JOHN F. LEVIN is an American playwright, novelist and journalist. Three Plays of Skill and Savy By Ernie Brill For many years, John Levin has written some of the most politically sophisticated and entertaining dramas in the U.S. Three Plays ,most welcome, admirably displays his skills and savvy.In Vera Cruz, meticulously researched, Levin offers a fairly unknown story of Jack London's incredible adventure in Mexico with the most unlikely involvement with a young American military officer, Douglas MacArthur. Based on true life incidents, Levin offers a rare view into some of our country's foreign policy's murkier manipulations.A more contemporary view of financial skullduggery shows up in The Big Money, as fresh as yesterday's Wall Street banking scandals. Big Money is a classical tragedy with a classical fall guy whose voracious greed gets the better of him and destroys lives in the process in a darkly humorous and scathing dissection by Levin.Snowbirds, set in contemporary Mexico, starts as innocuous elderly couple in a camper on vacation, yet morphs into an entirely different journey, perhaps a mission of retrieval of past ideals, yet with renewed commitments. By Paul Dixon I've long been a fan of John Levin's writing having thoroughly enjoyed his novel The Great Divide (written with Frank Robinson) and his plays written for the theater and the screen. All his work shares an artful mixture of the personal and political, with characters that are sometimes significant players in the zeitgeist of their times and others, small timers, whose palpable yearning for a bigger bite of the apple, always beyond their reach, is absolutely heartbreaking. The accuracy of exotic historical situations is remarkable and entertaining. In addition his characters; with all their aches and yearnings, hubris and humor, are folks we feel we know, have known, will know again and most importantly root for. The personal is political, the political personal and always emotionally satisfying. I'm so pleased these three wonderful works are now available to be read, performed and celebrated.

By Jeffrey Gordon I wanted to read these plays because I had quite enjoyed Levin's political thriller "The Great Divide" (which he wrote with Frank Robinson). Each of these three plays is different with for example Veracruz set at the time of the U.S.'s incursion into Mexico and deals with the meetings of famous historical figures, while Big Money takes place today. Big Money is a tragedy about a progressive leader systematically drawn away from his ideals and into a ring of hell, never quite realizing it or able to face up to what he has done. Powerful plays, well written. Highly recommended.

Miller Edstrom's arrangements are always inventive and sound professional, but the most successful books in this series are those based on jazz source material. "Stride Piano" really shines! Of the nineteen pieces in the book, ten are based on original arrangements by Waller, Tatum, Johnson and Morton. I did a side-by-side comparison of Edstrom's versions against transcriptions of recorded performances of "Carolina Shout", "Numb Fumblin'" and "Smashing Thirds". They're quite similar: The transcriptions are longer because more variations are included and the left-hand parts are a bit easier in Edstrom's versions (but there are still lots of tenths). The new versions are easier to read - probably because of subtle harmonic and rhythmic differences but also because the page layout is clean and spaced well.The rest of the tunes are very satisfying interpretations of some wonderful pieces including "Dinah", "Honeysuckle Rose", "Liza" and a great new take on "Ain't Misbehavin'"!These arrangements are not easy. If you found the level of the Cocktail Piano, Smooth Jazz or Broadway Jazz books just right, you're going to work harder to learn these.

This collection is slightly different than most in the series in that there are fewer pieces, but they are fleshed out more extensively. I really like the arrangements that are patterned after those of the original masters like Fats, James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, and Art Tatum - but they will challenge your technique more so than the arrangements than the other collections in the series - this is a good thing. BE has also put in a few more accessible arrangements (Dinah, Liza, & Making Whopee) to get your fingers and your swinging stride warmed up. My only frustration is aimed at Hal Leonard - why can they not make a binding that will lie flat and stay that way? I'm just saying.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Is this book really "Stride" ?? By Kevin Nolan I just bought this book - but - am new to Stride Piano. I open it and see "A'int Misbehavin'". Is THAT Stride Piano??? I worry that this book is less than an accurate representation of what true, original Stride Piano is, and is all about. In short - I don't trust it! Perhaps someone in the know can clarify ?? Not judging the quality of the book - just it's authenticity. I'll stand corrected on this - but my impression was that quite a number of stride piano arrangements had single notes or octaves in the bass - and not fists full of chords as per "Rag" - but all of these arrangements have chords as their left hand. As said - I'm no expert on this and will stand corrected, but suspect this book is not "true Stride"

By Ian Sainsbury If you play sngs regularly and are happy with your pre-flop decisions, you'll be glad of these books which tackle the various post-flop scenarios in a thorough, well thought-out style. Ben is a consistent winner at low-stakes sngs on pokerstars so his approach is worth studying. If you play these games - or want to - I can't think of a better, more cost effective way of improving your game. Fantastic value.

Some hands I can't tell what the writer is trying to teach because the table icon is too small to read the cards. I have to rely on reading the text to understand what the writer is saying because of what I wrote earlier. I only gave it 3 stars because of this and because the book is expensive. I just might return it.

It's also heavy in weight - there are a lot of recipes and background information on how you go about eating certain foods and why. I'd call it a "good eating bible". There are endless tips and tricks and I buried my head in this for hours and still have a lot to learn and recipes to try out!!!There are recipes including soups to meals with side dishes and also snacks and drinks, but the authors talk about lifestyle, research on the latest science on food and there are even success weight-loss stories in this 300-page book.

By Amazon Customer I think this has to be the best low carb book on the market. The way it's laid out, with the practical advice about following a nutritious LCHF diet from the dietitician first, then the sumptuous recipes, then the in-depth discussion of the science, is unique and really helps make the information digestible. LCHF works for as long as you stick to it and works best for people to whom it becomes a way of life - there's nothing about the way of life laid out in this book that seems especially difficult or unusual once you understand the reasons for it, and the recipes certainly don't give the impression that you'd be depriving yourself of anything. It's great that the science section was made as up-to-date as possible and that Grant Schofield points out those places where the evidence for newer ideas and explanations for newer observations are still incomplete. This brings the reader into the picture, instead of talking down to them.I've been living the LCHF life for 5 years and I haven't lost weight, because I had no weight to lose. Instead I've lost acid reflux, headaches, joint pain, diarrhea, tinnitus, blurred vision, almost all colds and flus, insomnia, anxiety, and boredom. No doubt these are unbelievable claims, but they are not hard ones to test, and What The Fat? provides easy to follow instructions.

BUT there are very few recipes in the book and the the digial version suggest you buy the hard copy to get more recipes. Really can't understand why I should have to do this. I could have bought the hard copy but don't want to stockpile a bunch of paper!!

Its well laid out, has easy to use lists, easy to understand information with plenty of sensible case studies. If you have any interest in your own health, you must have this book. Why? Because it gives you valuable information about what to look for in your legal team. If you aren't seeing what he thinks you should see, you need to find another lawyer!Overall, this is an excellent book and definitely worth reading if you are interested in this topic or have a need to know.Disclaimer: I am a personal friend of the author and have edited a previous book he wrote. Not only that, but this is an excellent resource if you are a paralegal or looking into being a pre-law major. Y.P. Mazor gives excellent and extensive resources and data for the different questions you may have about immigration and law.The thing I liked the most was that he does not give you inaccurate details, period. He has supporting evidence to support what his book is about and I recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about immigration.

Originally published in 1985, One Chord Wonders was the first full-length study of the glory years of British punk. The book argues that one of punk’s most significant political achievements was to expose the operations of power in the British entertainment industries as they were thrown into confusion by the sound and the fury of musicians and fans. Through a detailed examination of the conditions under which punk emerged and then declined, Dave Laing develops a view of the music as both complex and contradictory. Special attention is paid to the relationship between punk and the music industry of the late 1970s, in particular the political economy of the independent record companies through which much of punk was distributed. Using examples from a wide range of bands, individual chapters use the techniques of semiology to consider the radical approach to naming in punk (from Johnny Rotten to Poly Styrene), the instrumental and vocal sound of the music, and its visual images. The concluding chapter critically examines various theoretical explanations of the punk phenomenon, including the class origins of its protagonists and the influential view that punk represented the latest in a line of British youth “subcultures.” There is also a chronology of the punk era, plus discographies and a bibliography.

Dave Laing is an associate editor of the journal Popular Music History and an honorary research fellow at the University of Liverpool who has been researching and writing about popular music, its business, and its politics for more than 40 years. His books include Buddy Holly and The Sound of Our Time. He is a coeditor of The Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World and The Faber Companion to 20th Century Popular Music and has contributed to several collections, including Cambridge Companion to the Beatles; Global Pop, Local Language; and The Popular Music Studies Reader. TV Smith was the founder, singer, and songwriter of the Adverts, who formed in late 1976 and became one of the leading bands in the first wave of British punk rock. He continues to tour the world, bringing his epic solo show to ever-increasing audiences.

Laing, an English researcher, chooses a more academic approach. He scrutinizes how late-1970s British punk applies to cultural critique. He incorporates insights from Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault and Julia Kristeva. This reprint of Laing's 1985 semiological analysis precedes Jon Savage's first-hand account, England's Dreaming (1991). Introduced briefly by The Adverts' guitarist-singer, T.V. Smith, One Chord Wonders: Power and Meaning in Punk Rock takes its title from that band's song, a tribute to D.I.Y. spunk.Unlike Savage or Smith, Laing distances himself as a scholar. He finds predecessors for punk's nexus within pop culture. In its collision of the authentic with the commercial, punk's predicament echoes that of British folksong proponents in 1899 and London pub-rockers in the earlier 1970s. Movements seeking a return or revival of "basic" music confront those who capitalize on its inherent potential for profit. Craving exposure, musicians often must capitulate to the system. Rejecting one tradition, innovators resurrect another, back-to-basics. Johnny Ramone, cited here, embodies this choice. "We're playing pure rock'n'roll with no blues or folk or any of that stuff in it."Instead, punk promoted "artiface, exaggeration, and outrage." One chord wonders turned an insult into a celebration. Distorted sounds and mangled meanings created a "frontal assault" on triple-disc or concept albums of the mid-1970s. However, Laing reports how this music reworked old lyrical themes. Us vs. The Man repeated. Narcissism remained along with protest. Lacking a danceable element, punk stressed exclusivity and negativity. Failing to break out in 1977-1978, punk, Laing asserts, faded rapidly. He notes how broadcasters resisted its disruption and preferred easier listening.In chapters titled "Formation," "Naming," "Looking," "Listening" and "Framing," Laing dissects the strategies claimed by punk. Drier at times, if supplemented by data, the middle section of his book muddles along. Ivory tower jargon slows its pace. It revives in its later stages, where a short "picture section" shows how punks adopted their public roles to what Laing defines as the movement's "provisional discursive formation." That is, punk offered positions to adopt, roles to play and rules to adhere to. Laing presents publicity shots, professional photographs taken in concert, and vamping poses as proof. The last category portrayed one trap punk fell into. Originally seeking to provoke or to subvert, earnestly posing punks "allow themselves to be consumed as pin-ups of sex objects."The final chapter, "After," adds an intriguing analogy. Laing notes that prior to punk, new bands felt making an album was equivalent to making a full-length film. Such an artistic effort seemed to overwhelm. Therefore, professional producers and studios had to be recruited and funded. By contrast, Laing reasons, punk was akin to creating a magazine or a paperback. Cassettes around 1980 began to change the way music by amateurs was distributed. Laing contrasts the cost of a hardcover book to that of a photocopy, as fans began to join with musicians to reproduce their efforts cheaply.Enriching this study, Laing refutes the claim that most punks came from a working-class background. He compares their class and education to that of beat groups between 1963-1967. He finds little difference in these categories. Such statistics deepen the value of this compact book. It may serve well in seminars or by scholars accordingly, as a critical contribution to Popular Music Studies.Finally, Laing places punk within intellectual contexts. Benjamin and Adorno looked at Dada and at the "shock-effects" of radical art, as predecessors to punk, in Laing's estimation. Similarly, he ends with Barthes and Kristeva. They located within the avant-garde "the site of the return of the repressed." Some punks embraced mid-1970s semiotic possibilities of confusion. Fragmenting, discontents chose other fashions, sartorial and musical, to emulate by the decade's end. Diehards chose "anchored meanings" of mohawks, Oi and slogans embroidered across leather jackets.What united punk, for one or two years in the later 1970s, was the tension between realistic lyrics decrying conformity and repression and the sonic jolt that undermines musical predictability. Full of paradox, punk in Laing's judgment produced a problem. It set out as a rock alternative, but it had to stay recognizable as rock, to bring in an audience, to sustain a career and to meet industry demands.

About the Author Elliott O'Donnell (February 27, 1872 - May 8, 1965) was an Irish author known primarily for his books about ghosts. He claimed to have seen a ghost, described as an elemental figure covered with spots, when he was five years old. He also claimed to have been strangled by a mysterious phantom in Dublin. He claimed descent from Irish chieftains of ancient times, including Niall of the Nine Hostages (the King Arthur of Irish folklore) and Red Hugh, who fought the English in the sixteenth century. O'Donnell was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and later at Queen's Service Academy, Dublin, Ireland. In later life he became a ghost hunter. His first book, written in his spare time, was a psychic thriller titled "For Satan's Sake" (1904). From this point onward, he became a writer. He wrote several popular novels, including an occult fantasy, "The Sorcery Club" (1912) but specialised in what were claimed as true stories of ghosts and hauntings. O'Donnell wrote material for numerous magazines, including "Hutchinson Story Magazine, The Novel Magazine, The Idler, Weekly Tale-Teller, Hutchinson's Mystery-Story Magazine, Pearson's Magazine, Lilliput" and "Weird Tales". As he became known as an authority on the supernatural, he was called upon as a ghost hunter. He also lectured and broadcast (radio and television) on the paranormal in Britain and the United States. In addition to his more than 50 books, he wrote scores of articles and stories for national newspapers and magazines.

I agree with the other reviews, as it was a bit cumbersome to read at times. I guess that comes from the writing style, as the book was first published in the early 1900's. If your interested in the legend and myth of werewolves this book is priceless. It hasn't been watered down by tons of hollywood or mainstream info. The chapter that actually tells you how to become a werewolf was great. If I can find some raw opium and a wolf skin belt I'm in business!!

By Nightshade This volume is of incredible value from both an historical perspective and from a study of lycanthropy world-view as well. Comprehensive. I would highly recommend it to anyone delving into this fascinating behavioral syndrome and the history attached to it. Originally published in 1912 (I believe), you will find it heavy to read now and then but the insights gained are worth the effort. Not a "neo-werewolf" volume! Don't bother if you think Oz on Buffy the Vampire Slayer defines werewolves.

By Wölfe This book, originally published in 1912, was written by a British genealogist and historian Elliot O'Donnell. The information gathered within this book comes from old legends and folk stories that have circulated in Europe. There is a brief mention of other shapechangers, like were-leopards, -tigers and -bears, but the book clearly centers around "werwolves".Most of the information is given in the form of stories and legends, they are a very interesting read. As you read the stories, you can notice how most of the stories have a moral to them, in the same way as fairytales tend to have. You can almost imagine how these stories have been told in the dark to scare children and to teach them things like not to be too vain and proud.The book also contains some information on specific topics, like on how to become a werewolf, what is the spiritual side of them and if exorcism would work on a werewolf. The book has different chapters for some countries, including places such as Germany, Spain, British Isles, France and Finland.I highly recommend this book for those interested in the old were-legends. The stories prevent it from being a dry read, even if the style of writing might sound a bit old. Highly recommended for those truly interested in werewolves!

" ... try to sound like you know what you're doing even when you don't" By Ginny "When the world goes to hell, make stuff up that sounds reasonable, talk faster, and try to sound like you know what you're doing even when you don't."Part fun read, part expose, all dead on honest look at what it's like to be an air traffic controller. The book does tell all - the good, the bad, and the stuff that is both all rolled up together. Dave has a twisted sense of humor and an easy going writing style that makes this book an engaging read.

An enlightening look at what goes into air traffic control, sometimes humorous, often times frightening. Not sure if knowing what goes on behind the scenes makes a person want to climb into an airplane. Mr. Larson's first hand account of what it takes to do the job is riveting, even to someone who knows nothing about planes or flying. A well written, entertaining read with a message.

Dealing with a partner's dementia is such a challenge, this book helps replenish some of the angst with a gentle, humorous approach. This is not a how-to book or an instructional guide, but I know I'll read a few pages to calm me down when I hit those frustrating moments.
