Although nothing else in the issue directly pertains to Lucio Fulci, Troy Howarth kicks off MONSTER! #16 by singing said late director’s praises in his “Fulciriffic” guest editorial (elsewhere in the issue, Troy also contributes Pt. 1 of his two-part article entitled “My Favorite Lycanthropes”, covering his fave cinematic werewolves). Our feature reviews spotlight the unsung Mexi-monster classic AVENTURA AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA and Michael Mann’s elusive cult favorite THE KEEP, which has yet to surface on either Blu-ray or DVD. Reviewed elsewhere are MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT (2014), SHE DEVIL (1957), WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM (1985), DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973), ALIEN SIEGE (2005), EVIL IN THE WOODS (1986), THE SLIME PEOPLE (1963), BREEDERS (1986), THE BLACK HOLE (2006), as well as the obscure Indian horror shocker PYASI APSARA (1991). Not only does seasoned MONSTER! veteran Stephen R. Bissette cover a pair of obscure Mexican creature features, but he also pays further tribute to the recently deceased Ib “REPTILICUS” Melchior, as well as focusing on the influence of Mr. Melchior’s canon – in addition to numerous other pop-cultural influences – on Ridley Scott’s recent Hollywood blockbuster PROMETHEUS (2012), whose debts to psychotronic movies / SF pulp fiction and comics (etc.) are legion; even if most might well sail high over the heads of the “average” modern moviegoer. Elsewhere in M! 16, Bill Adcock gives us “No Way These Are Local Boys!”; an affectionate look back over the TREMORS series, complete with some fascinating hypotheses as to the real world zoological roots of the films’ earth-burrowing monsters, the Graboids. In the second installment of his entertaining regular column “From the Cheese Returned”, José Cruz covers two mummy movies from early in this the new millennium: namely BRAM STOKER’S THE MUMMY, starring Louis Gossett, Jr., and Russell Mulcahy’s TALE OF THE MUMMY, starring Jason Scott Lee. Other contributors to this issue were Mark Savage, Dawn Dabell, Eric Messina, Adam Parker-Edmondston, Dennis Capicik, Christos Mouroukis, Les Moore, Brian Harris, Steve Fenton, and Tim Paxton. As per usual, detailed information as to the video availability of the titles covered within the ’zine round out the contents, and it is jam-packed with illustrations throughout.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Want monsters? Get'em here! By Fred Adelman How Tim Paxton and his stable of knowledgeable writers keep turning out such and excellent zine every month is one of those great mysteries of life that you never question, in fear that it may end if you do. This is yet another excellent issue that contains reviews of monster movies from around the world. Steve Fenton starts it off (after a heartfelt guest editorial by Troy Howarth) with a review of the Mexican horror film AVENTURA AL CENTRO DE LA TIERRA (1964; which I went out and bought the DVD even though it is not English friendly) which, based on the photos and Steve's excellent review, seems like a must-see. Who cares if you don't understand Spanish? Stephen R. Bissette then follows-up with reviews of two more Mexican monster films, GIGANTES PLANETARIOS (1967) and LA ISLA DE LOS DINOSAURIOS (1967; I don't think we need a translator to know what that means!). Dawn Dabell then does an extensive review of THE KEEP (1983) and how Paramount edited the film out of director Michael Mann's hands and still hasn't released the film on DVD or Blu-Ray (I still enjoy the edited R-rated 96 minute version). What follows next are a slew of monster film reviews written by the likes of Brian Harris, Adam Parker-Edmonston, Mark Savage (his extensive review of THE SLIME PEOPLE - 1963 is a corker) and many others. Great stuff and undeniably enjoyable reading for those not familiar with some of the films reviewed (such as EVIL IN THE WOODS, WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM, BREEDERS and MONSTERS: THE DARK CONTINENT [sequel to one of my favorite independent 2010 films MONSTERS], and others). Tim does an extensive review of the Indian monster flick PYASI APSARA (1991) and then writers Dennis Capicik and Les Moore tell you everything you need to know about the 1957 horror film SHE DEVILS (a favorite TV staple of mine during the 70's). Writer Jared Cruz then writes about a duo of modern-day mummy films; BRAM STOKER'S THE MUMMY (1998) and RUSSELL MULCAHY'S TALE OF THE MUMMY (also 1998).Troy Howarth then regales us with his favorite werewolf films, starting with WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935) and then ending asking the question: Which is the best werewolf film of 1981: An AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON or THE HOWLING? He will sort out that dilemma in the next issue.Stephen R. Bissette then does two articles on the late Ib Melchoir. The first one deals with how the film PROMETHEUS would not exist without Melchoir and the second article is his continuing heartfelt tribute to Melchoir that began in Issue #15. Bill Adcock then reviews all the TREMOR films (they are all quite good). It all ends with the always-entertaining Movie Checklist, where Steve Fenton, Tim Paxton and Dennis Capicik mention where all of the films reviewed in this issue can be purchased and throw in little factoids of the films that weren't mentioned in the reviews. Once again, another way above average 105-page issue that should be on every monster fan's must-read list. A steal at $5.95. Seriously, it's a steal.

This is all the lowdown on all films monstrous from all over the world. Not only does it cover retrospects on and over views on a world wide scale, (what more could you want? Let me tell you! ) at the close of each article there is info on the availability of each film discussed and where to get it! The info is supplied by experts on each film, not just more opinion scribblers. I mean, really now! Wow!!! How great is that?

Excellent issue with articles on 'The Keep' Werewolf and Mummy movies By James C Girasa Monster! #16 (!Monstruo!) is an excellent issue with all kinds of good reviews. The Front Cover reviews a Mexican film of which I have never heard of. The back cover is a movie still from 'The Keep,' and all time favorite movie of mine that has yest to get a decent DVD release.'The Reviews' section reviews: Monsters: Dark Continent - an underated movie that is not very much like it's predecessor, 'Monsters,' (a great movie) but it is still a good movie that takes place in the same universe. It's just a very different movie and the monsters are secondary to the story.Wizards of the Lost KingdomDon't be Afraid of the DarkAlien SiegeBreedersThe Black Hole (not the Disney version, the 2006 version)Evil in the WoodsThe Slime PeoplePyasi ApsaraShe - Devil - You also get an additional article on the adaptions made of the short story 'The Adaptive Ultimate.'Next is an article on 'Mummy' movies followed by Part 1 of an article on 'Werewolf' movies.'Journey to the Melchior Planet' is a story about the making of 'Prometheus.''No Way These are Local Boys' is an article about the 'Tremors' movies.Part 2 of 'A Monster' Ode to IB!Lastly, the DVD movie checklistPretty much all of these 'Monster' issues are excellent sources of information for just about anybody.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Motivational Book By Joseph P. Muldowney Having written two books about running, I frequently enjoy reading other writers perspectives about our sport and its benefits.I recently read, Happiness Step By Step: The most practical how-to guide to more happiness in your everyday life, and...the most unusual easy running guide, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.Most of know that running is a positive addiction. In this book, the author explains the addictive nature of running, and lists reasons why we should embrace the addiction. The book begins by outlining what are the things in life that really make us happy. There are a lot of unhappy millionaires out there. Movie stars, professional athletes, and other high-profile individuals may have reached a level of success, but many are dreadfully unhappy. For the person who may need motivation to begin an exercise regimen, the author is a superb salesman. He offers many concrete reasons why it is time to get up from the sofa and get out for a run. And to make it easier for non-runners, he suggests an easy, regular workout schedule.Peace-of-mind, stress release, camaraderie, and physical wellness are all incentives for those who may be reluctant to become runners.Simply, the author has, in a short, concise manner, written a recipe book that links running with happiness. In a sense, he is a preacher and veteran runners are the choir. We all want more members of our running congregation, and this book is an excellent method of spreading our running gospel.Read this book and recommend it to your friends. It is free and packed with advice that all runners can benefit from.Joe Muldowney, author of the books, 'Running Shorts,' and 'Personal Best'

I've always been and am an enthusiastic exerciser, however, I didn't think jogging was my thing. In any case, Usual Oddman presents such a compelling argument in his book that I just had to try it and I'm glad I did. If you try it please stick to his "easy jogging" method. Just read the book and you'll understand why his method is geared to create a recharging of the mind and so far I have to agree. Prior to reading this book if I had tried jogging I probably would have turned it into a high intensity workout, this is not the author's purpose. Remember, it's about achieving a happy state of mind. Please read his book and test this out for yourself. I feel this will work for all ages. I'm almost fifty years old and loving it. Furthermore, I emailed the author with questions and he was quick to respond and so very kind.

Running Your Happiness Race By Cayce Hrivnak This author brings a different approach to achieving happiness that other authors haven't discussed about. Author Usual Oddman, explains the importance of jogging and running. Jogging can get your blood pumping, your body working, and your mind rolling through various things. By beginning a healthy lifestyle, it will leak into your day-to-day work.We receive a list of things that make us happy. Now, there are steps to achieving this. Start off slow, then pick up the pace in your race. Then you'll get faster and faster till it becomes the easiest thing to do in this life.Happiness doesn't come from money, it comes from the feeling of letting those emotions go through running.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. review what it IS not what you wanted it to be By gary Very much illustrated in a wonderful line-work, Art nouveau style (that you can clearly see in the sample pages). Beautiful full page and accent art and nice hardcover binding. I don't think some people understand how, and why, to review books.

Each page adds to this timeless classic with stunning artwork and drawings that makes this a truly special book you will treasure for many years, I might have read many more of Shakespeares works in school if they were as exquisitely presented as this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. You will be absorbed into the story By bernie This really is "The Tragical History of Hamlet Prince of Denmark" and not only the Prince but his family. Not only his family but his friends. Not only his friends but all though that came before him and is told to those that came after him.You can take time to scrutinize and pick apart many underlying themes or may of the phrases that now challenge Bible sayings in today's sound bites. But the real fun is in just reading the story and you will find that it is not as foreign as you may have thought.A quick synopsis is that Old Hamlet conquered Old Fortinbras seizing his land. Now that Old Hamlet is dead, Young Fortinbras wants his land back and is willing to take it by force. Meanwhile back in Dänemark Young Hamlet who is excessively grieving for the loss of his father, gets a now insight from his fathers ghost. Looks like he was a victim of a "murder most foul"; it looks like his mother and uncle were in cahoots on the murder. The story is about what each person felt and acted or did not act upon the situation. You will find many movies and perverted imitations of the story but nothing will replace the original scripts that were intended to be watched.

In this issue, the Honorable Michael Mukasey, former U.S. Attorney General, provides insight into timely national security topics such as the NSA, wiretapping, and the data-mining program known as PRISM; the Honorable Robert S. Litt, Second General Counsel of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, discusses how the legal framework under which the Director of National Intelligence conducts signals intelligence; Mr. Daniel Pines, Associate General Counsel, Office of General Counsel, Central Intelligence Agency, advocates for reinterpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment’s “Citizenship Clause” as it relates to providing U.S. citizenship to the children of foreign diplomats; and Professor William C. Bradford from the National Defense University and the National Defense College, explores relationships between American scholarship and Islamist extremism. This issue also contains two comments by Mason Law students: Lauren Doney analyzes Fourth Amendment expectations of privacy and the hotly-debated Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act in light of advancing technologies; and Rick Myers advocates for the adoption of a more flexible approach for service member confinement in both military and civilian facilities with regards to confinement in close proximity to foreign nationals.

We all love zombies but some of us are ruining them for the rest of us. For instance, zombies don't run. Ever. It's just wrong. They don't walk around with their arms stretched out in front of them, wrists dangling like cooked pasta. That's just stupid. I don't think they can walk along the ocean floor either. Wouldn't they float? If not, why does the mob on television always weigh bodies down with cement shoes? Seems like a lot of work they probably wouldn't want to do if it wasn't necessary. Also, wouldn't sharks eat them? Sharks eat everything. I have questions. Undead questions, and you may too. I will attempt to answer these questions and I will share with you my plan for surviving the zombie apocalypse. Where we should go, what we'll need and where to avoid. I don't want to give too much away here but it's an awesome plan. You're welcome.

THE SONNETS (Illustrated), by William Shakespeare

From the Back Cover

Without a doubt the most important of Shakespeare's nondramatic works, the sonnets have engendered reams of scholarly disputation as to the identity of "the dark lady" and the "lovely boy" to whom the vast majority are addressed. Controversy has also long simmered over the full name of the "W.H." of the dedication. What is not in dispute is the superior quality of these lyrics, which rank among the finest sonnets ever written—in any language.Overt 150 poems deal with love, friendship, the tyranny of time, beauty's evanescence in power, death, and other themes in language unsurpassed in power, precision, and beauty. Now this inexpensive Dover edition enables any lover of poetry or fine literature to have this exquisite verse in his or her personal library. A brief glossary illuminates a number of archaic terms.

From AudioFile The Complete Sonnets is a handy resource for lovers of these poems. Recorded in consecutive order, with each actor reading in shifts of one or two sonnets, this production really does let the poem, in this case, be the thing. There's not much introduction before each sonnet besides the announcement of the next number. While it's nice to hear different readers deliver the poems, the transitions are, on occasion, jarring; one just settles into the timbre of a voice only to have it suddenly altered. Overall, the collection is a great resource and would make an excellent gift for a Shakespeare fan. R.A.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Moore The Dover Thrift Edition of the Complete Sonnets is exactly that: the complete sonnets, and nothing more. Though often scorned by literary snobs, the entire Dover series does fulfill one very useful function: it provides cheap, easy-to-read, and widely-available versions of literary classics. What you get, in this case, are all of Shakespeare's sonnets (undisputably some of the greatest poems ever written and a true treasure of English literature; obviously, a review of any edition of these poems will inevitably focus not upon the work itself, which is beyond repute, but, rather, on the individual edition as presented) -- and nothing else. Much more expansive (and expensive) versions are available, featuring an introduction to the sonnets with background information, notes and annotations, a handy list of definitions for archaic and obscure Elizabethian words -- and, more than likely, at least one pretentious individual interpretation of the work. Obviously, if one is looking to study Shakespeare, really go in-depth into the sonnets for scholarly or academic purposes, then one should look into one of the editions just described. If you just want a copy of the sonnets without desiring to spend too much money, you don't need or don't want all of those extras, or you simply want to impress incredulous people by owning a set of Shakespeare's sonnets, however, then you could do worse than picking up this inexpensive little book.

Rather than reading the few anthologized works together with some handouts, students now own the entire set. For anyone not familiar with Shakespeare's 154 sonnets, this gives an affordable and portable version. For anyone familiar with the works, this book offers them in a beautifully light, compressed format that itself enhances rereading and re-interpretation. The book begins with a helpful one-page background on the sonnet form and on Shakespeare's collection, and ends with an also-helpful alphabetical list of first lines. The two-page glossary of terms at the end may be too little, too late, but the drawbacks of Dover's edition--its lack of notes and its use of roman numerals to number the poems--pale compared with the book's availability. As an enthusiast myself--someone who studied at the Shakespeare Institute, England, writing a 310-page thesis on the Bard--I feel grateful to be able to help others to such an inexpensive and pleasant way to own and explore Shakespeare's entire collection of sonnets. Because I could skim the poems in sequence so quickly and easily with this edition, the interrelationships among Sonnets 113, 114, 115, and the famous 116, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds," for example, struck me in a new way as I reread them in this little book. A highly- recommended edition.

Left me lost - till I got a better edition By Steve in Chicago My English major friends kept raving about the sonnets, so I finally decided to spend a buck to get this least expensive edition. It was kind of interesting. I could tell that Shakespeare was really intense about his issues - but I was lost as to why everybody was so crazy about them. I also did not like having paper that was so thin that my highlighting and notes went right through to ruin the other side of the page :(Finally I spent another buck to get an (almost as inexpensive) edition (used) - the Signet edition edited by Burto. That helped a lot - with definitions of terms and hints about lots of secret relationships possibly there for those who would dig further. At last I'm starting to figure out why this guy is considered so awesome. To really get an appreciation of Shake's heart and mind, beginners like me really need more than just the poems. Now I'm borrowing an English major's copy of Dr. Vendler's edition (Art of Shakespeare's Sonnets). It's pretty heady, so I'm just trying to read her introduction. Whew! I haven't tested out all her theories, but is so much incredible care and complexity going on behind the scenes in these poems - it's no wonder people are still boggled after 400 years.Truly amazing - but unless you're an English major I wouldn't recommend bothering with this doubtful dollar deed. Getting a copy of the Signet or Folger Library editions will make beginners much happier.

An entirely fictional account of a wannabe veterinarian in Scotland. The story is the result of late-night reads of James Herriott's All Creatures books, poor sleep and a semi-dream like state which lead the author to invent strange characters who he thought were funny at the time. It includes primitive drawings of the characters and some of the animals encountered. This book is meant to produce a few chuckles or downright guffaws, if possible.

And the primitive, but entertaining drawings are delightful. It's not great literature, but it is fun to discover a new writer with a different point of view.

Right, you know the rules, watch the low blows, if it's a knock-down no messing about, go straight to your corner, and don't come out till called for, are we clear? Touch gloves, let's go.In the red corner: Leon Davidson - Black British champ or Uncle Tom? In the blue corner: Troy Augustus - American powerhouse or naive cash cow? Having spent their youth in the same London boxing gym, vying for the favouritism of inspirational, foul-mouthed trainer Charlie Maggs, the two former friends step into the ring and face up to who they are. Boxing has dominated their lives with an unhoped-for structure and meaning, but it becomes clear that it is no substitute for their health, family, and friends. Roy Williams' Sucker Punch looks back on what it was like to be young and black in the 1980s and asks if the right battles have been fought, let alone won. With an introduction by Harry Derbyshire, Lecturer in English and Drama at the University of Greenwich.

I wanted to read more of these wonderful little stories. Ms. Define has an amazing gift for storytelling. I like to read for a bit before I go to sleep and these stories were the perfect end to a day, especially days that were frustrating or stressful to lighten things up and put the day in perspective. The stories cover a wide range from family life in small town Midwest to life in New York City and from mundane experiences to the unenviable experience of being in a bank when it was robbed! Every one of them is told with self-deprecating humor, wit that sometimes made me laugh out loud, and an unusually keen insight into what's important in life.

This book is a compilation of tales from different periods in Ms. DeFine's life as she interacts with her family, friends, and the world around her...all told through a filter of humor and with a keen eye for the ridiculousness of daily life. I laughed out loud as I read parts of this book. My only complaint is that it was too short...I wanted more. It is the author's first release. I hope there are many more to follow.

By Artie Van Why As a personal friend of Deb's, it's with great sadness that I have to share that Deb passed away this morning, February 18, 2016. But her life will live on through these wonderful "down home" type tales. Do yourself a favor and buy a book that will cause you to smile and make you a bit sad; knowing this will be Deb's only book.

Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. Forced to abandon the life he has built, he embarks on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out.

One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, this new adaptation by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy was presented at the National Theatre, London, in April 2015.

The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Wellness Planner: 365 Days of Healthy Living for Your Body, Mind, and Spirit, by Amanda L. Smith

Review "Some years ago, I worked with a young woman who had a hard time tracking her experience from day-to-day. She used the diary cards I gave her, but because of crisis-ridden life, she couldn't keep her diary cards together and it was hard to measure her progress week over week. She moved to trying to track her emotions and behaviors on her smartphone, but again having to scroll back and forth between the most recent week and what happened 16 weeks ago (for instance) was cumbersome. She loved to journal, so I suggested that she do that instead; however, even though this was a more productive way of monitoring, it had two drawbacks. The first was that there were days she would write an entire novel, and days that she would write a single sentence. I wished that there were a way for her to consistently be able to report on her journey to healing. She needed the benefit of a journal with all its pages in one tome, the utility of a diary card with easy prompts to focus her attention on specific target behaviors, and the practicality of a smartphone, keeping days in order without skipping tasks or days.Amanda Smith has done just that with The Dialectical Behavior Therapy® Wellness Planner: 365 Days of Healthy Living for Your Body, Mind, and Spirit. It is a practical tool for the emotionally sensitive person looking for an easier way to track your emotions and behavior as well as monitor progress over time. The day-to-dayness of the planner brings gentle structure that does not overwhelm with burdensome demands. At the same time, it makes the skills from dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) accessible for in-the-moment review as well allowing the user to continue to monitor their progress with self-assessment tools. This is a wonderful little planner. Individuals will find it to be an important and personal yardstick on their journey to recovery. I also imagine giving it to members of a DBT skills group as a graduation present as a practical gift and a memento, the utility of which will last a lifetime."Blaise Aguirre, M.D.Medical Director3East DBT-ContinuumMcLean HospitalAssistant Professor of PsychiatryHarvard Medical School"The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Wellness Planner is a must have. If you are looking for a practical resource that structures your management of treatment, progress, and emotion regulation, you have found it. Amanda Smith provides an excellent resource with information, guidance, referral information, and daily, weekly, and monthly assessment and accountability. This unique journal is a wonderful resource with practical application. I love the focus on cogent self-assessment, strengths and gratitude and progress on goals. What a wonderful tool for daily improved health and life success. Amanda Smith hit a home run with this journal."Helen Wilson Harris, EdD, LCSW, Associate Professor, Garland School of Social Work"Amanda Smith is living proof that DBT works. Used consistently, her Dialectical Behavior Therapy Wellness Planner will prove to be a valuable tool in saving your own life."Stacy Pershall, author of Loud in the House of Myself: Memoir of a Strange Girl"Amanda Smith has developed a way for people with emotional dysregulation to track their use of dialectical behavior therapy skills, and monitor their progress in a coherent, structured way. As a supplement to DBT and diary cards, the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Wellness Planner will assist a many with their therapeutic process and recovery."Michael Roy, LCSW, founder and executive director of Clearview Women’s Center for Borderline Personality Disorder"Amanda's DBT planner is a wonderful resource for those learning and practicing dialectical behavior therapy skills. I love how it reminds us each day to acknowledge the skills we are using as we build mastery. It also provides an opportunity to examine which skills we may be under and over utilizing so we can create some balance. It's colorful pages, organized layout, and gratitude sections will invite and encourage us to use it on a daily basis. This planner is replacing my diary cards!"Debbie Corso, Founder and Co-Facilitator at DBT Path, online classes for emotionally sensitive people"Like the author, I have benefited personally from DBT, and as a result, became intensively trained as a therapist. Personally and professionally, I feel that this planner can provide significant, meaningful insight for people who are healing through DBT. I really appreciate the ease with which users can review their challenges and successes over time. People may forget important moments, and the diary can be a useful reminder of how far someone has come and where they can continue to improve."Allie Boston, MSW"One of the most critical aspects of the recovery process is having a way to determine goals and monitor progress. Amanda Smith's clever book provides a framework for doing just that. First, the initial assessment shows areas for improvement. The weekly format allows for planning, tracking daily progress, and reviewing results. Then the monthly assessment helps to evaluate your progress and decide what to focus on next. This planner is a valuable road map to wellness and recovery."Carl Dunn, Mental health educator and moderator of BPDChat

An indispensable complement to any DBT program By timory I learned about this book by following Amanda's tumblr of all things, and was shocked to learn that she was a well-respected social worker, BPD researcher, specialist and therapist. After getting over being a bit starstruck, I looked into the book, and realized that it was exactly what I'd been looking for.As many DBT participants know, the book/binder/materials that we're given can be a little bit overwhelming and unwieldy. It's not often clear what worksheet to turn to, especially when we've already gone through all of the units and aren't following specific homework assignments anymore (or we are, but need additional help with specific issues that come up day to day. This planner offer a simple way to check in daily with all four skills, as well as short sections for gratitude, daily goals, and "today's shining moment." It generally takes no more than five minutes to fill out an entry for the day. For those struggling with addiction or who engage in destructive behavior, there is also a "days sober" counter for each day. I'm lucky enough not to struggle with addictions, so I often change what I'm counting in this space; for instance, if I'm going through a rough patch, I may write in this space "days since berating myself." If I'm in a good space but want to decrease a behavior that is somewhat unhealthy, I might say "days without caffeine." The planner is endlessly customizable! It's not a journal, and not meant to be a replacement for one. What's so great about it for me is that it is such a simple way for me to remind myself of DBT skills on a daily basis. If I'm not sure how I practiced, say, distress tolerance on a certain day, I can go look in my DBT materials for a refresher. There may also be days when I haven't practiced that skill, and that's okay too -- I can just leave that spot blank. At the beginning of each week, there is also a quick checklist for each day to allow you to check in with physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs. Since I'm not religious, I simply avoid questions relating to those aspects. Otherwise, it's a good reminder to check that you're getting balanced meals, enough sleep, practicing mindful breathing, etc. These are things that are often easy to forget between weekly DBT sessions, so I find that the planner keeps me grounded and accountable on a daily basis, without any pressure if I accidentally miss a day.At regular intervals, the planner includes a more thorough assessment to gauge improvement, allowing you to recalibrate your goals. I know that this is a planner that I will be buying again year after year as I improve my DBT skills and recover from BPD. I hope that new editions will come out that incorporate improvements, as well.It would definitely be helpful if Amazon provided an example of one of the daily planning worksheets.

You record your DBT skills used daily, list what you are thankful for, goals you worked towards, your shining moment of the day, etc. There are many different things to record about your day and keep track of your progress without it being overwhelming. I have had trouble keeping up with daily DBT workbooks, but this one is by far the most enjoyable to use and the easiest to work on on a daily basis. I will certainly be purchasing another once I am finished with this one!

A fantastic tool for anyone using -- or interested in -- DBT skills By GB DBT is a powerful, simple and wildly effective framework for dealing with not only borderline personality disorder, but also depression and other diagnoses. But -- and this is the tricky part -- effectively using DBT is a day by day (often minute by minute) thing, a series of actions, skills and attitudes that are reinforced through repetition. That daily reinforcement is precisely why this planner is so powerful.Prefaced by a self-assessment tool, the planner guides you through daily and monthly assessments. Far more than just keeping-on-track exercises, the structure of these assessments lets users see how they've grown and where they need to apply more focus. As a planner, there's not a lot of narrative in the heart of the book. But in the opening and closing sections, the language is supportive, helpful and (in terms of tools and resources listed) very authoritative. It's a marvelous book, and I recommend it highly.
