Following the much publicized Mark Kennedy case, the question of the necessity and proportionality of covert police operations has been widely debated. At the same time, the use of covert tactics is becoming more widespread and is a feature of routine as well as more serious cases. It is a fast changing area of law which is notoriously opaque and esoteric. This new edition of Covert Policing: Law and Practice provides clear, up to date guidance on this complex topic and is an essential resource for practitioners working on cases involving covert operations in the UK. This book provides a comprehensive review of the law governing covert policing activities. It sets out the framework within which covert policing operations should be planned and managed to enable practitioners working for either the defense or prosecution to critically consider the legality and propriety of evidence obtained in cases where covert policing resources have been deployed, including applications for Public Interest Immunity. The text places considerable emphasis on the need for a proper methodology of approach to the Regulation of Investigator Powers Act 2000 and other legislation affecting this area. It examines the statutory and procedural requirements relating to covert policing deployments, from the interception of communications and directed and intrusive surveillance resources, through to the use and conduct of covert human intelligence sources. It examines the oversight mechanisms that exist to protect those subjected to invasions of privacy without the proper criminal or civil processes and covers recent developments arising from the Protection of Freedoms Act, Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act, secret hearings, the Mark Kennedy case and revelations concerning mass interception. Written in a way that seeks to highlight the effect of the legislation and the principles emanating out of the case law, this book is an essential resource for practitioners engaged in cases where covert policing issues are likely to arise. It will also be of assistance to those working for the police and other public authorities authorized under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 to carry out surveillance and other covert activities.

A revealing study By Phillip Taylor MBE COVERT POLICING: THE LEGALITIES AND ILLEGALITIES OF OUR EMERGING SURVEILLANCE SOCIETY REVEALED IN THIS NEW EDITIONAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersThe title of this book refers to covert, in other words, undercover policing which inevitably encompasses the activities of the intelligence services, mainly MI5 and GCHQ.The subject matter of course is the legal framework in which these activities may be carried out. The resulting legal landscape with its in-built tensions, controversies and conundrums is nothing if not complex, as revealed in this book now in its second edition from the Oxford University Press and written by Simon McKay.Speaking of controversies, the book contains much discussion of -- and detailed examination of RIPA -- the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, a controversial piece of legislation, ‘anticipatory’ in its day – and in the words of some practitioners, “a disgrace”.RIPA has certainly engendered some strong opinions, often unfavourable, including the criticism that under the Act, powers of surveillance given to the state are too substantial.Via references to cases throughout, accompanied by incisive commentary, the book explains what these powers are and, for the most part, views with alarm, the emergence of what might become (or has become already) ‘the surveillance society.Discussed and examined both extensively and in illuminating detail, are issues or privacy, security, freedom of speech and human rights-based arguments. As the author Simon McKay reminds us, ‘undercover police operations… give rise to both practical, jurisprudential and philosophical questions’… all of which of course, should be more than a little concerning, not just for lawyers and academics, but for the public at large. How many, for instance, are not concerned by the newly acquired state powers to eavesdrop on every email transmitted.Obviously in McKay’s opinion, the state has gone too far. He quotes the fairly recent statement from the Foreign Secretary that if you are a citizen of the UK and you are not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to fear.‘It is difficult to avoid the resonance this has with the great writers of the past’, he adds, referring with alarm to the chillingly prophetic works of Kafka, Orwell and Conrad. You might say that the book reveals the time honoured tug of war between what the state wants kept secret and what defence lawyers, not to mention investigative journalists, for example, want to ferret out.Anyone doing further research within this area of law -- which has certainly become highly topical -- will appreciate the extensive tables contained in the book, of UK legislation, statutory instruments, European directives, international instruments and codes and guidance. Paragraphs are numbered throughout for easier navigation and there is a useful index at the back.If you are a practitioner embroiled in a case (or cases) in which covert policing is a key issue (or even a peripheral one) this is an important work of reference you really do need to acquire. The date of publication is cited as at 2015.

'The contributions in this collection comprehensively review key issues concerning the respective roles of national and EU courts in enforcing competition and state aid law, and the relationship between court and arbitration proceedings in those fields. This groundbreaking work provides a stimulating and up-to-date analysis of the EU's decentralized enforcement system and I strongly recommend it to both scholars and practitioners. It will assist them in promoting the proper application of competition law in that institutionally complex and multi-level environment.'- Judge José Luís da Cruz Vilaça, The Court of Justice of the European Union, Luxembourg

'This is a comprehensive compendium of perceptive and insightful articles by highly experienced lawyers, arbitrators and academics. The most important issues arising in connection with arbitration, litigation and EU competition law are explored from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The Commission's Antitrust Damages Directive and the movement toward collective actions and multiple jurisdictional enforcement are analyzed, as well as timely questions about evidence and judicial review. The legally and politically complex subject of state aids is brilliantly treated. Finally, issues arising when EU competition law comes before arbitrators are discussed in great depth by seasoned participants in international arbitration.'- Barry Hawk, Fordham University, US

With courts and arbitrators functioning daily as front line decision-makers applying EU competition law, this book reflects on a variety of issues related to the litigation and arbitration of cases in this field. It provides expert analysis from perspectives of substance, procedure, fundamental rights, as well as inter-institutional dialogue and coherence.

Featuring a range of scholarly contributions, the essays address topics including the 2014 EU 'Damages Directive', now in force and being implemented; the EU's tepid reception of the 'collective redress' concept; a range of issues concerning state aid law; the arbitrability of competition law issues, as well as many other matters related to arbitration in this context such as judicial review of arbitral awards from a competition law perspective, and the interplay between arbitral proceedings and competition agency investigations.

With its wide coverage, this book serves as a valuable resource for any reader working on EU competition law, whether for the purpose of teaching or studying the law, or of practicing in this field as a lawyer, public official, judge or arbitrator.

Ideal By Phillip Taylor MBE IDEAL FOR PRACTITIONERS, ACADEMICS AND RESEARCHERS INVOLVED IN EU COMPETITION LAWAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersThis wide-ranging yet thorough and detailed examination of the many and manifold aspects of European Union (EU) competition law pivots basically around linkages and the interactions between the courts of the EU and national courts of the individual Member States. As the editors, Mel Marquis and Roberto Cisotta, have explained, the book has two core objectives: first to survey a range of issues that arise where competition law cases are litigated; secondly, to explore areas where apparently published research has been scarce or incomplete, particularly in the area of the application of EU competition law by arbitrators following what is termed the ‘modernization’ of the enforcement of EU competition law via a decentralised – and ostensibly ‘democratised’ enforcement system. In certain member states, including the UK, Germany and the Netherlands -- and also Belgium and Spain ‘it is difficult to deny’ say the editors ‘that Europe has been warming up to private litigation… as a means of resolving disputes.’Published recently by Edward Elgar, this is obviously a book for comparative lawyers in general and competition lawyers in particular. It certainly goes a long way toward filling certain yawning gaps in the knowledge of practitioners concerning the complexities of this area of EU law.Following a conference on these matters in Rome in 2013, the book is a compilation of fourteen learned articles and essays from distinguished contributors, mainly lawyers, academics and experienced arbitrators. Each shares the benefits of copious and carefully footnoted research in this field, ‘so you don’t have to’ so to speak.Speaking of arbitrators, the book cites the growing importance of arbitration in the field of competition law which is discussed in detail in Part III, the final section of the text. Private antitrust enforcement is dealt with in Part I.In Part II there is a detailed exploration of litigating antitrust and state aid issues before the courts of the EU and the courts of the member states, with both theoretical and practical viewpoints being touched upon throughout, on such matters, for example, as evidence, judicial review, the damages directive and of course, much more.It is tempting here to reach the optimistic conclusion that these phenomena indicate a positive trend by the EU courts to share, or devolve decision-making powers to the courts of the relevant EU member states. For the sake of European unity, long may this trend continue!Academics and practitioners, judges and arbitrators alike, will find this compendium of scholarly research an invaluable addition to the existing research materials currently available on the often vexed issues, past and present that have emerged in the field of EU competition law.The publication date is cited as at 2015.

The rapid growth in investment treaties has led to a burgeoning number of international arbitration decisions that have applied and interpreted treaty provisions in disputes between investors and states concerning their respective rights. This flurry of treaties and arbitral decisions has seen the creation of a new branch of international law- the law of investment claims. In this revised edition, Jeswald Salacuse examines the law of international investmenttreaties, specifically in relation to its origins, structure, content, and effect, as well as their impact on international investors and investments, and the governments that are parties to them. Investment treaty law is a rapidly evolving field and since publication of the first edition, the law of international investment treaties has both experienced considerable growth and generated extensive controversy. 2011 saw the highest number of new treaty-based arbitration filed under international investment agreements to date, and in July 2014, the Yukos Universal Limited (Isle of Man) v The Russian Federation culminated with awards of over US$50 billion; a historic record for anyarbitration. Controversy in this field has primarily revolved around the investor-state dispute settlement process, which as thus far involved at least 98 states as respondents. Salacuse captures these developments in this updated edition, examining not only the significant growth in treaties, but the trendsthat have followed, and their effect on the content and evolution of the law of investment treaties. Specific topics include conditions for the entry of foreign investment and general standards of treatment of foreign investments; monetary transfers; operational conditions; protection against expropriation; dispossession and compensation for losses; dispute settlement, including negotiation, arbitration, and conciliation; and judicial proceedings.

A fast expanding area By Phillip Taylor MBE FOR INTERNATIONAL LAWYERS SPECIALISING INA NEW BRANCH OF INTERNATIONAL LAWAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersNow here’s a relatively new and fast expanding area of the law – and here’s a book that will be of special interest to international lawyers, particularly those who deal with investment treaties, or are contemplating doing so. As a result of the relatively recent increase in such treaties and arbitral decisions, ‘the law of investment treaties’ has come to be recognized as a new branch of international law:The author, Jeswald A. Salacuse, Professor of Law at Tufts University in Massachusetts – and Diplomacy at Tufts University -- mentions that approximately 3,300 investment treaties have been created since the end of World War II, with new agreements emerging almost monthly from diplomatic negotiations -- clearly a phenomenon resulting from increasing globalization and the consequent globalization of business.Published by the Oxford University Press as part of the Oxford International Law Library, the new second edition of this highly regarded work examines every conceivable aspect of investment treaties. Fundamentally, however, the investment treaty does two things. First, it grants special protective rights to foreign investors. Secondly, it allows investors to enforce those rights, usually by international arbitration. The main motivation behind the investment treaty is that investors and their home countries wish to protect themselves from political risk. The author also makes the point that the applicable investment law is founded on treaties. This means that the distinct features of the investment treaty differentiate it from ‘the customary international law of investment.’Investment treaties have been transformative in that, as is discussed in this book, they have emerged as the fundamental tool by which two countries will create a treaty which sets down rules governing investments by their respective nationals in each other’s countries. NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement is an example. In the words of the author, the book aims to ‘examine investment treaties of all varieties in a comprehensive and integrated fashion.’ It therefore embarks on a close examination and analysis of the law of international investment treaties, specifically in relation to their origins, structure, content, and effect, as well as their impact on international investors and investments, and on governments that are parties to them. The numerous topics examined range from general standards of treatment of foreign investments, to monetary transfers; protection against expropriation; dispossession and compensation for losses; the various forms of dispute settlement -- and of course, much more, including a new chapter on the consequences of treaty violations and the determination of damages in investor-state disputes. With its extensive footnoting, detailed table of contents, index, tables of cases and conventions, treaties and agreements, this book excels as a valuable source of reference for researchers, academics, government officials, arbitrators and diplomats, as well as international lawyers. In fact, anyone even remotely involved in this area of law should acquire a copy. The publication date is cited as at 2015.

The Girl with the Green Eyes, by Clyde Fitch

About the Author Born William Clyde Fitch at Elmira, New York, he wrote over 60 plays, 36 of them original, which varied from social comedies and farces to melodrama and historical dramas. As the only child to live to adulthood, his father, Captain William G. Fitch, a graduate of West Point and a Union officer in the Civil War, encouraged him to become an architect or to engage in a career of business, but his mother, Alice Clark, in whose eyes he could do no wrong, always believed in his talent. She would hire the architectural firm of Hunt & Hunt to design the sarcophagus set inside an open Tuscan temple for his final resting place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New York. Fitch graduated from Amherst College in 1886, where he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity. He was the first American playwright to publish his plays. His first work of note was Beau Brummell (1890), a major work set in the English Regency which became a showcase for actor Richard Mansfield (1857–1907), who would play the title role for the rest of his life. His 1892 play Masked Ball (an adaption from Alexandre Bisson's Le Veglione) would be the first time that Charles Frohman put Maude Adams opposite John Drew Jr. which led to many future successes. In 1900, Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines, made a star of Ethel Barrymore. He is remembered particularly for his works such as Nathan Hale (1898), The Climbers (1901), The Girl with the Green Eyes (which ran 108 performances at the Savoy Theatre in 1902, and starred Robert Drouet as John Austin), The Woman In the Case, (which also starred Drouet and ran 89 performances at the Herald Square Theatre in 1905),The Truth (1907) and The City (1909). His works were popular on both sides of the Atlantic. His play based on the heroine of John Greenleaf Whittier's poem Barbara Frietchie met with mixed reviews in 1899 because of the romance he added to the tale, but it would be successfully revived a number of times. In 1896 he wrote the lyrics to a popular song Love Makes The World Go 'Round, with the arrangement by William Furst.

Jinny Tillman marries the stoic (and quite eligible) Mr. Jack Austin. Being deliriously happy she takes each bridesmaid aside and gives her honest opinion how each needs to change to find a husband, thus enabling each to capture this brand of happiness. One bridesmaid is decidedly sad and Jinny feels she is unsatisfactorily in love. This guess at her reception starts the play on it's green eyed journey. This play was fun to read and I could see it easily being produced today with just a little updating. The more I think of it, the more I would like to see this on the movie screen. Would make a good romcom with the right stars attached. Recommend for a quick, light read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very dated By edel m shine Plays of today have moved far away from this playwright's style. Although, popular in the early 1900's it would be difficult to get an audience to accept and enjoy this play today. It is very dated - with issues of men and women that are certain to be solved very differently today. Upbeat and light, and perhaps good for someone who is looking for a play from that era.

'Above the glazed roof the wall rises towards the sky,' writes Zola, 'black and coarsely rendered, as if covered with leprous sores and zigzagged with scars.'A small household is described. We have Camille, a sickly, mothered, placid boy. As he becomes older, his mother's protective nature remains as strong as it was when he was a child. He is plied with medicines and 'adoring devotion', such that 'His growth had been stunted, so that he remained small and sickly looking; the movement of his skinny limbs were slow and tired.' Camille is presented as a wholly unattractive young man, with his ignorance 'just one more weakness in him.'And then we have Therese Raquin. She was given to Camille's mother by his uncle when she was two, and has remained in Madame Raquin's household ever since. Therese has suffered the medicinal ministrations of Camille's mother, and because of this, has developed a quiet, introspective, intense demeanour. 'she developed a habit of speaking in an undertone, walking about the house without making any noise, and sitting silent and motionless on a chair with a vacant look in her eyes.'This is an unhappy household. Or, perhaps, because everyone is so concerned with repressing any spark of feeling or emotion, it is a dead house that just happens to still be living. Camille is too ignorant and sick to have a personality beyond the studied egotism of a man who has grown up with a dominating, too-concerned mother, while Therese is a blank piece of paper, purposely unwritten upon. When her twenty-first birthday arrives, Madame Raquin informs Therese that she is to marry Camille. Therese accepts the decision, with all that changes of her life being she sleeps in Camille's bed and not her own. All else remains the same. But soon an idea enters into Camille's head. He has always wanted to work in an office, the idea makes him 'pink with pleasure'. Against his mother's wishes, they move to Paris, where he finds a job working for the railway. Very quickly, life settles for everyone and time, as it does, plods along.Thursday evenings become a social occasion for the family. Camille invites a colleague from work and his mother, a retired policeman she knew in Vernon, for a weekly game of dominoes. A few others arrive, and another routine is added to that of the Raquin's. Here, Zola is quite clear in his disdain for the evenings, 'After each game the players would argue for two or three minutes, then the dismal silence would descend again, interrupted only by more clicking.'We are still near the very beginning of the novel. What Zola is doing now is to put all of the pieces into place - much like a game of dominoes - before adding the final character. A well-developed sense of drudgery, boredom and inevitability lies heavily across the text. We can quite comfortably imagine these characters continuing their lives in much the same manner until they are dead, and happily at that. What we do not want is for their life to become our own.One day, Camille bumps into an old friend, Laurent. Camille invites his friend to Thursday's festivities, an invitation Laurent readily accepts. When Therese lays eyes upon Laurent, she is floored. He seems, when compared to the colourless Camille, a real man, red-blooded and active. He has passions - he wishes to be a painter. He has emotions - he hates his father. He has desires - he speaks openly of painting naked women, and admiring their curves.Over time, Laurent and Therese develop a clandestine relationship, meeting and making love under the nose of Camille and Madame Raquin, coming together in Therese' bed. Her husband and mother-in-law are shown to be so docile and unsuspecting that we can fully believe Therese capable of getting away with such activities, in their home. From what we have read so far, Zola has written a reasonably commonly themed novel. We have the wife who is unappreciated and dreams of a love worthy of her lust; we have the inconsiderate, uncaring husband; we have the oblivious, hyper-affectionate mother. It would be easy to assume that Zola is spinning a fable such that finding and keeping love is more important than remaining within the shackles of a loveless marriage. But hold on. Zola is far more clever than that. The passion Laurent and Therese share is shown as animalistic and obsessive; theirs is not the pure, passionate love we might expect. Therese declares, 'I love you, I have done since the day Camille first pushed you into the shop. You may not respect me, because I gave myself to you all at once, everything...Truly, I don't know how it happened. I am proud, I'm impetuous too, and I felt like hitting you that first day, when you kissed me and threw me to the floor here in this bedroom...'. But Laurent, too, is equally afflicted with lust, '...the regular satisfaction of his desires had given him sharp, imperative new appetites. He no longer felt the least unease when embracing his mistress, but sought her embrace with the obstinacy of a starving animal.'. Both Lauren and Therese show the negative aspects of secret, furtive lust - they are not in love, they are animals, tethered to one another with chains of desire and deceit. It becomes clear that Camille must die for their relationship to progress beyond mere lust and into the love that they feel they deserve. He is dispatched with relative haste, and the novel proper begins.Guilt, remorse and obsession form the remainder of the piece. Zola is clinical in his dissection of his character's psyche. It is as though he has laid out their mind on an operating table, and carefully removes a slice of personality for the purpose of analysis and understanding. No thought, no desire, no regret is left untouched. It is perhaps predictable that they would suffer from guilt following the murder of a man who, while timid and boring, was ultimately good, but Zola makes the focus of the novel something much greater than mere regret. He does not question or lay judgement, rather he presents the thoughts and feelings of these two people as they descend through the psychological depths of what they have done. The novel is unrelentingly bleak. Chapter after chapter, the characters suffer their hearts and mind being torn apart. Zola slips the word 'insanity' into the text a few times, and we know he is giving us a clear clue. What would happen if two normal people commit an abnormal, horrible act? Zola pushes the limit of our understanding as far as he is able. The peripheral characters exist to further the darkness of Laurent and Therese. It is quite clear that their function is to serve the primary characters, and not to exist as people in their own right. Perhaps with a lesser author this would be a problem, but because Zola possesses such psychological acuteness, we allow it. The Thursday night domino games continue, purely because the unending stretch of sameness is precisely what is tearing the lovers apart. They becomes married so that Zola can show us that when the price for our desire is too great, we no longer wish to possess it. And so on, and so on. They fall in and out of debauchery, violence, hatred, remorse and guilt, all so that Zola can analyse the workings of two minds that were once normal, but have become diseased.Moving away from the psychological aspects of the novel for a moment, it is worth mentioning that Zola also has a tremendous gift for description and mood. Throughout the nineteenth century, Paris boasted a morgue, which was open to the public for inspection. On rows of gray slabs lay the bodies of the recently deceased, with a wall of clear glass separating the living and the dead. There was no such thing as refrigeration at the time, so as the days progressed, the bodies would putrefy and rot as they waited to be identified. Laurent, at an early stage of his guilt, visits the morgue daily, waiting to see Camille's drowned corpse. And when he does, Zola provides us with this breathtaking description, 'Camille was a revolting sight. He had been in the way for a fortnight. His face still looked firm and stiff; his features had been preserved, only the skin had taken on a yellowish, muddy hue. The head, thin, bony, and slightly puffy, was grimacing; it was at a slight angle, the hair was plastered against the temples, and the eyelids were up, revealing the globular whites of the eyes; the lips were twisted down at one corner in a horrible sneer; the blackish tip of the tongue was poking out between the white teeth.' And on it continues. Macabre? Certainly. But Zola's eye for description makes this a powerful scene.Therese Raquin is a short novel. There is no space for side plots, or avenues of digression. According to Zola, 'I simply carried out on two living bodies the same examination that surgeons perform on corpses.' What we have is an exploration of the darker parts of our psyche in brevity, a bleak early masterpiece.

I couldn't put it down, I had to find out what was going to happen next. It was destined to be a classic. The story is about a young woman named Therese Raquin, who is unhappily married to her sickly, weak cousin Camille. As a child Therese was adopted by Madam Raquin. Camille was her sick son, who she kept close watch over and spoiled with home-made medicines and warm blankets. Camille was always fond of Therese and insisted that she take the medicne before he did (Even though she was never sick). Madam Raquin decided to arrange for the two to one day marry because she feared that there would be no one to take care of Camille once she was gone. Therese and Camille wed once they were 21. Madam Raquin owned a shop that Therese helped her run, and Camille insisted on taking a job as a clerk because he was bored with staying at home. One day Camille ran into his old friend from childhood, Laurent. Laurent is a strong, handsom man, unlike Camille who is small, puny, and and ugly. Therese is immediatley infatuated with Laurent and soon falls in love with him. Laurent is a lazy ladiesman who has landed a job as a clerk at the same company as Camille after failing as an artist. Laurent finds Therese to be ugly and boring because of her constant silence, but he yearns for the company of a woman and sees Therese as an easy woman for him to seduce. He decides to become her lover right under Camille's nose. Madam Raquin considers Laurent a son, Camille considers him a brother, and Therese is crazy about him, so he has no problems arranging meetings for he and Therese to spend a few hours together. Laurent becomes amazed by Therese's lively spirit and activity in the bedroom and quickly falls under her spell. Crazy in love with one another, Therese and Laurent murder Camille in order to be together. For more than two years after Camille's murder, They avoid any intimacy with one another in order to not look suspicious. For those two years They are haunted by the memories of that terrible night and seem to be haunted by Camille himself. Convinced that once they are together again the hauntings will stop, Therese makes herself ill. Madam Raquin, still heartbroken over her son's death, becomes concerned. She believes that Therese's illness is cause by her sadness over Camille. She becomes convinced that Therese needs a man and arranges for her to marry Laurent. Finally, Laurent and Therese are together, but the haunting of Camille only gets worse. For many nights the couple is unable to sleep and are unable to go near each other. Their frustration turns into hate and they begin to abuse one another and blame one other for Camille's death. All the while Madam Raquin falls ill and becomes an invaid, unable to speak or move. Therese and Laurent decide to take care of her because having her in the house means they do not have to be alone with one another. Madam Raquin becomes a witness to the horrible abuse that Laurent and Therese do to one another. They accidentally let their secret slip in front of her while having one of their daily fights. Unable to speak or move to tell anyone, she refuses to let herself die until she sees Therese and Laurent pay for what they did. This story is one worth reading. The tragic story of two people in love, turned against one another in the middle of a plot to be together. Its a true classic and a must read.

Comprised of characters of freakish nature (sicky pale, childish, pasty face husband, the kind but naive doting mother, the cruel and good for nothing handsome lover, the plain, boring ugly uninspiring neighbours and of course the dangerously oppressed Therese herself)and their gray depressing surroundings, Zola describes the realistic scene of the poor in France. In the story, a young woman who has to endure a socially/mentally deprived environment in her husband and mother in law's house begins an affair with her husband's childhood friend. Frustrated at their slim chance of a better future, both decide to kill Therese's husband to pursue their happiness together. But is the poor man really dead? Or isn't he..... Ironic, full of suspense, shocking psychology and ugly side of human psychics, Zola has managed to link each of complex human emotion with psychological terror into his tale. If you think this is another simple tale of adultery, you're definitely missing out a lot. Treat yourself to a night of terror and give this a chance!

In the UK, fatal accidents present lawyers with a set of problems distinct from those of non-fatal personal injury claims. In particular, who does the law categorize as a dependant and how is the claim for dependency calculated? Now in its third edition, the APIL Guide to Fatal Accidents provides practical advice on how to run a UK case involving a fatal accident and how to secure maximum awards for the family, friends, and estate of the deceased. The book has been extensively revised and updated as follows: a new chapter on pre-action conduct * a new chapter on damages in anticipation of death * Ogden 7 * a new section on fatal accidents and same sex relationships * a revised chapter on Coroners Inquests following the implementation of the UK's Coroners (Investigations) Regulations 2013 and the Coroners (Inquests) Rules 2013. Practical materials, such as client questionnaires, draft pleadings, and schedules of damages complement the text. In addition, the relevant statutory materials and the seventh edition of the Ogden Tables are reproduced for ease of reference. [Subject: Personal Injury Law]

They come up trumps again By Phillip Taylor MBE APIL AND EXALL COME UP TRUMPS AGAIN DEALING WITH A MOST DIFFICULT AND SENSITIVE AREA OF PI: FATAL ACCIDENTSAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersPractitioners know that the matter of any type of fatal accident presents a set of ‘hard law’ problems distinct from those covered in non-fatal personal injury litigation. The most important questions are: who does the law categorize as a person who is described as a “dependant”; and how does the advocate calculate the claim for dependency?Answers to these and other questions are what this splendid book is all about. This APIL Guide to Fatal Accidents by Gordon Exall, now available in a welcome third edition, provides first class practical advice on how to manage a claim involving a fatal accident and how to secure maximum awards for all those involved, namely the family and the friends and estate of the deceased. For practitioners, this sensitive area of law requires particular deft skills to manage successfully and we would all be very much the poorer without the book and the APIL series in general for personal injury cases.Exall’s third edition has been extensively revised and updated to cover the following important main topics for those new to the APIL books and the subject-matter: a new chapter on pre-action conduct; a new chapter on damages in anticipation of death; the current Ogden tables (number 7); and a new section on fatal accidents and same sex relationships which will be particularly helpful for the practitioner and adviser. Finally we have a revised and most important chapter on Coroners Inquests following the implementation of the Coroners (Investigations) Regulations 2013 and the Coroners (Inquests) Rules 2013.To be expected, there are useful practical materials such as client questionnaires, draft pleadings and schedules of damages which complement Exall’s new text. And in addition the relevant statutory materials and the 7th edition of the Ogden Tables are reproduced for ease of reference which does make our task easier when time is short and the client is pressing for answers. In fact, this statement on how to deal with fatal accident matters gives you as the professional adviser all the short answers you need very quickly. Thank you, Gordon, and the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers for your specialist expertise! The law is stated as at 2015.

Meet Beth and Doug: two people who have no problem getting dates with their partners of choice.

What they do have, however, is a very awkward encounter after spending one hot night together following a drunken wedding reception they attend. They wake up to a blurry morning where the rules of attraction, sex and society are waiting for them before their first cup of coffee, leading them to ponder how much they really know about each other and how much they really care about what other people think.

Slyly profound and irresistibly passionate, The Way We Get By is Neil LaBute's audacious tale of a very modern romance―a sharp, sexy, fresh look at love and lust and the whole damn thing.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. LaBute Just Barely 'Gets By' By J I like Neil LaBute. Really, I do. While he's always been a bit overrated and has had to fight his tendency to be ‘shocking’ for shock’s sake, over the years he’s given us some great dialogue and more than his fair share of interesting stories. At this point his gifts can’t be denied.Perhaps its because LaBute has been so prolific over the years that ‘The Way We Get By’ is yet another slight work which continues his overall slow descent into sub-par material (He seemed to be at the peak of his abilities circa 2001-2005).'The Way We Get By' concerns two young twenty or thirty-somethings, Doug and Beth. We meet them as they emerge from a bedroom having shared a nightlong sexual encounter. As the two begin to navigate the tripwires of their morning after, we find that they have a shared history, and hearts full of feelings. In the preface to the play, LaBute states that he set out to write a “flat-out romance and one that ends realistically but happily”. Couple that with the fact that he’s dedicated the play to “Those who love, regardless” and we can, more or less, see his intentions clearly. While I suppose LaBute has met his goal of crafting a ‘flat-out’ romance, that doesn’t necessarily mean he has done so in an interesting way. While LaBute’s realistic and engrossing dialogue is fully intact here, everything about the play just seems as if LaBute is coasting. There’s no spark to the piece, it never feels as if its actually alive. I’m sure talented actors could easily improve upon it and make it come to a degree of life onstage (after all, plays are written to be performed), but the piece just doesn’t sustain itself. It simply takes too long to unfurl and yet once it does and its points have long been made, it continues to go on…and on. Also, this being LaBute territory, Doug and Beth’s sexual relationship involves a certain complication that some may see as ‘shocking’ but that all should instead simply see as ‘unnecessary’.While LaBute is undeniably a talented playwright, let’s hope that he can find the fire in his gut again.

By John Calvert It seems that I have spent my adult life reading books on how to write fiction with the goal that something would click and that I would "get it" and that the mysteries of how to tell a good story would be revealed. It wasn't until I read Discovering the Soul of Your Story that I ultimately acquired the tools that I had been looking for. I got it.In his own words, Roger Rueff says that he wrote "this book to reveal the details of a set of story creation and development techniques I have invented." He developed these techniques "to satisfy my need to understand storytelling on a deeper level. I did not want soft advice; I wanted hard advice - advice that I could reach for confidently to generate new stories from scratch, guide their development, and fix any problems that might arise along the way." In my opinion, he has succeeded where so many others have failed. I have now succeeded where I have failed in the past.I would recommend that a reader buy the second edition of this book. Mr. Rueff improved the terminology in the second edition and the new terms make understanding his concepts so much easier.Understanding his approach is like learning a new language. If you stick with it, the rewards will be worth the effort.

She was so enthusiastic about the book and the author's related courses that I had to check it out. I'm glad I did.Through the book, Roger lays out a series of development techniques that helped me to understand concepts that were always fuzzy to me before. His "grok" approach showed me very clearly where I was previously failing when I started with "what does my character want?" The grok approach is clearer, more precise, and leads to a better story. It helped me to find and understand my main character.Through the rest of the book, he ties the grok approach with two other techniques — thematic imprinting and meta-adaptation. These techniques made clear the storytelling process, where so many other books have fallen short, at least for me.Discovering the Soul of Your Story is a book I plan to re-read again and again. It defines a clear and simple approach that is helping me become a better writer.

I will update the review as my experiment fails/or succeeds. I like how Blake’s main perspective is from a man’s point of view. He asks what do men like and care about and how can we use that to persuade them to join us for #Outlander on Starz. It seems that Mary has used some of these ‘reasons’ on Blake before he knew it and before he started watching and enjoying Outlander himself. ;-)My favorite chapter was Ch 4 – ‘Don’t Reference the Books UNLESS Asked.” It talks about how just because we are book readers it is not actually helpful being all knowing and making men (or other non-book readers) feel as less for not agreeing why certain things should have been ‘different’ in the show. There is no prerequisite to read the books in order to watch and enjoy the show (I actually watched Part 1 before I read any of the books, therefore I strongly agree that you can enjoy the show as a non-book reader, although now I enjoy it even more as a book reader ;-).I also thought that Chapter 10 – “Tell Him to Read this Letter”, which pretty much summarizes all the reasons into a concise conversation piece that we could use to breach the subject of watching Outlander with our significant other, was very helpful.Suggestion #1: I would love to see an update to the ebook with Ch 11 – touching on the finale and how to prepare our significant others for it, as it is a different beast altogether and not exactly a stroll in the park. In my humble opinion, I think we definitely have to prepare our significant others before they watch it…otherwise after all the hard work for the first 15 episodes, E16 might cause our partners to decide not to join us for S2.Fun Suggestion #2: I think this would be a fun Book as an audiobook, especially considering the books relaxed tone and Blake’s experience podcasting.AkaAki157@AkiAga

Something has to pull us in. outlander is a fantastic read and has been adapted for TV. If men do not want to watch too bad.The reason for the 4 rating is I would have liked you to proof your book better.Otherwise not bad.

It's so honest in sharing the points that will appeal to the male mindset, while being open and forthright about Blake's own preferences. And Blake's real authentic voice comes through loud and clear. I have loved their podcast (OutlanderCast) since Day 1 and Blake is fearless in sharing his opinions, no matter how he knows they will be received. ( 'Team Frank', indeed!). Whether you are already a Mary-and-Blake fan or not, you'll get a kick out of this book. I highly recommend it.'

I have even enjoyed reading them. That being said, I don't think that either one of us really knew much about the history of Minecraft or how this whole thing started. What a fascinating story by Herobrine Books and so worth the read to give a new perspective on this game and the entire Minecraft universe. We both enjoyed this one so much and came away with a new appreciation for the game and all of its elements.

Donkey Poker teaches you how to crush the low-stakes live no-limit hold'em games you will find in Las Vegas. These "Donkey Games" play much differently than high-stakes live games or even low-stakes online games, so the optimal strategies are often much different. Donkey Games are filled with players who make the same mistakes over and over again and who are very exploitable. Donkey Poker teaches a small-ball brand of exploitive and low-variance poker. It teaches you what to do and why you should do it.

I highly recommend this new book by Steve Selbrede for all experienced low stakes players looking to finally turn a profit at their local casino. It's the most applicable and directly on-point poker book I've ever read (and I've read plenty) about beating the most popular form of no limit, the $1-2 and $1-3 live games.

Schoonmaker, Ph.D. I wholeheartedly agree with his basic premise: Donkey Games are fundamentally different from solid ones and require very different strategies. For example, he states that you can repeatedly limp with small pairs and suited connectors without being exploited because “in Donkey Games… few players will know what you’re doing. And some that do notice will not exploit you if they must play outside their comfort zone.” (p. 5)Since I’m a psychologist, I was delighted that he started discussing poker psychology on page 8 and continued to discuss it for the entire book.Since my math is considerably weaker than I’d like, I particularly appreciated his discussion of poker math. Even better, he explains that math simply.Unlike most poker books – including mine – he reports an immense amount of data to support his conclusions. I have never read a poker strategy book that reports and analyses so much data.He gives many examples of good and bad play, and his explanations are data-driven. That is, he uses the data to explain why plays are good or bad. It’s not an easy book to read, but no sensible player thinks it’s easy to win at poker. If you’re willing to work, this book can greatly improve your results.

By Amazon Customer This book provides a very detailed and helpful strategy for playing low stakes poker against most players. The author does an excellent job of grouping starting hands and providing statistics to support them. The groupings make it easier for a less skilled player like myself to pick a decent starting hand range based on position. This would be a five star rating from most readers but I had trouble keeping track of the letters he used as shortcuts such as SEQ and VPIP. I am waiting for Volume 2.
