34 years. My husband really enjoyed reading this authentic narrative.

Fasten your seat belts for Terry Sweeney's wild ride from bullied gay kid of blue collar bigots to successful film and television writer/performer. His showbiz horror stories will take you on a delightfully acid-tongued trip to Hollywood Hell and back; and ultimately to the heart of Dixie in the reddest state in the Union. Sweeney peoples his pages with everyone from the certifiably insane to the irritatingly clueless and manages to speak out for all of us against the many petty tyrants that walk all over us all everyday. This book is for anyone who's ever asked themselves can I walk away from a life that's making me crazy and start over again somewhere else and find one that makes me happy. Sweeney's hilariously foolhardy foray into life in a small Southern town will both delight and inspire. His unique comedic voice will have you fantasizing about escaping your own private hell and packing your bags to live next door to him.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. As Touching as it is Funny, and it is Very Funny By Ms. Susan Murphy I expected Terry Sweeny's book to be funny. After all, he did make us all laugh on SNL. However, what I didn't expect is how utterly touching it would be. This book is a laugh-a-thon, no doubt However, it is also the story of a sensitive, open, caring and extremely intelligent person. I laughed like a fool when I was reading it, but what stuck with me was the depth of Terry Sweeny's character that shone through. Do not miss this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Funniest Book Ever Written (No Kidding!!!!!!) By MHertz25 I had known that Terry Sweeney had the distinction of being the first openly gay performer on US TV, and his one of a kind, hysterically funny iconic impression of First Lady Nancy Reagan in the 1980s was certainly one for the ages. Following his career since that time, I had read/heard that he personally was one of the funniest people anyone had ever met, etc. This book proves it, without a doubt. His stories, insights, perceptions about both Hollywood inanities, family dysfunction, quirky neighbors, etc. are priceless. You will laugh so hard at what you read that you will think you're at a comedy club watching/hearing the best of the best. I personally had the good fortune (or misfortune, as the case may be) to be reading the book on both a commuter train and a NY subway. In both places I laughed out loud and was forced to literally bite my lip so my fellow passengers wouldn't think I was crazy (well......). This book is absolute comic perfection. You will laugh, you will cry, you will laugh until you cry. Bravo Terry. Your book needs to be read by every single person who is alive and breathing on the planet earth!!!!! Did I mention I liked it a lot?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book is a medicine show of laughter and a tonic to your health. By Joe Bergin As Norman Cousins, the writer and alternative health pioneer who cured himself from a near fatal illness by watching Marx Brothers movies would maintain, the prescription for IBS would be laughter. For if, as we have learned, laughter is the best medicine in life, this book is a medicine show of laughter and a tonic to your health.I can't remember the last time a book made me laugh out loud, wince, frown, cry out in sympathy, bristle with indignation, then laugh again. This is what great comedy does for us.I don't know about you, but I just saw King Lear on the Common and I'll take comedy anytime, particularly Terry Sweeney's kind.He has a kind of Balzacian touch as he befriends you and guides you through his various neighborhoods of La Comedie humaine.Highly recommended. Have bought extra copies for friends.

Good intro to uke riffs By true britty This is a good book for a beginner uke player who wants to try something besides strumming chords. There is only one riff, Tom Petty's Free Falling, that incorporates chords. The other riffs are fingerpicked, which gets you moving around the fretboard to locate notes. Hammer ons, pull offs, slides and bends are used sparingly and the author explains how to do them. Many examples are well known: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy. And there are newer examples too. The familiarity is a good thing because the book is not in standard notation, so you don't know how long to hold each note. You will have to work from memory or pull up the song on YouTube or Spotify. Which is a good idea anyway.

This book instructs the reader on how to read tabs incase you are a beginner and then includes how to play riffs on a great selection of songs. Read Ebook A Fine Romance, by Candice Bergen

In this New York Times bestseller, acclaimed actress Candice Bergen “shows how to do a memoir right...The self-possessed, witty, and down-to-earth voice that made Bergen’s first memoir a hit when it was published in 1984 has only been deepened by life’s surprises” (The New York Times Book Review).“Candice Bergen is unflinchingly honest” (The Washington Post), and in A Fine Romance she describes her first marriage at age thirty-four to famous French director Louis Malle; her overpowering love for her daughter, Chloe; the unleashing of her inner comic with Murphy Brown; her trauma over Malle’s death; her joy at finding new love; and her pride at watching Chloe blossom. In her decidedly nontraditional marriage to the insatiably curious Louis, Bergen takes readers on world travels to the sets where each made films. Pregnant with Chloe at age thirty-nine, this mature primigravida also recounts a journey through motherhood that includes plundering the Warner Bros. costume closets for Halloween getups and never leaving her ever-expanding menagerie out of the fun. She offers priceless, behind-the-scenes looks at Murphy Brown, from caterwauling with Aretha Franklin to the surreal experience of becoming headline news when Dan Quayle took exception to her character becoming a single mother. Bergen tackles familiar rites of passage with moving honesty: the rigors of caring for a spouse in his final illness, getting older, and falling in love again after she was tricked into a blind date. By the time the last page is turned, “we’re all likely to be wishing Bergen herself—funny, insightful, self-deprecating, flawed (and not especially concerned about that), and slugging her way through her older years with bemused determination—was living next door” (USA TODAY).

A Fine Romance, by Candice Bergen

Review "Candice Bergen shows how to do a memoir right. . . . The self-possessed, witty, and down-to-earth voice that made Bergen's first memoir a hit when it was published in 1984 has only been deepened by life's surprises. . . . As a fictional newswoman, Murphy Brown was iconically brassy. As a memoirist, Candice Bergen is flesh-and-blood classy." (The New York Times Book Review)“Bergen is . . . daring in her smart, self-mocking memoir A Fine Romance. . . . She’s awfully good company.” (The Wall Street Journal)“Bergen may not have had Murphy’s sharp elbows or unswerving career focus, but she reveals herself to be just as complicated and sophisticated as her television counterpart—and infinitely more introspective. . . . [A Fine Romance] succeeds in the way a good memoir should. It presents a human life in full—with great glories and heartaches and watercolored memories. Bergen tells her story with humor, confidence and candor. Perhaps she’s not so different from Murphy after all." (The Washington Post)“A Fine Romance is just that. Candice tells her own story with honesty and humor—a story of loves lost and found, of marriages, joys and heartaches. I am not sure Candice ever realized her own beauty or how well she writes. Well, she is, and she does.” (Barbara Walters)“Candice Bergen's memoir is moving with the wisdom that only age can bring. The woman you thought had everything has been through more than most of us could bear. Revelatory, anguished, and utterly inspirational.” (Bette Midler, author of A View from a Broad)"You'll fall for Bergen's A Fine Romance. . . . Her writing and storytelling are superb throughout. . . . With this memoir, we're all likely to be wishing Bergen herself—funny, insightful, self-deprecating, flawed (and not especially concerned about that), and slugging her way through her older years with bemused determination—was living next door.” (USA Today)“Candice’s book is candid, honest, interesting, and reading it, you love her more than ever.” (Diane von Furstenberg, author of The Woman I Wanted to Be)“Bergen is a talented and graceful writer—something she first demonstrated in Knock Wood, which chronicled her Hollywood youth and coming of age as the daughter of famed comedian and ventriloquist Edgar Bergen. Her literary voice is enormously engaging, capable of infusing considerable wit and poignancy. . . . She has something real to say here, and one hopes that her journey will continue for many years to come—and that eventually she'll write about that too.” (Chicago Tribune)“Candy's memoir is intimate and surprisingly candid. We learn, we laugh, we marvel because her voice is as honest, funny, and rapier-smart as Murphy’s. Add in self-reflection and self-deprecation and you have one heck of a great read.” (Lesley Stahl, 60 Minutes correspondent)“Candy gives us a glimpse into the fascinating world of fame and shares with us the ordinary in the extraordinary.” (Carrie Fisher, author of Postcards from the Edge and Wishful Drinking)"Three decades after writing her memoir Knock Wood, Candice Bergen has penned a follow-up, A Fine Romance . . . with candor, humor and poignancy." (LA Times)"A surprisingly frank and even bawdy mélange of celebrity fairy tale, marriage confessional and accounting of the mundane." (The New York Times)"Candice Bergen’s follow-up to her Knock Wood is among the more commendable celebrity memoirs you’ll encounter. . . . Along with writing skill . . . you’ll be impressed with [her] candor and wisdom." (The Buffalo News (Editor's Choice))"A Fine Romance is full of heart. Even though Bergen is surrounded by celebrity friends at the turn of every page, it's evident she is about as down-to-earth as they come. There is an honesty in her writing that is both refreshing and encouraging.” (Associated Press)“Bergen has a way of making readers think they are friends who understand her life and know her dreams and frustrations. The book is forthcoming and refreshingly human.” (The Examiner)“Bergen’s rapier wit, warm personality and unflinching honesty make these stories of life and love all the more appealing.” (Bookpage)"With her trademark wit, Bergen leads readers through the highs and lows of her professional and personal life in this entertaining and poignant memoir chock-full of Hollywood cameos. . . . Never afraid to poke fun at herself or celebrity culture, Bergen is as fresh, funny, and biting as Murphy Brown was nearly 30 years ago." (Publishers Weekly)“A glamorously bittersweet showbiz memoir.” (Kirkus)“Honest, self-deprecating and well-written.” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

It was midway through October 1985, as I waddled in a huge plaid tent dress through the ground floor of Bergdorf’s. I’d put on almost fifty pounds since becoming pregnant. A woman kept peering at me, looking away, looking back. Finally she approached. “You know, you have Candice Bergen’s face.” “But not her body,” I said. Old friends saw me lurching along the street and burst out laughing. I scowled back. Would this baby be born in a hospital or at SeaWorld? The due date was the second half of October. I’d been hoping she’d arrive on Halloween, which was the day after my husband Louis Malle’s birthday. As the date grew closer, then passed, I went in for a checkup. Whoever was in there, she was hyperactive, that much was sure. She somersaulted and flipped around. Then she landed wrong. Her feet were tangled in the umbilical cord and she was upside down and feet first. There was a high risk of her cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients. A risk of brain damage. My obstetrician, the ironically named Dr. Cherry, was an affable, easygoing guy, but he grew concerned after the recent sonogram. “We need to think about scheduling a Cesarean,” he told me. Meanwhile, I was to go home and stay in bed with my feet up. No activity. That would be interesting, as Louis and I lived in a two-story loft and were having people for dinner that night. That was the beginning of the real bonding. Until that point, I’d kept a bit of distance, thinking of the baby as a kind of invader in my comfortable routines. I’d dragged my feet about preparing her room. No longer. It was ready, wallpapered in tiny pink rosebuds. I’d bought a white rocker and a white crib with pink ticking on the mattress and bumpers and found a pink Kit-Cat clock whose eyes and tail moved rhythmically back and forth. Now the Alien was in jeopardy. I could not lose her. Louis and I had been invited to a state dinner at the White House in honor of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was the big wingding of the fall, and the royal couple was causing quite the stir. It was possible we could make it if the baby was prompt. The dinner was November 6. I figured we could take the train with the newborn and a baby nurse and stay in DC for a night. I would look like a blimp, but we could attend. As the date inched closer and there was no sign of a baby, I called Nancy Reagan, who has been a family friend all my life, and apologized for the delayed response. “Mrs. Reagan, she’s not moving,” I told her. She couldn’t have been sweeter. “Well, they’d love you to be there, Candy. Let us know when you can. Of course we understand.” What I didn’t understand was where this baby was. What was keeping her? At almost two and a half weeks past the due date, Dr. Cherry told me he’d decided to extract the baby by cesarean in three days; he was afraid she might have “exhausted prepartal nutrients.” Apparently my amniotic fluid was drying up. She was running out of snacks. The Kit-Cat clock was ticking. I was not in the market for abdominal surgery. I wanted to have this baby naturally. More or less. I did the few primitive things that were suggested to induce labor. Three of my closest girlfriends took me out to dinner and I ate the spiciest things on the menu, hoping to bring on contractions. Sweat streamed down my tiny head and pooled under my newly enlarged breasts. Nothing. I heaved my 180 pounds sixteen floors up to my apartment to see if that would get her moving. Zilch. Louis was giving me a wide berth; I was getting testy. Louis and I went to Mount Sinai Hospital the next day, November 8, 1985. The surgery was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. We were shown to a pre-op room and I undressed and got into a gown. They gave me oxytocin as a last gasp to start contractions. No dice. The baby was dug in. Dr. Cherry came in with the anesthesiologist and introduced him. He had clammy hands and a mustache that screamed “Shave me!” This was not a guy who seemed cool under pressure. He recognized me and appeared nervous. This was the guy who was going to give me the dreaded epidural? Women had been warning me about this shot, which is given in the base of the spine and is generally successful at blocking pain, except when it results in paralysis. The anesthesiologist told me to curl into the fetal position, which I did, but I was babbling incessantly, compulsively. I am not a good patient. The anesthesiologist also seemed stressed. He mentioned a movie I was in. I was freezing and shivering and the needle looked like a harpoon. Finally, he managed to give me the epidural, and I was wheeled down the battleship gray hall into the operating room. Louis walked beside me in his gown. The nurses erected a discreet sheet to screen any activity below the waist. Louis sat by my head. They started to swab me but I could feel it, and then I really panicked. The upside of the epidural was, I wasn’t paralyzed. The downside was, I wasn’t numb. Hey, guys, I’m not numb! I CAN FEEL EVERYTHING! This was a definite crick in the procedure. “Give her a shot of Valium and administer another spinal,” someone said. I resumed the fetal position. The anesthesiologist came at me with another harpoon. I wondered, Is this really the best guy you got here?!? Things got blurry; then I got a third epidural. Enough medication for a rhino, which in a sense I had become. I was groggy beyond belief, but I could still feel a prickling in my legs. I might have heard the word paresthesia. Was I going to feel it when the surgeon cut through my abdomen? Because I would not be okay with that. I was stoned and ranting and raging. “Do you feel this?” Dr. Cherry asked as he jabbed a pin in my leg. And then . . . murmuring, movement, a team at work. Louis watched it as the director he was. The curtain set up. People beyond it performing together. And suddenly a cry. A really loud cry. That would be my daughter crying. Bellowing. All nine pounds two ounces of her had been pried out of my ample abdomen, where she’d made a home—carpet, armchair, reading lamp, sound system—she was not happy about moving out. Now the trouble begins, I thought. Schools. Mean girls. Boyfriends. SATs. Now it hits the fan. Mademoiselle Chloe Malle. I heard Louis singing softly to her in French: “À la claire fontaine . . .” She’d been wrapped like a burrito and he held her gently in his arms, crooning. She relaxed and quieted, scrutinizing him. I was sobbing. So much emotion. So many drugs. She was placed in my arms now, cautiously, since I was so medicated that I was completely gaga. As if I would let anything happen. Again, the tears streamed down my cheeks. My baby girl. My baby girl. Who knew love was this huge? All-enveloping. All-encompassing. My baby girl. My God, I can’t believe I almost didn’t do this. It was clearly the beginning of my life. In the recovery room upstairs, Chloe was brought back to me, steamed and cleaned, fierce and irresistible. Ali MacGraw and Anne Sterling, two of my closest friends, had been waiting in the hospital lobby. They came up to meet Chloe and give me a pat on the head. I was having trouble speaking clearly, what with my dozens of epidurals, plus I was still weeping. But I was aglow. Chloe is here. Chloe is here. I was happier than I ever thought possible. Chloe is here.

By Geneva Mae Lewis As a preteen my Mom and I would watch Murphy Brown every week on TV...we followed Murphy from the first to the last episode. Growing up in the Midwest, being exposed to a woman who was a career woman: bold, stylish, at turns sardonic and sensitive...the show, and Candice Bergen's portrayal, captured my attention and forever love. Remember when Dan Quayle tried to make Murphy a poster child for unwed mothers? Murphy Brown was a groundbreaking television program, and this book has, if possible, made me like Candice Bergen even more- as a person, not as a talented actress. The story weaves reflection, life events, and the incredible twists, turns, and surprises that life holds. Beautifully written, the trajectory of the story spans critical years in Candice's mid-thirties to today. Louis Malle, the French filmmaker, becomes her first husband, and she discusses the dilemmas of cross-cultural marriages, as well as the joys. She struggles with the decision to have a child or not, and becomes a mother...her description of the ambiguities and dilemmas of the pros and cons of motherhood put into expression the thoughts many women have, in a witty and thoughtful manner. When the pilot for Murphy Brown is green-lighted by the network, Candice's life changes forever: a demanding but exhilarating work life, real-life motherhood and marriage amid widespread acclaim. She wins an Emmy the first year. Career and financial success is solidified, but her marriage with Malle becomes strained as his work life is increasingly centered in France, hers in Los Angeles. Her career success proves challenging for Malle's ego.As Murphy Brown settles into its final seasons, Malle becomes terminally ill, and she describes the brutal realities of working and caregiving, poignantly illustrated when the consummate professional cannot remember the 50 plus pages of dialogue per week, and her daughter Chloe with dark circles under her eyes in her 9th year, bravely trying to cheer her father's spirits as he faces death. With Malle's death, Candice focuses her energy on Chloe and slowly and painstakingly rebuilds her life. Years after Malles' death, Candice finds love again with a widowed Jewish architect. For the first time in her life, Candice is not the caretaker...Marshall takes care of her! There are a few chapters devoted to her travails of aging: weight gain, medical crises, her mother's final and tough years, and a few Botox and Restylane tales. Candace boldly claims that she "lives to eat" and she is not about to starve herself to maintain an impossible physique. She is still acting on TV and on Broadway and she is still a woman of extraordinary beauty, inside and out. What a joy to read this book and find out that one of my childhood icons is a gifted writer who expresses the tensions, challenges, joys, and heartbreaks of life...with humor and aplomb. Candice Bergen is an indomitable spirit, and a true American treasure.

While I like Candice Bergen and loved her first book, this one left me nonplussed. I wanted to love it, I did in parts, but overall the feeling I walked away with is that I'd just read the diary of an international socialite jotting down the elements of her fashionable life for a Style column. No question, Bergen is a good writer but, as she's mellowed with age, she seems to have turned into someone I don't recognize. I'm a few years younger and have watched her career since Carnal Knowledge. In "A Fine Romance," I was surprised by the name-dropping (even though she grew up with the royalty of Tinseltown and truly knows all these people), the personal shoppers, a somewhat Gallic disdain for the American proletariat, and several redundancies which should have been caught by an editor. (The "TV money" that made her rich is mentioned at least three times in the same way.) I finished the book, and it did seem to me, as others have said, that Bergen was racing to the finish line. The chapters begin to go by quickly and hold less substance as we reach the end. For me, this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as, forgive me, I was ready to put it down. I think women might better relate to this book than men. I know that's a generalization but, in parts, it seems to be written with an "I've been there girls; this is what you can expect" kind of tone. I will always like Candice Bergen. To me, she's an icon. Perhaps therein lies my consternation. Selfishly, I wanted her to fit the mold I invented for her all those years ago. I pictured her as the essence of Hollywood Cool, an earthy, humorous actress, perhaps one less concerned with the material aspects of life. However, having lived with a cool, critical father who left his money to a ventriloquist's dummy and not to her, I can't blame Bergen for worrying about the material aspects of life when it comes to her own daughter. If the men in her life seem to be on perpetual trial runs, it's clear Bergen has devoted her life, as well as this book, to her only child.

I loved Knock Wood and really looked forward to reading this book. I'm about done with it and feeling slightly disappointed. Of course, she has led a fabulous life and it's fun a get a glimpse. But the book feels frenetic - a recounting of locations (we were in New York, then LA, then Paris, Sun Valley, back to LA, etc. etc.) with little emotion. Clearly this is a passionate woman and I wish more of her passion had come through the pages. She generally let the full text of letters from family and friends fill that gap. Also, the book could have benefited from stronger editing. Ms. Bergen mentions how Murphy Brown was written on the assumption that the audience was of a certain intellect. This book should have followed that prescription - tighter and eliminating several obvious redundancies. At times it felt like I was reading a draft. Still, I enjoyed learning about what Ms. Bergen has been up to and that she has the love she so deserves.

And they own each others' hearts. The story begins at the wedding - a beautiful affair. However, once their honeymoon begins they realize they have a problem...they seem to be having issues getting completely physical.7 Years Bad Sex chronicles Alex and Casey's start to married life and their trials in intimacy. While neither believes in such things as curses, it's hard to deny that something wonky is going on. They try everything, and I do mean everything, to make it to the finish line. Luckily, they have a deep and abiding love because the lack of release keeps them both on the verge of blowing.Wells cleverly relates this tale of woe with with both humor and compassion. I admired their courage and their mutual respect. I also admired the love and deep bond between Alex and Casey and I was anxious for them to reverse the curse. They were fortunate to have supportive friends and to have met and made a few new ones. It eased their struggle. The lengths this couple had to go to would push some over the edge. Alex and Casey, though, they fought hard and so deserved their HEA.**I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.**

Yet, I'm a huge Nicky Wells fan and knew that the story would (had to!) work out in the end. This book is charming, funny and well, yes a bit stressful! Yet in the end, love wins out and it helps you keep your faith in the institution of marriage. I highly recommend this book!!

Fun story By CathyR Alex and Casey are celebrating their fairytale wedding on a yacht moored off San Tropez, in the company of their friends and family. They have no inkling of the traumatic weeks ahead. As they toast each other their attention and focus is drawn to a display in the sky. There’s a strange rumbling noise from the sea, like thunder, as they make the toast, eyes skyward, but only Casey and Alex seem to notice. Something very mysterious has happened and it seems to have an adverse effect on Alex and Casey’s love life. Actually they don’t, or rather can’t, continue that part of their relationship. Theirs is rapidly turning into a completely no sex marriage. They can’t understand what has happened because both of them desperately want to continue their previously healthy sex life. Then someone mentions a ‘seven years bad sex curse’ superstition. Surely not?Although the idea of a curse is quite bizarre, Casey and Alex’s problem persists on their return to home life. Despite desperately trying any and all ways, some making me wince, some unknowingly dangerous and others sweet and considerate, none of their efforts alleviate the problem. As each attempt fails and nothing seems to help, they become ever more distressed and disheartened as their pre marital happiness is whittled away bit by bit.Nicky Wells has turned what is actually a serious and sensitive subject matter into a light-hearted, humorous and very imaginative story. Having said that, emotions do run deep and I found myself rooting for Casey and Alex, who are having a really rough time which impacts on their lives and their marriage. They are fun characters though, and the supporting cast are likeable too, and do their best to help the couple get back on track. I particularly enjoyed James and Rodge.A neat concept, taking the seven years of bad luck superstition a step further.

One of the most popular and controversial novels of the Twentieth Century was Forever Amber. Kathleen Winsor's story of Restoration England follows the exploits of a beautiful girl named Amber St. Clare who bed-hops her way from country wench to mistress of the King of England. Forever Amber became a cause celebre for the "watchdogs of morality" who attempted to ban the book, which went on to sell millions of copies despite their efforts. When a film version of the novel was announced these same "watchdogs" turned their attention toward Hollywood. Although controversy might sell books and cinema tickets it can also damage reputations and prevent serious works of art from ever being taken seriously. Forever Amber: From Novel to Film hopes to shed a new light on the much maligned movie version of the best selling novel of the Forties and show how misguided censorship can ultimately damage artistic expression.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful look at a neglected epic By R. Gorey It's possible not too many modern moviegoers know about this sumptuous (but sadly forgotten) film. Gary Smith's book is a must for those who cherish the once-notorious novel (by Katherine Winsor) and the Otto Preminger film adapted from it. The movie's history is a sad and dramatic one, and Smith has done a creditable job of documenting it. There are several previously-unpublished pictures as well--many of them from the aborted Peggy Cummins/John Stahl version. Smith's account of the making of the movie draws on many sources, some firsthand, which give this book a lift, and it's interesting to see the contemporary reviews in a chapter toward the end: many critics found they were pleasantly surprised by the movie, after having been primed for something trashy and vulgar. Bear Manor Media's release is neat and clean, but might have benefited from being larger: the pictures are perhaps not reproduced with the gloss they might have in a deluxe coffee table volume. Wouldn't it be nice if Smith's work encourages someone to get behind the restoration of this elegant, beautifully photographed Technicolor film? It certainly deserves to be seen by a larger audience. Smith's restoration (through photos) of the Cummins version is a great reason for fans to buy this, though there are several other thorough chapters on the movie's journey "from book to film". A fine job, and for those of you who worship this film (and you know who you are) it's a nice addition to your film library. Recommended.

Through reading this book and learning about simple techniques like deep breathing, relaxation and yoga postures I have been better able to deal with the stress I experience on a daily basis. It gave me the space I needed to question myself and start looking at how I view specific stressors in my life, helping me to realize that just by changing the way I look at something can effect whether or not I allow that something to have control over me.Changing some little things in my daily routine has also helped. Taking back roads to work instead of fighting traffic has helped to alleviate the stress I feel in my morning commute and listening to music in my downtime (rather than being on the computer) has worked to refuel me when I get tired in the afternoons. I will continue to use this book as a resource and am confident that I will continue to find specific ways to better deal with stressful situations in the future.

Increasingly PTs are looking to yoga as a way to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce stress. This book is like an intersection of those two fields, going over both the physical and mental aspects of yoga therapy. Just as important, this book isn't just for people who want to use yoga in their lives, who might want to learn some of the poses, but also for teachers and PTs who want to teach it to patients. The book includes exercises and tips for training. Definitely recommended for this growing field of PT practice.

I am very stressed after having to make the decision to file for disability after my autoimmune disorder has taken its toll on my body. Such a change in life and lifestyle expectations have lead to stress and anxiety. My illness has left my body in discomfort and stiff. This is a whole body approach to your personal health whatever age and fitness level.
