1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. lots of great tips here By keepergirl73 I see it every day. At least one person in my area is either walking for exercise or what this book is about...running for exercise. This talks about its benefits and how not to push yourself too hard if you're just starting out. It also covers equipment needed (e.g. how to pick the right pair of running shoes), how to stay hydrated correctly, eating and diet when it comes to running, preventing injuries, and more. My favorite part is Chapter 11, which is about training plans. For example. on Monday it suggests running for 1 minute, and then walking for 2 minutes, and repeating this 10 times. The total training plan is eight weeks. After that, there are many bonus books, which include one on a 10-day green smoothie cleanse and recipes; one about sugar detoxification, which includes a diet plan and recipes; and one about gut cleansing, which talks about doing it for weight loss, more energy, overall health, and more (but doesn't come with recipes, unfortunately).

By Kassandra This book caught my attention because I used to be a regular runner. The beginners training guide for weight loss discusses the perks of running in trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Running is a sure way to lose weight since it boosts the metabolic rate of the body to burn extra calories which of course is the affected by the different foods we eat.Running involves more than buying a great pair of running shoes, it also involves understanding foot strikes or the best way of landing your foot when you run. Surprisingly, by learning the correct foot landing method, it will not only help improve your posture but also help you cover a longer running distance. this book is a great beginner’s guide to help you get your feet wet.i highly recommend it!

This book sort of helped me get my mind more focused on the proper manner and routine to do my running. It is mentioned here that cross-training is also beneficial, but I don’t know about that. Getting myself to run is difficult enough. The training plan is more useful to me; actually it is what I was looking for. When I searched for these type of books on amazon this one came on top so I just clicked it and it showed that the price would go up in 3 days, and I just had to grab it when it was at its promo period. But I cannot find fault in the guidelines given in this book. This 'was' a helpful book, but I just get the 'okay' feeling with this.

What makes stepmothering so hard? And why are we, as people and a culture, so hard on stepmothers? How can we make it easier? Stepmonster is a truly unique and groundbreaking book for women with stepchildren, men with kids who repartner, adult stepchildren, and anyone who cares about them. It is a comprehensive, cross-cultural, research-based reconsideration of stepfamily dynamics-from the perspective of the stepmother. How does she think, act, and feel, and why? Part no-holds barred memoir of stepmothering in the trenches, part analysis of why stepmothering is tough and steps women with stepkids can take to thrive, Stepmonster has been hailed as "the thinking woman's guide to stepmothering" and "life altering," igniting conversations, controversy, and changes in how we perceive and experience stepmothering.

Review "[Martin's] well-researched work delves into the animal world, fairy tales, psychology, and sociobiology" ---Library Journal

About the Author Wednesday Martin, PhD, has worked as a writer and social researcher for over two decades. The author of Stepmonster and the instant #1 New York Times bestseller Primates of Park Avenue, she has appeared as a step/parenting expert on CNN, NPR, BBC, Today, and GMA and has written for the New York Times and Psychology Today.Cris Dukehart is an award-winning storyteller who has narrated books in a wide variety of genres, from romance and science fiction to children's literature and autobiography. She can also be heard in commercials, e-learning projects, and corporate narrations.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. One day we are real, normal people, living alongside everyone else in the regular world, in normal time. Then we marry a man with children and somehow we become something utterly different from what we had believed ourselves to be. When we become a stepmother--even if defining ourselves by this role is the furthest thing from our minds, even if we have kids of our own and are loving mothers, even if his kids are grown...we are likely to find ourselves wrenched from whatever identity we inhabited, and forced into another way of being seen entirely. ...Why have the specific, shared experiences of women with stephchildren been largely ignored by feminists, sociologists, and even some of the very authors who write about stepmothers and stepmothering?...Disliking stepmothers is easy; suspecting them is more or less automatic. Caring about stepmothers, expressing concern about what they're going through, considering their reality at any length, requires a leap of faith.

Miller Let me start off by saying that nothing has liberated me from my internal struggles with step-motherhood like this book has. It has allowed me to feel okay about how I feel. Before my marriage I knew I was going to need some good advice on step-mothering so I bought a book on it. (And many others since) Regrettably, it was not this book as it was not yet published. THIS is the book you need. This book was written by a stepmother, for stepmothers. A negative review of this book could only come from someone who has not experienced step-motherhood!Since many won't read this review in its entirety, I must get this out right now...If you are contemplating marriage to a man with children then let me share a secret that no one shared with me... There isn't anything fun about a step family, and to elaborate, there is nothing fun about being a stepmom. I thought that step-motherhood was a mission I could undertake and I thought my gain was going to be far greater than my loss. I assure you... I was wrong!! No one warned me AT ALL of what I was facing and I am straight up pissed off about that. Being a step-mother makes for a difficult, lonely life and it doesn't ever feel like a real family. So I hate to sound bitter here, but the fact is, I am bitter. Save yourself the heartache. This is not what marriage (or family) was intended to be. Read this book and take heed! If you are not moved to seriously reevaluate your decision to marry this man, then you are a hopeless optimist. You will, throughout your marriage, be able to relate to damn near every sentence in this book.Stepmonster - Even the title might scare you from reading it. Who would want to admit that they might be a Stepmonster? And you could certainly never let anyone see you reading this book. I bought this book instead of getting it from the library as I normally would to avoid the embarrassment and shame I would feel if the librarian might wonder if I were really a Stepmonster. I bought a book cover so I could read it in public places. And this book encompasses that reality in and of itself. I am of the fortunate step mothers who have 'good' step kids. And rarer yet: 'good, teenage, step-daughters'. Yet I still find myself feeling these step-monsterish feelings, which has lead me to feel horrible about myself and doubt the heart of what I know to be true...I am a good person. My best friend is a step mom also,(Thank God)and I told her 2 things about this book before I was even 3 chapters into it.1) Wednesday has been reading my journal. She has pegged my sentiments down to the quotation marks when I write about my 'family'.2) Outside of our honest communication with each other, reading this book is the most therapeutic thing I have experienced since becoming a step-mom. It is important to have other stepmothers to talk to because no one except another Stepmom can truly understand and surely never show sympathy or compassion for an evil (or not so evil) Stepmom.Stepmothers don't get permission to feel anything less than never-ending love and understanding toward their step-kids. Yet those very step-kids are almost expected to dislike and reject their stepmothers, and understood if they do. All the while our husbands and the rest of society expect the adult (us, even if the children are also adults) to take the high road in the face of the steady pain that is inflicted upon us. Our step children are never expected to love us like they love their mothers (or even like us) but we stepmothers are not offered any clemency if we do not love our step children like we would (or do) love our own, and God forbid we don't even like them. Why?!?! If it weren't for the fact that I am the older of the 2 of us I would never be expected to accept such an injustice or demonstrate such pure sacrifice. Absurd! But there is no doubt that this is our reality.Wednesday also touches on the fact that our husbands contribute to our pain as much and sometimes more than the kids themselves; either by excusing or defending his child's actions, disregarding our feelings, not acknowledging our hurt, blaming us for not possessing the ability to bond or for not trying hard enough, regularly placing their children's needs before ours, or taking their side in a disagreement. This makes for a lonely, sad and unfulfilling marriage at the very least. But more likely adds to that, anger, regret, resentment, hopelessness & misery that you may have otherwise never had to experience if you had married a man who loved you first and foremost.I still have genuine moments of admiration for his children. They really are good kids, with good hearts. The truth is that if they were not my step-kids I could be free to love them for the wonderful spirits they are. But their mere position in my life and mine in theirs creates a barrier to that flow and serves as a daily reminder that I did not come first and there is nothing that can change that reality...Ever!Bleak as it may be, I have found it to be 100% accurate. I felt validated at every turn of the page. By the end of the book I felt more human than monsterish, and that, my friend, hasn't been the case in over 5 years. Thank you, Wednesday, for that invaluable gift. Your book has allowed me to love me again!

McDermott In a word: "Wow!"This is truly a first-of-its-kind book about stepmothering as it focuses exclusively on the needs, perceptions, emotions and experiences of the stepmother. Thank you, Wednesday Martin, for finally giving stepmothers validation and a voice. Well-written and impeccably sourced, it presents an unflinching look at stepmothering. I couldn't put it down and read it in one day!I know from personal experience, both as a stepmother and stepdaughter, that stepparenting is one of the toughest and most thankless jobs in the world; compassion fatigue is a real risk. And, unfortunately, to date, most of the books disseminated by the blended family/stepparenting industry are child-centric, advising newly-blended families to put the needs of the children from the prior marriage first. Add to that all of the messages from popular culture, media, etc. that subtly and not-so-subtly vilify stepmothers (e.g., "Cinderella") and it should come as no surpise that second marriages with stepchildren fail at such an alarming rate. "Stepmonster" brings a fresh perspective to this particular sub-genre of self-help books; I sincerely hope it is but the first of many books to fairly explore the precarious role of the stepmother in modern family life.My personal take-away message from this book was that, as stepparents and stepchildren, we are, to each other, non-essential personnel and must strive to form our bonds based upon civility and mutual respect (picking up after oneself doesn't hurt either!). We don't have to a have a perfect relationship or one that mimics the biological parent-child relationship. Rather, the stepparent-stepchild relationship can take many forms, ranging from a close, warm, family-like interaction to an arms-length but cordial experience, depending upon each individual. Most importantly, a stepmom owes it to herself to carefully evaluate what she can and cannot give her stepchildren in order to preserve her family and avoid burn-out.Kudos to Wednesday Martin!

119 of 128 people found the following review helpful. What Every Stepmother Needs to Know By Michele Hush Wednesday Martin could have written a moving memoir about her own experiences as a stepmother. She could have pieced together an enlightening narrative from interviews with stepmothers. Or she could have done a scholarly, rigorously researched treatise on what history and sociobiology have to say about stepmothering. Instead she has done all three, succinctly and articulately, in fewer than 300 pages.Stepmonster dares to speak uncomfortable truths: that even the nicest stepmothers and stepchildren frequently don't like each other; that it can take years for stepfamilies to settle into something resembling a satisfactory adjustment; that stepmothers and stepchildren virtually never form bonds as close as birth parents and children; and that all of these things are completely normal. For any woman who is a stepmother or is considering becoming one, this book is like water in the desert.

A Reality Check in Lock Creek By Linda Thompson, Host of The Authors Show The really cool thing about Smith’s books is that although she gives you a cliff hanger in the last chapter, you know more is coming. And now that I’ve finished book 4, I feel like I have a new family with Derrick and Anne. This one was not only hilarious in spots, it was very sad in others. The story is very well written and certainly does not focus on the sad, but it tends to remind the reader that life isn’t all a bed of roses (or tulips in this case). The continuing saga of Derrick and Anne and of their extended family continues to evolve and never gets boring. Once again, I’m eager to see what comes next.

At Last! A practical handbook for Shakespearean Performance.

The bard wrote the world's greatest verse plays. Almost all of them are performed or read as prose—by default, not by decision. This is a tragic waste but it is fixable. THIS BOOK HAS TWO GOALS: - to persuade you that the great rewards of verse speaking and reading are worth much more than the modest effort required to master them - to provide the information and guidance needed to lead you down this path Use this book and experience the music of Shakespeare as never before. Believe it! Praise for Shakespeare's Verse The book is terrific. Shakespeare's Verse: A User's Manual is an essential text for the actor and director; a comprehensive and persuasive method for tackling the challenge of speaking Shakespeare. Roger Gross' lifelong love of Shakespeare is evident on every page as is his musician's ear. The result is an easy-to-understand, lively and most important, practical guide. ~ Michele Gallery, two-time Emmy Award winner. ***** Roger Gross brings his long history of directing Shakespeare both professionally and academically, as well as his years of scholarship, to his very readable, very practical guide to speaking Shakespeare's verse. It's a treasure trove of information and advice for lovers of Shakespeare at every level. ~ Dakin Matthews, Actor, Scholar and Producer. ***** This book is a wonder! Written in such a straightforward—almost conversational—style that no reader can possibly be inhibited by the material. It is delightfully short yet manages to be absolutely comprehensive. ~ Dr. Robert Barton, author of the popular book Acting: Onstage and Off and seven others.

Shakespeare's Verse: A User's Manual: for actors, directors, readers, and enlightened teachers, by Roger Gross

Review A must read! Roger Gross spent his life studying, directing and performing in Shakespeare's plays. His work with Shakespeare led to his first book, Understanding Playscripts, which literally started my career. The intent of his work with the verse is to teach techniques that are easy to follow, but that enhance the actor's ability to "speak the speech" more understandably for the modern audience. This book WILL improve your work as an actor. Imagine: A lifetime of experience synthesized into a guide that will ensure your own lifetime of experience! ~ Gerald S. Argetsinger

Review What a great book! If only we had that under our belt back in the days of blood and guts. I enjoyed reading it and I loved learning from it as well. This is an excellent book for learning how to understand, love and use Shakespeare's verse. A book that everyone can benefit from. But for me, Roger Gross' book, Shakespeare's Verse . . . is an acting book! It aids actors in finding their character through the use of verse. To find out how Shakespeare intended us to read his lines helps in the development of the character. Rhythm, emphasis as well as meaning, tell us much about the intelligence, class, intentions, age and abilities of a given character. All this Gross shows us how to mine from the text though the verse. He teaches us not only how to find the beauty of Shakespeare's verse but he gives us a valuable tool to help us find the essence of his characters. ~ Kurtwood Smith, award-winning television and film actor

Mitchell I took Roger's verse class in grad school and even TA'd an undergrad class just to get it a bit more in the bones. I hope to find a way to explore and share this technique with others. I'm certainly a believer. Completely altered my understanding of Shakespeare as an actor, scholar, fan, and playwright. This book is everything you need to unlock the power of his verse. So much more going on once you start with the verse. As an actor, you discover subtext, timing, pacing, direction, context, and so much more through verse. As a playwright, you're mostly in awe of how elegant it's all put together. No parenthetical cop-outs before a line- hell, hardly any stage directions. It's all in the line. It's all in the verse.

It is a clear and comprehensive handbook that teaches readers the value of speaking and reading verse. This book is a great tool for all looking to be stronger educators, actors, directors, and lovers of Shakespeare.

Dazzling, clamorous and exotic, the circus is a theatre of the improbable and impossible. From the days of travelling troupes of acrobats and jugglers to the grand spectacle of the Cirque du Soleil, the circus has exerted an indelible fascination. Of all our myths of reinvention, rebirth, second acts and new identities, running away to join the circus has a special allure. In this book Linda Simon asks why we long to soar on the flying trapeze; to ride bareback on a spangled horse; to parade through city streets in costumes of glitter and gold. Why have artists and writers repeatedly or obsessively taken the circus as their subject? What does the circus offer us that we think we so desperately need? The Greatest Shows on Earth takes us from eighteenth-century hippodromes in Britain to intimate one-ring circuses in nineteenth-century Paris, where Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso became enchanted by aerialists and clowns. We meet P. T. Barnum, James Bailey and the enterprising Ringling Brothers, who created the golden age of American circuses. We explore contemporary transformations of the circus, from the whimsical Circus Oz in Australia to New York City’s Big Apple Circus. Circus people are central to the story: trick riders and tightrope walkers, sword swallowers and animal trainers, contortionists and clowns – these are the men and women who create the sensational, raucous, titillating and incomparable world of the circus.Beautifully illustrated, rich in historical detail and full of colourful anecdotes, Linda Simon’s vibrant history is as enchanting as a night at the big-top itself.

The Greatest Shows on Earth: A History of the Circus, by Linda Simon

Review “To paraphrase the words of the great poet E. E. Cummings, dang everything but the circus. Simon evokes the greatest show on earth in all its history and wonder. So run away from home, crawl under the tent, and enjoy this book.” (Wavy Gravy)“Throughout, Simon demonstrates her understanding that circuses are mystical and complex, full of dazzle and escapism, both social and sexual. . . . Simon brings a learned hand to this bright history of the circus, which emblazons as it preserves the magic.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Our fascination with the fantastic—people and animals doing things most of us simply cannot do—is apparently as old as humankind. Simon offers ancient historical evidence, some from thousands of years before the Common Era, of incredible performers, from dancing Egyptian girls to ceramic Mexican acrobats to depictions of ancient Japanese tumblers. Through an engaging narrative and impressive photos, posters, and famous paintings by Lautrec, Degas, and others, Simon conjures the long and captivating history of the circus. . . . A sweeping look at the ancient fascination with spectacle and how it has evolved over time.” (Booklist)“A jewel of a publication. . . . Simon writes about the various phases of circus history in a dense, rich prose—enlivened by some superb chapter-headings, quotes, and anecdotes. Here is an eclectic and well-chosen compilation of responses to, and illustrations of, the circus. . . . I enjoyed this book greatly. Linda Simon is clever and a thorough researcher. . . . she writes with a sharp eye for detail and page-turning momentum.”  (Spectator)“Engrossing. . . . It takes a book such as Simon’s vividly written and richly illustrated one to give us some inkling of what Emily Dickinson felt when she wrote ‘Friday I tasted life. It was a vast morsel. A Circus passed the house—still I feel the red in my mind.’”  (Sunday Times)“Handsomely presented on superior paper and with many illustrations, over half of them in colour. . . . [the book] ranges widely in time and place and evokes its subject with great immediacy. . . . A whirl of chapters on trick-riders, trapeze artists, animals, prodigies, and so forth, sweeps the reader into the atmosphere of the circus. . . . Simon enlivens history with roughly equal helpings of anecdote and philosophical enquiry.”  (Times Literary Supplement)“Like anyone with a hankering for fairs, puppets, and music halls, I adored the world of the circus—and as [this] beautifully illustrated and superbly researched volume makes plain, it is a form of entertainment that has accumulated distinguished devotees.”  (Daily Mail)“A whimsical and enlightening history of the circus. . . . Simon does a fine job of exploring the subtexts of the circus. In addition to what is promised—‘a living cabinet of wonders, a theatre of the improbable, and even the impossible, an escape from reality’—the circus has always appealed to our baser instincts. . . . Above all, Simon shows how men and women over the centuries have been obsessed with controlling their bodies and, by extension, their minds—and how the spotlight and the ‘irresistible burst of applause’ were often fatally addictive.”  (Macleans Magazine)“In the age of CGI and editing, the ‘fleeting moment of magical spectacle’ that the circus represents holds a grip on our popular imagination about as firm as an aerialist’s on the trapeze. It’s an obsession that is intriguingly documented in Simon’s The Greatest Show on Earth . . . its great strength is providing both a strong practical narrative and a considerably interwoven portrait of the related thoughts of artists and writers (and later filmmakers) from the earliest stages of the circus’s existence, given, in many cases, the very specific inspiration that the circus provided them.”  (Daily Beast)“Simon has achieved a great deal in this book. Often relating circuses to the ways they have been represented in art, she offers detailed descriptions of the basic elements of circus acts. After a fine introduction covering circus history, she devotes chapters to the elements that make up circus performance. . . . This beautifully produced book—with its excellent color reproductions, extensive notes, and useful bibliography—is a must for those interested in popular culture. . . . Essential.”  (Choice)

By lyndonbrecht This is an excellent book, but the title is somewhat misleading. The book has a lot of circus history, but it is by no means complete. You'll pick up a lot of circus-related information. George Washington was a repeat customer of the first American circus in 1793. Picasso's first lover was a trick rider and his first art dealer, a former clown. Alexander Calder (inventor of the mobile) made toy circus figures and then on his hands and knees would manipulate them as a performance--audiences loved it.Simon breaks down the circus into 10 chapters that includes the development of circuses like Ringling and Barnum Bailey, but the strength of the book is looking at the kinds of acts that go into a circus, and these chapters include some remarkable stories of iconic and not so famous performers. These include Chapter 4, Cavalcades, on the era of circus parades. Chapter 5, Without a Net, looks at rope acts, high wire acts and related, including such artists as Blondin.. Chapter 6, Beasts, is on animal acts, particularly big cats and "lion tamers." Chapter 7 Clowns, looks at how clowns developed and at some of the major artists such as Oleg Popov and Emmett Kelley. Chapter 8 Feats, looks at strong men (and women), acrobats, contortionists, jugglers and others. Chapter 9, Prodigies, looks at sideshow elements such as the bearded lady and three legged boys, and may be the best chapter in the book--apparently, the circus provided a sense of acceptance and larger family for people who'd not have done so well elsewhere. The book is nicely illustrated. The other chapters are less focused. Chapter 10 "Transformations," looks ate the present and evolving future of the circus and while brief, the rise of shows like the Cirque du Soleil. Chapter 1 lays out a circus history and Chapter 2 "Cirques Intimes" looks mostly at French and British shows ancestral to and variations on the usual idea of the circus, but these tended to be repeated shows in a dedicated venue rather than the traveling circus that is the usual circus stereotype.

"Focusing on the Extravagant and Transformative Power of the Circus" By Ivana Mladenovic Linda Simon's book, "The Greatest Shows on Earth: A History of the Circus" is a remarkably readable, entertaining, thoroughly researched, and historically accurate discussion and investigation of the history and development of the circus. This type of mesmerizing, daring, and dedicated entertainment is wonderfully discussed, tracked, and cataloged in 10 chapters and 136 attractive and carefully chosen illustrations. This fascinating and unique study presents the circus as a historical document of the ideals, desires, and expectations of a given time period. Since the time of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and medieval European fairs and marketplaces, the celebration of "human superiority and vulnerability" has always been a focal point. When such "common experiences" were eventually expanded into a distinct, enclosed, directed place of action, the circus developed greatly as an exciting business and romantic occupation. The spontaneity of street entertainment became increasingly localized as a significant community ritual. The circus provided endless diversions for the audience and endless possibility for professional recognition for the performers. So the circus as an exhibition of similarities and differences between cultures truly made it the ideal arena that "represented the world."The author's first hand accounts of the organization of circus life behind the scenes and in the center of the action, provides many insights on how the "greatest shows on earth" were structured, implemented, and perceived. The author proves that the circus art form began as personal experiment. A given performer wished to test the limits of his or her skill and body. In fact, the premise of the book substantiates that "the body as spectacle is the origin of the circus."As circus performances evolved into increasingly innovative, expressive, and bold displays, transformations of identity flourished. Audiences enthusiastically embraced the unusual, unconventional, and "superhuman". Many individuals celebrated the ideals of freedom and experimentation linked to the "improbable and impossible". Modernists and bohemians, artists and writers especially appreciated and identified with the boldness of expression, visibility, creation of self, and the character of the performers. Artists like Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Seraut, Leger, Miró, Renoir, Chagall, Rouault, Alexander Calder, Picasso, and others enjoyed observing and recording the skills and techniques of the performers. Miró and Chagall were entranced by the surreal and dream-like potential of such an environment. Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec focused on its colorful realism in action. Assemblage artist, Calder enjoyed its playful and changing aspects. Rouault explored the mysterious, wild, and macabre within it. And Picasso's Proto-Cubist phase searched the feelings and lives of performers behind the scenes. Each artist's impression was also united in a joint admiration for the decision of performers to adhere to a distinct identity not prescribed by tradition or society. French modernist Leger claimed that "the ring is freedom" where the performer "fearlessly displays merits and talents". American Expressionist Marsden Hartley admired the athleticism and "daring equestrianism" in performances. German Expressionist Paul Klee was enchanted by the vibrancy, energy, and complexity of performances. He reinterpreted them as a philosophical interplay between life and nature. He claimed that the performer "learns to balance forces that act upon him or her".Writer E.B. White idealized and romanticized the circus as a "gaudy dream" and "ring of ambition, happiness, and youth." The arena of forgetfulness was endlessly entertaining and inspiring for many other writers such as Henry Miller, Emily Dickinson, and William Dean Howells. Writers and artists enjoyed the carefree spirit of the circus arena as an "antidote to the pressures of life". Each artist and wirier did his or her best to reveal the most "intimate and close portrait" of a favorite performer. Not surprisingly, such celebrations of circus life also created what the author labels as "circus myths". These myths were fostered by the glamorous ideals of escape from obligation, the promise of new adventure, and community of camaraderie which the circus profession perpetuated. However, such myths masked the harsh realities of long, dedicated hours of training. For example, many dedicated hours of training for "self expression, self definition, perfection of craft, and human character" were encouraged with the founding of "Clown Schools". These specialized organizations became increasingly popular over time. Perhaps that is why clowns were thought to be "the soul of the circus."Circus performers remained sensitive to the reality of endless competition, the "changing ambience of daily life", jealousy from rivals and teammates, risks of permanent injury, "hidden and shifting identities", emotional stress over rejection, loss of popularity, decreased physical ability, depression, loneliness, and the fear of an uncertain financial future.Since a circus performance often questioned, "what humans could do and what they should do", the circus environment was perceived as inappropriate communal entertainment as well. There was opposition to its function and existence, to its many "temptations", and its lack of restraint. Critics were convinced that it encouraged wild and unbridled behavior, the ridiculing of authority, harsh treatment, and even the enslavement of animals. As a result, such popular social gatherings were often defined as "foolish", of no use to the improvement of society as a whole, and not a career for "useful men." However, it is abundantly clear that numerous seriously ambitious, talented, and creative men and women have enthusiastically embraced the circus profession and its potential for financial and personal recognition. The famous Frenchman, Charles Blondin crossed Niagara Falls on a hemp cable in 1858. Alfredo Condona also distinguished himself as "the most astounding man of the flying trapeze." He earned the flattering title, "Adonis of the Altitudes". Monsier D'Atelie became the "Man with the Iron Jaw". Tight rope dancer, Con Colleano was declared to be the "Wizard of the Wire", and animal trainer Issac van Amburgh was celebrated as the "King of the Beasts".Circus women also had numerous opportunities to display their distinctive skills, courageous character, and feminine charms. "Dainty Marie" walked the rope with a parasol. Mabel Stark became a tiger trainer, and Katie Sandwina earned the title of "Lady Hercules" because she displayed amazing physical strength. Of course, throughout circus history, there were many more male and female equestrians, tight rope walkers, trapeze artists, wild animal trainers, acrobats, jugglers, fire throwers, and other ring leaders who found it thrilling and satisfying to be appreciated and rewarded for their free-spirited dedication.Perhaps the most moving section of this extraordinary account of circus lives is the documentation of the disabled and/or marginalized performers' experiences, challenges, self-doubts, and setbacks. The author notes that their particular desire to rise above "disparaging terms" such as "abnormal, freak, or oddity" confirmed their self-esteem, self-affirmation, intelligence, politeness, and "uncommon dignity." People with a "defect" were declared as "favored by nature" and social organizations became dedicated to their "elevated life." As "physical marvels" on a quest for improving their circumstances, inspirational and defiant "prodigies" of strength and courage established themselves as extraordinary individuals. They inspired new ways of thinking and accepting a "different" person.According to the author, criticisms of circus life and lifestyle did not "detract from the allure and metaphorical power" of its glowing legacy.Over the course of its 100-year history, audiences and performers have collaborated together in the enjoyment of what the circus could provide.Circuses as the "antidote" to the routine of everyday life had tremendous success throughout 19th century America, Britain, and France. Philip Astley opened the first circus in England in 1768. Later, circuses and circus performances evolved into an increasingly complex demonstration of skill, dedicated staff, ambitious national and international publicity, and greater independence and innovation in presentations. P.T. Barnum's transformative and entrepreneurial ideas of 1871 were expanded to exceed audience expectations. The Barnum Circus had 30 additional competitors and rivals during this time period. They included James Bailey's Great London Circus as well as the famous Ringling Brothers Circus. In 1918, all 3 popular circus entertainments merged as the "Big One", the most popular circus attraction of the time.Historically and as an ever-popular art form, the circus grants the possibility to "see what the world contains beside yourself." Circus life can be a liberating and positive source of self-identity for all who chose to become associated with it. This book asks us to further investigate, "what the circus has meant in the past, what it means for us now." Linda Simon admirably documents and illuminates the history, experience, and validity of this unique entertainment. She does so with greater dedication than has ever been done before.

Great Introductory History for Art Lovers By K. kavanagh The 'A' in the subtitle of this book is more relevant after reading than it might seem at first glance. This is a history that is told through the lens of other artists, and how the evolving circus has impacted on visual arts and literature. Major plot points in the development of the form are laid out, and have some nice detail, all interspersed with quoted passages from famous writers and the related stories of painters who picked the circus as their subject. The book is laid out simply and is in a very accessible and engaging style, although some of the time jumps between the tales of Western Europe and America (which the book doesn't step outside) are a little confusing. The illustrations, photographs, paintings and circus posters, are excellent.

They're similar to sudoku, but in these puzzels, the numbers are actually treated as numbers, and you have to reason about arithmetic operations on those numbers to solve these puzzles---in addition to typical sudoku-style logical reasoning. There's something for everybody in this book, from easy to difficult, and there are various different types of puzzles (using simply the numbers 1 through n, but also starting at zero, or from -m to +m, and using other operations in addition to +, -, x and :). This book offers a range of increasingly difficult puzzles. Some can be solved in minutes by school childeren, other cost hours of careful calculations. The introduction really helps the untrained puzzler, clearly explaining solving strategies.I bought the book for my upcoming holiday trip; I have to admit that I couldn't wait that long solving these puzzles.

It's oriented to a wide range of puzzlers, just take the book and all real-life problems look like a joke as compared with the challenge of solving the Calcudoku which is in front of you.

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve prime ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace, a meeting like no other in British public life. It is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. The Audience breaks this contract of silence. It imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each prime minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next prime minister. The Audience by Peter Morgan premiered at the Gielgud Theatre, London, in March 2013. It returned to the Apollo Theatre, London, in this revised version in April 2015. "This is something rarer: funny and truthful, goodhearted, spiky, full of surprises. I loved every minute...there are stunning political moments...It's all fiction, of course, and often painfully funny, yet is expresses large and serious truths. " (The Times).

The play brilliantly highlighted the different personalities behind Britain's post-war Prime Ministers and their often complex relationships with their long-serving Monarch. Helen Mirren was her usual faultless self and the actors portraying her PMs were to a man, and woman, very good!

Although I've read a lot of British history, the PMs are still hard to distinguish other than Churchill, Thatcher, and Blair. This play brings each of them to life (oddly omitting Blair, although rumor is that he'll be added for Broadway, since American audiences know him) , all being guided by HM The Queen.

It is interesting to imagine R's perspective on a great many things, especially her life, and Morgan's play does that. In other words, this is about more than the PM's. You'll be surprised at who her favorite PM is.

A tax book to treasure By Phillip Taylor MBE A TAX BOOK TO TREASUREAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersUK tax lawyers will treasure this book, especially those involved in dealing with international clients looking to minimize their exposure to tax – legally, that is.As the title indicates, this book, in the words of author Martin Palmer, considers the use of UK company and UK partnership strategies pertaining to tax planning ‘in a variety of international contexts and describes the UK tax implications’.As the UK continues to be ‘an attractive corporate domicile for international business’, the book focuses on the international use of UK companies and the tax consequences that accrue for UK companies in receipt of non-UK income.Published by Jordan’s, this is the fourth and latest edition, which indicates the high regard in which this book is held, particularly by tax lawyers and advisers. Clearly and in accessible manner, the author covers what appears to be the widest possible spectrum of topics pertaining to international tax planning – perhaps too wide to mention in detail here. New material includes new chapters on double taxation relief… anti-avoidance legislation… the proposed UK ‘beneficial owner’ register… and the BEPS (Base Erosion and Profits Shifting) Action Plan 6.What emerges throughout this volume is the author’s ability to define with precision, certain key concepts in areas where considerable ambiguity might otherwise arise. Take for example, the meaning of the term ‘trading activities’. The author’s wry comment is that ‘HMRC seems to take a very broad conceptual view of the meaning of the term….’ And just how broad is explained in detail.Another example is the word ‘substantial’ also a term supposedly well understood. Here HMRC is clearer. ‘Substantial’ in terms of whether a company is trading or not means, ‘more than twenty per cent, measured by the company turnover, asset base and expenses’. Also carefully explained is the Limited Liability Partnership; the LLP being referred to as ‘a tax transparent entity -- a separate legal personality, yet taxed like a partnership’.We cite these as only a few examples of Palmer’s commendable mission to clarify and explain. In so doing he has certainly extracted the most salient quotes from the relevant HMRC manuals ‘so you don’t have to’ … a time-saver for busy practitioners, if there ever was one. Also noting the useful tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments and international and foreign material, it is fair to say that every lawyer undertaking work with international corporate clients -- whether tax specialist or not -- will find this book a succinct and convenient source of advice in tax planning consultancy. The law is stated as at 25 February 2015.

Chess is an exemplary manifestation of human thought and is the intellectual game par excellence. It is one of the most difficult and demanding games known to man, played in every part of the world and studied assiduously by psychologists and cognitive scientists. Chess contains an entire universe of its own in which each single player may find a reflection of his own personality and identify with an aspect of the game particular to him. Although chess has a competitive and warlike structure, it possesses at the same time a meditative quality. The game has remained unchanged over the centuries in its symbolism, its specific ability to transmit messages and its potential to develop mental capacity. Chess has been shown over time to be a metaphor able to illustrate abstract ideas and complex systems, as well as being a very effective tool in the hands of psychologists and cognitive scientists to better understand the human mind.

I consider THE ENCHANTMENT OF CHESS a nice primer about the relationship chess has to psychology, art, science, and sports. By paolo perico Henry Purcell - A primer of chess intended for players of all levels, from general players to masters. A fine book also aimed at those who have an interest in the history and culture of chess. Besides, as the author himself explains in the Introduction, the book may also assist the reader in developing his knowledge and skill in chess, a game as serious as entairtainig.
