When Roman Gutierrez was eleven years old, his father died from a heroin overdose. Roman resolved, in his anger and his pain, that someday God would take him the same way. He became an addict, went to juvenile detention for stealing a year later, and attempted suicide the year after that. At fifteen he got into a fight and was pronounced dead for six minutes. At nineteen he was stabbed by his best friend and pronounced dead for five minutes. When Roman was twenty-five, he shot up all the heroin he had so his torment would end . . . and realized he didn’t want to die. That’s when a miracle occurred . . .

Training for and completing a triathlon is one of the most grueling life experiences anyone can have, requiring a degree of personal commitment, individual strength and iron will that few people possess. A true test of your ability to find, and then surpass your physical, mental and emotional limits, the only real analogue to triathlon…is the challenge of life itself.   In Finding Triathlon, professional athlete Scott Tinley explores the world inside and outside endurance sports, seeking answers to age-old questions. Part memoir, part cultural exploration, Tinley uses the language of sports to speak universal truths. Told through anecdotes, both personal and shared, with a critical, inquisitive, and often humorous interpretation of a life lived through the medium of sports, Tinley reflects on the sport of triathlon, honest competition, and the drive to improve ourselves as a whole, looking to understand how and why we live our lives.   Finding Triathlon is not a self-help book, and it’s not a fitness guide. Nor is it just about triathlons and triathletes. It’s about a lifestyle, a perspective, a way of looking at the world and its challenges, as you strive to better yourself and better understand yourself. Whether you’re training for the next big race or you’ve never run a mile in your life, Finding Triathlon speaks to the champion in each of us, demonstrating how making the decision to push ourselves to succeed in our dreams can affect our life, our world, and our future.

Finding Triathlon: How Endurance Sports Explain the World, by Scott Tinley

Review “Scott Tinley has penned a masterful, larger-than-life valentine to a sport that he long ago helped define via his own performance and panache, and in these pages, triathletes of all ages and abilities will find insight and wisdom creatively probing that one question deeply in need of answering: why tri?” —William R. Katovsky, Founder, Triathlete Magazine   “…one of the hardest working, winningest triathletes of all time.” —Slowtwitch.com   “… the ultimate multisport athlete.” —Triathlete Magazine   “His work ethic and consistency made him one of the most durable and feared triathletes of all time.” —Triathlete Magazine   "No one defined the free spirit and driving force of IRONMAN® like Scott Tinley." —Ironman.com

About the Author Scott Tinley is a former world-class professional athlete who has competed in over 400 triathlons, winning the IRONMAN® World Championship twice and the IRONMAN® World Series three times. Scott was inducted into both the Triathlon Hall of Fame and the IRONMAN® Hall of Fame upon retirement in 1999. He founded and developed the sport of off-road triathlon, and continues to co-own and manage the longest running off-road triathlon in the world. He has done television commentary for CBS, ESPN, and ABC; been a contributing writer for CBSNews.com; and written for Sports Illustrated, Men's Journal, Triathlete Magazine, and Outside Magazine. Scott lives near the beach in Del Mar, California and on a ranch west of Gaviota, California with his family.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The sport of triathlon represents a secure bunker of commitment, focus, and striving. It signifies much of the health and hopefulness seen in endurance sport. It is stylish, techy, challenging, and can enable such otherwise difficult-to-learn traits as self-confidence and control. But this triple-activity sport might also reflect the gluttonous 80s, the falsity of Regan’s trickle down, the aesthetics of neon, and the tragic glory of excess. Most of my friends who are private equity capitalists love triathlon. But this book isn’t about triathlon.  Finding Triathlon is an attempt to explain certain kinds of human behavior that are not yet made explicit by the growing popularity of endurance sports; it is an attempt to unpack our psychosocial environments through a scrutiny of endurance sports. This book asks many questions and, with any luck, will answer a few. Finding Triathlon is an effort to explain effort. Why the hell would well over a million people around the world willingly spend thousands of hours and  dollars, jeopardize jobs, marriages, essential health and wellbeing, all in preparation for a day of suffering? Are triathlons and endurance sports a new kind of religion? A marriage of spiritual materialism?Material spiritualism?  Consider that in recent years nascent endurance sports have had less bearing on the decadent look-at-me body types found in other sports than some quest for something ephemeral and intangible. Endurance sports, we are led to believe, is of a higher plane than say, soccer or fishing or ice hockey. And triathlon, we are told, is where you’ll find the Grail.   But where do ideas emulate that suggest running 26.2 miles is better for your soul and your social life than a Sunday morning game of hoops or your Thursday bowling league? Have endurance sports been over-sold to us? Mythologized by mass media? Offered as purple Kool-Aid by the already-hooked? Sports such as swimming, cycling, running, hiking, paddling—heck, anything that goes on for hours and days and weeks—can fall into the endurance sports category. And they ain’t going away. So, why not try to make sense of their place in our hearts, minds, and bodies? What is it about triathlon, and the emerging endurance sport phenomenon, that suggests some larger shift in our social worlds? That helps to explain the nuances of first world choices that might or might not have any bearing on any betterment of mankind? That would seem, in another time and period, evidence of the pure lunacy of the participants? Why, in God and  Pele’s name, would tens of thousands dream of racing across the barren lava fields of West Hawaii in scantily-shod skin; scorched meat, balls and boobs straining against spandex and for what? To transform yourself (as the announcer promises) from John Q. Public to a finisher of a full distance triathlon?  More questions than answers. ***There was a period where I took triathlon for granted—my smooth, wide bike-lane of a life rolled past a SoCal coastline, sunshine on the back of my neck, training partners listening to my same boring stories. But the quest for the greatness had gotten too close to the reality that I wasn’t. Still, the shadow of illusion had created its own cooling effect. Many of us need to get out of the tepid heat of our own everydayness. A little well-orchestrated self-subversion can’t be all bad, can it? This morning I was preparing for my two mile run. That’s right, two miles—one out, one back. But it started to rain and I couldn’t find an umbrella. That’s right, an umbrella. But that’s a bad lie. And before I kicked the dog and swore that someone had brewed decaf and generally became again that rock upon which I’d broken myself again and before I sabotaged a joyful twenty minutes tramping around in the mud, I reminded myself that it is good to be beset with the harder ironies of life.Somewhere, I convinced myself, Sisyphus must be happy. If I believe that I can be okay with two miles, then I willingly dodge the antiseptic training pressures that have colonized other multisport hearts and minds. The reality is not that I don’t have time for three or the energy for four but that I only want to run two miles. An illusion would be that I needed to run more for the wrong reasons. For today, the Quest and the Illusion had brokered a climate of physical glasnost and joined forces in the sweet irony that if I changed my mind, I would and could go ten. Or twelve. Multisport is just that; a multiplicity of options.  If the idea of a triathlon allows us to dream big and go short, to ride fast downhill and walk up the other side, so be it.  We might lower our flags to our fears but that doesn’t mean that they have beaten us. Only that our ship is not sunk. To strive for something, to really go after it without the mediation of Dig-Me-Beach-Nightmares or faux Kona-ifications is to be organically honest with yourself. That kind of mythic-rooted quest has sustained personal and spiritual campaigns since the Grail was more than the subject of a popular play. And Illusion, well, that’s the malleable, incongruous entity that can sneak up on us and commit determination’s perfect murder. Most of us endurance athletes have taught ourselves the difference between that map and that territory; we know how to lie to our legs when it counts in the race standings but lie prostrate to  our worldly partners when it doesn’t. Self-deceit in sport is only a crown of thorns when you allow your own blood to blur your vision. ***I like endurance sports for the same reasons that Steinbeck liked Cannery Row; for the “tin and iron and rust and splintered wood, chipped pavement and weedy lots.” But also for its ability to let us both dream and get caught sleeping in. I don’t like the illusion of the body politic as much as I like the drone of an angry peloton. The truth is that quadriceps and mammary glands wax and wane, but the momentary bliss of a true sporting experience is forever. It’s been argued by any number of critical thinkers that sport is a necessary catharsis in the human species, that the competitive instinct is innate, and without sport our society would run the risk of devolving as man seeks other less desirable forms of conflict and test. And while I don’t necessarily believe this is absolute, I know that as imperfect as sport can be, it’s a hell of a lot better than war. While there may be evidence enough to support the thesis that we are born with a competitive gene, there is ample data to deny it as well. Certainly there are cultures that are much less competitive than North America and Western society. Tibetan monks living in mountaintop monasteries rarely race to the dinner table in order to secure the chunkiest parts of the day’s soup. But for those of us born and raised in this breaking millennium with material comforts aplenty, we appear to be creating and then challenging unnecessary obstacles. Is it for the sake of bettering ourselves or others as we hurdle these ubiquitous gauntlets? A kind of DIY Darwinism? Or is it simply about having some fun? What is a game of golf without a wager? A nice soak in the spa without seeing who can hold their breath under water the longest? Doing your nails in record time while keeping the polish off your fingers? The first to one place, the fastest to another—on it goes. So could it be that these self-imposed challenges are more than a part of this sporting life and this frenetic environment? That they are a part of how we reduce the monotony in our daily world? It seems to me that the minor contests we invent have become a physical lexicon of sorts, something that prescribes our identity in the judgment of somatic performance—our bodies telling us who we are by what they can do.Years ago, my brother Jeff, the great triathlete, Mark Allen, and I found ourselves in Paris for a few days near the end of a long season of triathlon racing. Standing at the base of the Eiffel Tower one day, a gorgeous morning laying out beyond us, it had to happen—someone said let’s race to the top. At the time it seemed perfectly natural, a way to spice up our climb, to validate our fitness, to push each other simply because we could. Of course, if that were to occur now, I’d blame it on the third espresso or second vin ordinaire and lie down in the grass until the madness had passed. Or perhaps we weren’t mad. Just young. The difference is in knowing the difference. And how it affects our physical and social worlds. —Excerpt from the Prologue by Scott Tinley

Terwilliger I really wanted to give a good review given the author's athletic accomplishments. Unfortunately the writing is - at best - a stream of consciousness colloquially of the author's perspective on politics and mocking of others for whom he disagrees. A depressing read.

Excerpt from French-English Medical DictionaryThe wealth of scientific information which French medicine has to offer can properly be grasped by those who are able to be in constant touch with the literature in its original language. The monumental work of the individual investigators in each chosen specialty is overwhelming by its profound erudition. The accumulated data during the recent war prove amply that the power of observation in its accuracy and precision as revealed by French scientists deserves special attention. To those who are willing to follow up closely the progress in French medicine in the original writings the present Dictionary is offered. Moreover, those who since the cessation of hostilities have decided to continue the study of the language will find in the Dictionary a means of learning its proper pronunciation. Each French word is accompanied by a combination of letters in English giving the pronunciation as accurately as possible. On a separate page a key for the latter is added and should be consulted frequently. Finally on the last page a table is presented showing measurements in the metric system corresponding to that used in United States.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. All Men Are ASSHOLES, All Women are BITCHES: A Humorous Look at the Differences Between Men and Women, by Judie Jewel

About the Author Judie Jewel is a retired educator, not a psychologist, anthropologist, nor marriage counselor. Her credentials in the relationship world come, instead, from the school of hard knocks with two divorces and three marriages under her belt. Growing up as an only child, books were a constant companion and as she grew, her love for print did too. But she would not write her first book until she was in her late 50’s—All Men Are Assholes, All Women Are Bitches. Judie is the wife of co-author, Dan Dourson, proud mother of three children, Austin, Angie and Tyler, as well as grandmother of four grandchildren. She divides her time between the USA and Central America with Dan. This book was a collaboration with Dan Dourson and Jacob Marlin, providing the male perspective to this delicate subject.

No matter what mood you're in, it will put you in a good mood. What a great personality the author has. I want to have lunch with her. The analogies are dead on. This is not a man hater book. The author pokes good fun at both sexes. If you're easily offended, don't read this book but if you have a personality it is a definite MUST read for adults with a sense of humor.

Auditing and GRC Automation in SAP, by Maxim Chuprunov

From the Back Cover

Over the last few years, financial statement scandals, cases of fraud and corruption, data protection violations, and other legal violations have led to numerous liability cases, damages claims, and losses of reputation. As a reaction to these developments, several regulations have been issued: Corporate Governance, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, IFRS, Basel II and III, Solvency II and BilMoG, to name just a few. In this book, compliance is understood as the process, mapped not only in an internal control system, that is intended to guarantee conformity with legal requirements but also with internal policies and enterprise objectives (in particular, efficiency and profitability).

The current literature primarily confines itself to mapping controls in SAP ERP and auditing SAP systems. Maxim Chuprunov not only addresses this subject but extends the aim of internal controls from legal compliance to include efficiency and profitability and then well beyond, because a basic understanding of the processes involved in IT-supported compliance management processes are not delivered along with the software. Starting with the requirements for compliance (Part I), he not only answers compliance-relevant questions in the form of an audit guide for an SAP ERP system and in the form of risks and control descriptions (Part II), but also shows how to automate the compliance management process based on SAP GRC (Part III). He thus addresses the current need for solutions for implementing an integrated GRC system in an organization, especially focusing on the continuous control monitoring topics.

Maxim Chuprunov mainly targets compliance experts, auditors, SAP project managers and consultants responsible for GRC products as readers for his book. They will find indispensable information for their daily work from the first to the last page. In addition, MBA, management information system students as well as senior managers like CIOs and CFOs will find a wealth of valuable information on compliance in the SAP ERP environment, on GRC in general and its implementation in particular.

About the Author

Maxim Chuprunov is CEO of Riscomp GmbH – a consultancy focusing on the automation of GRC management processes. Prior to this, he worked for KPMG, Schenker AG, and SAP AG. During his career, he has continuously been involved in auditing of SAP applications, data analysis, designing Internal Control Systems, and with the implementation of SAP ERP systems as well as the SAP solutions for GRC. In this book, he has applied his extensive knowledge of both underlying legislation and legal standards and the technical options for implementation.

Fish in the Dark is the astonishing playwriting debut by Larry David, the multiple Emmy-winning star of Curb Your Enthusiasm and co-creator of Seinfeld. This sidesplitting play, a testimony to David’s great writing talent, is also his first time on Broadway—in fact, his first time acting on stage since eighth grade. In Fish in the Dark Larry David stars as Norman Drexel, a man in his fifties who is average in most respects except for his hyperactive libido. As Norman and his family try to navigate the death of a loved one, old acquaintances and unsettled arguments resurface with hilarious consequences.Fish in the Dark has its world premiere at the Cort Theatre on Broadway on March 5, 2015, starring Larry David.

Fish in the Dark: A Play, by Larry David

Review “Forgive us: we’re having difficulty curbing our enthusiasm about this.”—Time“Every word out of [Larry David’s] mouth is funny . . . Instead of sticking to a conventionally constructed plot, this Fish swims from one comic situation to another.”—Variety“You don’t need to be a fan of David’s hit TV series to appreciate zingers, which come laced with cultural clichés . . . These are just people, often very obnoxious people, lurching through lives and oddball dilemmas.”&mdashNew York Daily News (4 stars)“[Fish in the Dark] is no four-person, politically correct, plotless amusement, like so many comedies today, but a large ensemble piece with eighteen speaking roles, a perfect second-act twist, and a solid last-minute kicker . . . David’s humor is observational, questioning meaning and motives in the abstract.”—Vulture“Fish in the Dark may be new but its comic ingredients are classically aged . . . A night of huge, rolling laughs.”—Time Out (4 stars)

About the Author Larry David is an award-winning comedian, actor, and writer, as well as the cocreator of Seinfeld and the creator, producer, writer, and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm. His other television credits include Saturday Night Live and Fridays. Fish in the Dark is his first play.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pure irreverent Larry David By R. Stern Typical Larry David. I couldn't get to New York to see the stage play so this was second best for me. I felt like I was watching (listening), to a Seinfeld episode. I definitely could picture Larry's unconventional humor delivered with all it's irreverence.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "Why is it that after someone dies all of a sudden people decide to become honest?" By B. Wilfong If you are a fan of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” you will love “Fish in the Dark” as it is basically a longer episode of “Curb”. You will also instantly recognize and hear the Larry David “voice” in some of the dialogue and you will definitely hear Larry David’s line reading in some of Norman’s (Mr. David played him) dialogue in vintage Larry David fashion. Mr. David even goes so far (or low?) to include his catch phrase “pretty pretty pretty pretty good” in the text. It is cheap, but it is giving the audience what it wanted, so I can’t quibble with it.“Fish in the Dark” features a protagonist (Norman) who is a decent guy whose attitude and inability to let things go sometimes gets in his way making him look the bad guy. For fans of Mr. David this theme is very familiar. The play opens with the impending death of Norman’s father, and ends with the somewhat happy resolution that a death in the family can sometimes bring about. The play is very funny and would be hilarious in performance combined with the funny script and the stage business that a talented cast would bring to the text. It would be very enjoyable to see onstage, and as a read it is very quick. I read it in one day and did not realize I was plowing through it.The ending of “Fish in the Dark” is a little too tidy and it is abrupt. It seems to come out of nowhere. There are lots of subplots that get too quickly resolved or ignored altogether. It reminds you that if Mr. David were not the author this piece would have had some work done on it out of town before it premiered on Broadway. But that is minor. If you enjoy a funny and fast paced play then you will enjoy reading “Fish in the Dark.”

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Uninspired / Not impressive By Louis Todd Morelli Unfortunately, it was NOT impressive.I saw this a few weeks a ago while Larry David was still playing the lead. I generally like Larry David and found him extremely funny and entertaining in Curb Your Enthusiasm (his sitcom), but I found this production to be completely uninspired. I think what most people enjoyed was Larry David's signature expressions and sayings and seeing it live. However, these fleeting moments did not compensate for the strained entertainment value.

A powerful anthem for the youth of World War One that offers a compassionate look at war and its devastating effects. Adapted from Pat Barker's Booker Prize-nominated novel.Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers, has been tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches, yet under Sassoon’s influence, has become tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine.Produced to mark the centenary of the outbreak of WWI, Regeneration opened at the Royal & Derngate, Northampton, in August 2014, before embarking on a national tour co-produced by Touring Consortium.Nicholas Wright’s plays include the acclaimed National Theatre adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, Mrs Klein, Travelling Light and Vincent In Brixton, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2003. His writing about the theatre includes Changing Stages: A View of British Theatre in the Twentieth Century, co-written with Richard Eyre.'[a] superb stage version of a work of genius... gutting and unmissable' - Independent'shocking, tender and grimly funny... gently breaks your heart' - The Times'deeply moving... Regeneration, by Pat Barker

Amazon.com Review Regeneration, one in Pat Barker's series of novels confronting the psychological effects of World War I, focuses on treatment methods during the war and the story of a decorated English officer sent to a military hospital after publicly declaring he will no longer fight. Yet the novel is much more. Written in sparse prose that is shockingly clear -- the descriptions of electronic treatments are particularly harrowing -- it combines real-life characters and events with fictional ones in a work that examines the insanity of war like no other. Barker also weaves in issues of class and politics in this compactly powerful book. Other books in the series include The Eye in the Door and the Booker Award winner The Ghost Road.

From Library Journal In 1917, decorated British officer and poet Siegfried Sassoon wrote a declaration condemning the war. Instead of a court-martial, he was sent to a hospital for other "shell-shocked" officers where he was treated by Dr. William Rivers, noted an thropologist and psychiatrist. Author Barker turns these true occurrences into a compelling and brilliant antiwar novel. Sassoon's complete sanity disturbs Dr. Rivers to such a point that he questions his own role in "curing" his patients only to send them back to the slaughter of the war in France. World War I decimated an entire generation of European men, and the horrifying loss of life and the callousness of the government led to the obliteration of the Victorian ideal. This is an important and impressive novel about war, soldiers, and humanity. It belongs in most fiction collections.- C. Christopher Pavek, National Economic Research As socs. Lib., Washington, D.C.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews In this fact/fiction hybrid, Barker (Union Street, 1983, etc.) turns from the struggle for survival of northern England working- class folk to the struggle back to sanity by British officers unhinged by WW I trench warfare. Craiglockhart War Hospital, a grim psychiatric facility outside Edinburgh, is the setting. The framework is the arrival of Siegfried Sassoon at Craiglockhart in the summer of 1917, and his discharge back to France in November. Sassoon is treated by the eminent neurologist (and Army captain) William Rivers, whose job is to restore his damaged warriors to fighting condition. Sassoon is a relatively easy assignment. Despite his public statement protesting the war, Sassoon is no pacifist; this complex poet feels at home in the Army and is an exceptionally courageous officer, beloved by his men, to whom he feels a blood-debt that can be paid only by his return. For all the sparring between Sassoon and Rivers, only a hair separates them, for the latter is also a man of enormous integrity, profoundly troubled by the horrors his patients must endure. And it is these horrors (not the clipped exchanges of Sassoon and Rivers) that linger in the mind: Burns's vomiting nightmares caused by a mouthful of decomposing German flesh; Prior's being rendered mute after handling a human eye. At the center is Rivers, a model therapist, whose unstinting support may give even the wretched Burns a chance at a normal life. Barker has also provided some workmanlike off-base romance for Prior, her one developed fictional character; but the heart of the work, where the big fish swim, is Rivers's consciousness, his insights into front- line behavior enriched by his anthropological straining. Don't look here for the dramatic sweep of a war novel; instead, you get a scrupulously fair reconstruction of Craiglockhart, plus a moving empathy for both doctors and patients. The extent of that empathy earns Barker's work a place on the shelf of WW I literature. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A thoroughly human experience By mrovich Having read the entire trilogy fairly recently, I find it hard to distinguish between the first book alone and the complete work. However, Regeneration itself does stick out by being the most well-researched and well-informed of the three. I presume that many people have heard about Sassoon's 1917 public objection to the way the war was being waged, which caused him to be put under the supervision of Dr. Rivers - but I had not before reading this novel. The incident was so fascinating that I have since read further about Sassoon, Rivers and the war experience for those who suffered from neurasthenia - all of which reading has confirmed what I initially suspected, that Barker's novel, as well as being exceptionally well-written, insightful and moving, is also extremely true to events and situations. For the benefit of the "novel"-reading world, a fictional "hero" is added, whose life continues in tandem with Wilfred Owen's into the next two books; yet even he, Billy Prior, is more a composition deriving from real soldiers' experiences than the imagination. Not to say that Barker does not apply her creativity to the full - in her descriptive style, and in stringing together of the various lives she is describing. She has insight into character which is both moving and important - it reminds us that beyond the cliches of tragedy lay a very human, normal and mostly dull war, whose effects were nevertheless all-encompassing and disruptive.

A thoroughly moving book By Joe Copping Having just finished reading "Birdsong" I felt compelled to read more about a period of time that is moving out of living memory. I think "Regeneration" is a superb book that is well written, well researched and moving. I think books like this are so important because we should not be allowed to forget what the people of that time went through and we should not be allowed to trivialise what the First World War did to human beings and how it broke the seemingly Golden Age that had developed throughout Victorian and Edwardian England. I think the novel helps to honour the memory of the people who gave their lives in the war over something they did not understand or comprehend. The book is not just about war as it goes far deeper in helping to explain humanity, gender, class and truth. "Regeneration" is a disturbing and thought provoking book which people should read firstly because it is a good book and secondly becuase it will ensure that you do not forget what the people of the time and especially the soliders went through. They were caught up in a war of industrial proportions and were caught up in a war that they did not understand and we should forever hold them in high regard and in our memories. Afterall, in one month in 1917 there were 104,000 casualties in the war. Sacrifice like that deserves and should be remembered. From a literary point of view, this book is superbly crafted and is an original work of fiction with a good story. It is energetic and highly readable and I recommend it to anyone.

A fine philosophical novel, but not for the average reader By Dave Deubler This first book in Barker's WWI trilogy is based on the real-life treatment of poet Siegfried Sassoon by psychiatrist and anthropologist Dr. William Rivers at Craiglockhart War Hospital. Sassoon has publicly denounced the war as a "senseless slaughter" and refuses to fight anymore. The powers that be assign him to Rivers' care as a victim of "shell shock" - a traumatic experience that leaves men unable to function. The hospital's aim is not so much to cure as to return men to active duty - an objective that leaves Rivers conflicted as doctor and a humanitarian. In an era when treatment of mental illnesses was often barbaric, (as in a memorable scene near the book's conclusion), Rivers' treatment plan is to cure with compassion and respect for the patient. He allows these men the freedom to work through their experiences instead of repressing them. In doing so, he takes some of their suffering onto himself, and is changed in the process. The give and take between doctor and patient is the real meat of the story. But beyond the plot, there's a lot to think about in this novel. In fact, the real genius of this work is not the plot or the characters or the setting, but rather the seemingly endless array of serious ethical questions that crop up as these men struggle with their situations. Was Britain justified in going to war against Germany? Can war ever be moral? Who is responsible for the actions of nations? Do soldiers abdicate their moral responsibilities when they don the uniform? How can a doctor cure a patient's infirmity only to send him back to the front lines to die? How does this apply to conscientious objectors? Is it enough to treat symptoms when the underlying causes are psychological? Barker doesn't provide answers, but wants us to look for them in ourselves. This would be a terrific book for teaching an ethical philosophy course, and surely that's why this novel is so highly praised by reviewers. However, as an entertainment, this book is substantially less successful. One patient's brief dalliance with a factory girl provides almost our only glimpse of a woman, and even this episode seems tacked on, and is decidedly unromantic. And as one might expect, there is absolutely no trace of humor in this book at all - no one ever cracks a smile, let alone a joke. Less predictably, there's very little action in this book, either. The patients' tales of horrors at the front are powerful enough, but rarely run more than a page or two, and we don't get many of those. So while this is indeed a brilliant work of fiction, it should only be recommended to those who are deeply into ethical philosophy.

Abit disappointed as the recommendations are traditional By Amazon Customer Abit disappointed as the recommendations are traditional, nothing fantastic and like 'you don't say' type of result. And not sure if the trials that leads to the recommendations are updated. in that case, i would prefer to update via journals and not through books. if you have extra cash, may well invest in the journals.

By Ronald Sims Interesting, well-organized, and clearly written; faithful to the tenets of evidence-based medicine; however, the guidance for choosing a treatment is limited, since the recommendations are conservative and strictly evidence-based. I did not keep it.

Couples in distress enter therapy holding two goals that they now experience as mutually exclusive: to feel loved and to feel understood. Toni Herbine-Blank’s powerful new brand of couple therapy, Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO), offers a comprehensive conceptual map for achieving both goals. In a tour de force of elegant case illustrations wrapped around clear instruction, this book shows the IFIO therapist working with the natural subdivisions – or parts – of the human mind in a dyad, guiding and supporting couples to understand how they project childhood injury into current relationships and then, feeling threatened, frustrated and angry, lose track of their underlying needs to feel safe, connected and loved. With a focus on generating internal attachment stability to sustain each partner through the moments when the other is unavailable, couples in IFIO therapy reconnect with their essential needs, change their conversations and learn to make requests that invite rather than threaten in order to get those needs met.

Review

"Take a journey with Toni Herbine-Blank and her co-authors into couple therapy from the perspective of Internal Family Systems therapy. Follow the detailed illustrations of a master IFS clinician as she helps couples move from content to process and discover new ways to be incisive and positive in your response to interlocking defenses. Make your therapy more revealing, compassionate and collaborative with her way of doing intrapsychic work in the presence of the partner. And, especially important, learn to accept the inevitable countertransference challenges that arise when you work with your toughest couples." Ellyn Bader, PhD, founder/director of The Couples Institute.

"Toni Herbine-Blank brilliantly expands the IFS model by adapting it to couples therapy. With detailed, moving case illustrations she and her co-authors lead the reader step by step through the actual process of parts work done inside a relationship. Protectors relax, exiles unburden. The relationship itself unburdens. Both a practical guide and a comprehensive conceptual map, readable, clear, and compelling, Intimacy From The Inside Out will be a classic." Terrence Real, bestselling author of The New Rules of Marriage

From the foreword:

"This book takes a topic of immense complexity―how the two internal systems of a couple collide with each other to produce the rigid patterns that drive them toward dissolution―and in simple, clear language makes it understandable. Along the way, it offers time-tested techniques for helping each partner drop their weapons, focus inside and speak to each other from a different place―the Self. When couples are able to do this, each partner invariably develops new insight and also discovers that speaking from the Self on behalf of (rather than from) both protective and vulnerable parts produces an entirely different response from the partner." Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, LMFT, is a lecturer on psychology at Harvard Medical School, a licensed marriage and family therapist, fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and creator of the Internal Family Systems model.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A must read for all couple therapists By Cathy Curtis This is a powerful and profound book. It is a guide into the world of couple work that is simple, clear, easy to read, and compelling.Toni and her co-authors present the reader with a therapy concept and then show how to use it through written dialog from actual sessions. These sessions show Toni to be a compassionate, direct clinician who skillfully helps her clients into difficult or often hidden terrain. The book shows how this work leads to healing in each individual and in the couple and it clearly lays out the steps of how to achieve this. Reading this book has already benefited my work with couples. I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. cogently and with great insight into the complexity of working with couples By BB Loving this book! Toni and her co-authors present the material clearly, cogently and with great insight into the complexity of working with couples. The book is extremely well written making it easy to connect theory with practice and many helpful, practical tips. A great guide for therapists working with couples or individuals working with relationship issues.

Highly Recommended and Easy to Follow Read on Working with Couples By John Palmer Well written and easy to follow manual on applying Internal Family Systems Therapy to working with couples. One of the things I liked best is that Toni, et. al. operationalize the steps in working with couples in an easy to follow manner. They guide you through the processes of joining with the couple, tracking the couple dance, and helping the couple get underneath their protective covers and connect with their needs and vulnerabilities which allows for improved communication and relational healing. I was very impressed with the authors' perspective on shame and how to understand its affects on the couple's relationship. They describe shame as a two part process with both a shamer and the shamed--but not just between partners but also happening within each partner! I've been working with couples for 20+ years and this book is one of the best I've read. Even if you are unfamiliar with the Internal Family Systems model of therapy, I suspect this book will still deepen your understanding on working with couples and it will provide you with the tools needed to guide you through the treatment process.
