In the United States, immigrants need help to understand their immigration options. As a result, I decided to write a book that is simple to read and easy to implement and hopefully will help to keep many families together by assisting them in obtaining their legal status. This book gives examples of many common mistakes that immigrants make and shines light on the consequences of those mistakes. It is a summary of the most important questions and answers that every immigrant should know in order to avoid deportation and avoid repeating the costly, and sometimes tragic, mistakes of others. There is a “Path to Freedom” and by reading this book you are putting yourself and your family on the legal path to happiness in the United States.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A few transcription errors and the epub format is odd By Heather Hoag Sam Smith has such a beautiful voice, and I have about the same vocal range as him, so I had to get the sheet music. I feel I should have bought the physical copy, though. The staves themselves are picture files, while the titles and copyright info are text. This makes the page format...interesting. I managed to print the pages I needed, but even when I adjusted the font size to prevent every other page from being blank (which is what happens with the standard font size), it changed it back when printing. The titles are now HUGE. I have a lot of pages with just the last copyright line at the top. I obviously reused them. If you're just reading it from a Kindle or iPad, it's great. But if you want a physical copy, I'd suggest buying the physical copy. One more observation: Some of the measures are wrong. For example, the piano line for "I feel we're close enough" in "Latch" has one long chord. However, in listening to the song, that measure progresses just as you'd assume, with the same rhythm as the rest. The chord progression in that stanza is also incorrect. The entire song consists of the same 4 basic chords. This isn't a glaring issue, just something to think about. Another example is "Not In That Way". The refrain is supposed to begin with a Bb, but it's printed as a D. Playing a D just sounds wrong. This is a minor issue, as there's only one note difference in the chords, and it's easy to just remember to change it.Bottom line: read the music while listening to the song. Or learn the sheet music and compare it with the song. It's easy to point out the errors and fix them, if you have any piano or guitar training. I would still recommend this to ANYONE who wants to play these songs. The album is beautiful in every way.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Why do they mix the melody in with the accompaniment? By Amazon Customer I don't understand why you would mix the vocal line in with the piano accompaniment. You already have the vocal stave. So now I have to remove the vocal part and guess in some cases whether some of the notes would have been included if they were to have provided a true piano accompaniment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sam Smith is fabuloso By Amazon Customer Great piano music! I'd say this is harder music, as I wanted the easy piano version, and this was not it. lol However, if you're like me, and you can play, but you're not a virtuoso, the guitar chords are there, so you can play the chords with your left and the rhythm with your right. That works out just fine. Also a bonus is if you have the actual cd, it's all in the same key, so you can play right along with the book, and it's in the same order.Love you, Sam Smith.

Antigonick (New Directions Paperbook), by Anne Carson

Review “She is one of the few writers writing in English that I would read anything she wrote.” (Susan Sontag)“Carson is nothing less than brilliant―unfalteringly sharp indiction, audacious, and judicious in taking liberties.” (Publishers Weekly)“Reading Anne Carson is to experience aeuphonious, mystical sort of perplexity.” (Richard Bernstein - The New York Times)“Her poetry is light, swift, and beautiful.” (The New Yorker)“The reader, the listener is provoked and challenged to the utmost.” (The Times Literary Supplement)“It is a cry of grief posed in question form, emphatic, handwritten, excessive and abbreviated and, in this sense, a measured scream that gives us some sense of who or what lives on when it is all too late.” (Judith Butler - Public Books)“Ms. Carson does more than just update the language and quicken the pacing–she rewrites the play, mines its subtleties, its absurdity and its strangely comic timing and manages to produce a unique text out of a story that goes back much further than the fifth century when Sophocles wrote his version.” (The Guardian)“

A beautiful, bewildering book, wondrous and a bit scary to behold, that gives a reader much to think about without making it clear how she should feel.

” (Slate)“Antigonick plays extensively with the conventions of narrative form, translation, and the physical presentation of literature.” (The Rumpus)“Antigonick is as much a re-telling as it is a testament to the importance of Antigone in Western art, of re-tellings, and of refiguring narrative.” (Critical Mob)“Her poetry is expressionistic (you see this in Antigonick), shot through with a spiritual turbulence and an almost violent sensitivity to experience, and the barbed edges of her lines can send shocks through you.” (Full Stop)“Antigonick has arrived at the right cultural moment.” (The New Inquiry)

About the Author Anne Carson was born in Canada and teaches ancient Greek for a living at New York University. Her awards and honors include the Lannan Award, the Pushcart Prize, the Griffin Trust Award for Excellence in Poetry, a Guggenheim fellowship, and the MacArthur “Genius” Award. She is the author of Nox; Glass, Irony and God; The Autobiography of Red; The Beauty of the Husband; Decreation; Economy of the Unlost; Eros the Bittersweet; Grief Lessons; If Not, Winter; Men in the Off Hours; and Plainwater.

20 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Interesting but puzzling By Jon Corelis It's difficult to decide what audience this book is aimed at. It is really three books in one: a English language version of Sophocles' Antigone by Anne Carson, a designed book (non-standard, artistic layout, paper, binding, printing) by Robert Currie, and a book of illustrations by Bianca Stone. Though each aspect of the book considered in itself is well and professionally done, the three don't really seem to gel. The book is handsomely produced, to be sure, especially considering its reasonable price, but I found the design distracted from the text and kept wishing I were reading a plain, standard font -- somehow the stylized, hand-printed letters made it difficult for me to visualize the play in performance. The illustrations are of good quality and excellent reproduction, but they seem to have only a vague, and often not even that, relation to the text. Maybe the idea is for the illustrations to work against expectation by not meeting the reader's expectations of what illustrations should do, reflecting the way the text works against the reader's expectations of what a translation of Sophocles should be; if so, I for one found that the technique didn't work. As for the translation, it's an interesting experiment in using a diction radically different from the standard "translationese" to engage the audience's interest and to breathe new life into the text. In this aspect, and occasionally even in its style, it's reminiscent of Ezra Pound's Sophokles: Women of Trachis. I don't know if Anne Carson has read that book, but I wouldn't be surprised if she had, especially since it is published by the same publisher. Though Antigonick can be called only a very free translation, the reader familiar with the Greek text will notice that, like Pound's version, it has a closer relationship to the original than might at first appear. The language of the translation is vivid, even racy, and will certainly engage a modern audience, though there are some mis-steps, or things which may or may not be mis-steps: for instance, Antigone's address to Ismene as "O one and only head of my sister ..." has an ineluctably comic effect for those who remember Housman's parody of Aeschylus ("O suitably-attired-in-leather-boots head of a traveler ...") If the comic effect is unintentional, it's inept; if intentional, it's a joke few members of a contemporary audience are going to get. And does the author really intend the bathetic potential of the lines given to various chorus members at a particularly poignant juncture of the action: "Here comes Creon ..." "Dragging his ..." "Dragging his ..." "Dragging his what ..."? I'm all for working against expectation, but this seems rather over the top. Despite these strictures, I thought this version is worth reading and at its best (again like Pound) points the way to a form of poetic diction which can be an effective solution, or partial solution, to the notoriously intractable problem of presenting the mood of ancient tragedy to a modern audience. I'd be interested in seeing how a performance of it works. Recommendation: if this book were the standard text of the play alone, I'd probably give it four stars, and I'd recommend it for the text to people interested in ancient drama in modern translation. But as it is, my three star recommendation is for a book that seems less than the sum of its parts: three different good books which don't succeed in working together closely enough to make one excellent book.

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Simply Superb By Kevin Hill Not so much a translation as an interpretation. This is probably not for someone who is unfamiliar with Antigone. It is a very stylistic, aphoristic retelling of the tale for a contemporary audience, done in a radical style. The daughter of Oedipus and his mother-wife, Jocasta, Antigone comes into life with some baggage. When her brother Polynices declares war on Thebes, the city is defended by her other brother Eteocles. Both die and their uncle Creon declares that Eteocles shall receive a proper burial, while Polynices, a traitor, must lie unburied, to be eaten by birds and dogs. But Antigone believes leaving her brother unburied is so utterly wrong that she must break the law to bury him and be condemned to death herself. The print is in the form of Carson's own handwriting, with little or no punctuation, giving the tale a frantic, nervous feel. Bianca Stone's illustrations are a surreal assortment of images, printed on transparent pages that overlay the text, and which relate only occasionally to what is happening in the text. The result is delightful mixture of wit and irony. The characters of the play even comment on various interpretations that have been offered by Bertolt Brecht and G.W.F. Hegel. Carson is one of our literary treasures and this is Carson at her best.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Antigone Resonates in the Present Moment By JMB1014 "Antigonick," Anne Carson's new translation of Sophocles' tragedy, "Antigone," is verbally and visually striking. The book is printed with handwritten words in black and red ink, not necessarily in an orderly arrangement on the blindingly white pages but in irregular chunks, often with gaps. This invites you to read and often reconsider the text based on the unusual arrangement of the words. In some places, it's like reading a text without punctuation. Reading this way becomes an active process of construction of meaning. I think readers pay more attention when they are forced to interpret the text this way.Carson does not translate everything in the play. Another reviewer called her translation "aphoristic." That is accurate as far as it goes. It is also sometimes contemporary and slangy, making it immediate. I felt the action was happening next door or in the next room, not in a book written at a safe remove. At some places, her prose is simply exquisite - so abrupt and terse, so evocative, that you are yanked into thought, into feeling. Carson also interpolates discussion about Hegel, Virginia Woolf, and other more modern writers to illustrate or make the characters' ideas resonate with us in ways we might not have considered. Like the unusual breaking up of the text, the addition of other writers' ideas calls on us to think and consider the play from more perspectives than we might otherwise. There are many dimensions to Carson's version. When I got this book, I could not put it down. It demands attention. Certainly the illustrations may be ironic. Their subjects are sometimes surreal, sometimes merely quaint, sometimes just obscure. Again, however, the idea seems to be to jar the reader into contemplation.I read this alone at first, then along with two other, far more conventional translations of "Antigone." I got a lot out of this one and enjoyed it far more than the others.

I had a visual in my mind about each guy that the scenario reminded me of! The pictures go great with the situations in the book and it really hits home. I wish I had a copy of this book to just give to men I know. It was a short read and it definitely put a smile on my face. I wish the book was just a bit longer because it was so funny. I was disappointed when it ended. Seriously, go buy this book for yourself and a copy for the man in your life as a reminder of times when he needs to "Man The F Up."

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good. But it aimed for great, and missed. By Andrew Kuligowski A few years ago, a rather well-done take-off on a children's nighttime book became a sensation. “Go the F--k to Sleep” described a parent's disappointment with a child that was not dozing off at night. The verses each contained 4 lines, the first two in a lyrical description of the wonders of sleep, and the remaining two reflecting the mounting angst of the frustrated parent.“Man the F--k Up” is an attempt to tell a tale of frustration of an adult female over the actions of an adult male. The “verse” doesn't follow any consistent meter, and the “rhymes” usually do not pair words that truly rhyme. That, in and of itself, does not bother me. However, the fact that the author DOES attempt to use SOME sort of 4 lined verse, coupled with (loosely applied) rhyme, including the consistent use of the title phrase incorporating a well-known vulgarity feels just TOO derivative. I have to wonder if the author could have made her point with something that had less of a look-and-feel of the prior work. (And, before you ask, no, it did not feel like parody – rather, like some marketing hack wanted to piggyback on someone else's earlier success.)The illustrations were quite well done and appropriate – I wish the artists had opted to identify themselves individually instead of under a collective. This book was good. It showed signs that it could have been very good.RATING: 3 1/2 stars, rounded to 3 stars.DISCLOSURE: This book was provided to me free of charge in a random draw, in the hopes (although not mandated or committed) for an honest and prompt review. (The author probably wishes it was a little less honest, but oh well ...)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was a little disappointed :( By Cindi Fornicola I had super high hopes for this one . It's not terrible it's just I was confused the picture didn't go w/ the words a couple of times . I love the concept and with the right tweaking I think you could have a best seller !!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Inside Look By B. J. Taylor This is a difficult book to rate. Do I base my rating on the writing quality? Or on whether the author got the intended message across? Since this is a nonfiction, I choose to go with the latter. This is the story of how the Suicide Crisis Centre in England got started. It is a bit unique in that the founder (and author) was a mental healthy patient at the time she founded the service.I was a suicide prevention crisis counselor for ten years so could really relate to this story. Joy writes of first responders who were poorly equipped to deal with suicidal people. She also tells of mental health professionals who had no idea how to deal with the suicidal people. They had no concept of how those with PTSD are prime for suicide ideation. But she also tells of those who were empathetic and compassionate. She encountered a lot of skepticism due to her being a mental health patient herself. I have to admit that I had a difficult time with that but tried really hard to withhold judgement. Her having been there herself, she understood the thought process. Hopefully she knew herself well enough to avoid dealing with those in crisis when she was in crisis herself. The center where I worked had a catastrophic event involving a counselor who had been seeing therapist. The counselor was cleared by his mental health provider to volunteer with us. However one of the callers pushed him over the edge and a tragedy took place. The book is poorly written. It is a relatively short book at only 150 pages but there are no chapter breaks. There was too much minutiae, in my opinion. Unless you are really interested in the topic you might give up on the book. But I thought she was very honest in her writing and really made the point of how poorly suicidal people reaching out for help are often treated.

Inspiring book about suicide By Angela Winters Suicide Crisis: The Story by Joy Hibbins is about Joy Hibbins and her experiences in the mental health department. This book highlights how so many people can fall through the cracks and the mistakes that government mental health services makes. However, during her trying times, she managed to put together the Suicide Crisis Center, which has worked and saved many clients lives. The struggle that she went through to get her charity up and going is amazing. With this book, I wish that we would have gotten more background on the situations that led to the problems that the author and the people in the book had went through to get them to that dark place. For someone who hasn't gone through anything like this, we can't fathom what led someone there. While I find the book interesting and inspiring in that Joy was able to overcome her mental health issues and to go on and help countless people, I wish that she would have went into more detailed descriptions, to many things in the book left me asking to many questions.Thank you for the read, this is a very compelling story!!

By Hilary Rawles This book is a true and a totally honest account of what can happen when someone is mentally ill in this country. So many people out there are suffering in silence, and Joy Hibbins has had the enormous courage to use the trauma that she has been through to help other people, in spite of the ridicule that apparently she has suffered from the powers that be in Gloucestershire..

‘LOST and PROFOUND: The Rejected Book Reviews by Famous People’ is a unique and hilarious collection of unpublished book reviews seemingly written by household names who have reached the top in film, television, journalism, science, music, sport, art, business, politics and literature. Included among the ‘reviewers’ are George W. Bush, David Letterman, Madonna, Gore Vidal, Shirley MacLaine, Arnold Palmer, Elton John, Gloria Steinem, David Suzuki, Walter Cronkite, Salvatore ‘Sammy the Bull’ Gravano, Jimmy Swaggart and Monica Lewinsky. All the books reviewed are real, and the astonishing diversity of interests of the celebrities demonstrates that shallow perception can never be disguised as deep thought, no matter how cleverly expressed. As revealed in the book’s ‘Introduction’, Mark McKirdy acquired this collection when he successfully bid for a small, dusty box at a Sotheby’s auction in 2013. Upon his return to Oxford University, where he was the anthropologist-in-residence, he opened the box and, like Howard Carter marveling at the treasures he’d just unearthed from Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the author was holding a golden collection of book reviews by many of the world’s most significant people. Each review had apparently been commissioned by the prestigious literary journal, ‘The London Review of Books’ and each, for reasons never revealed, received a soul-crushing rebuff by way of a large, red ‘Rejected’ stamp. As with all well written satire, ‘LOST and PROFOUND’ will give readers pause for thought, seconds for chuckling, minutes of laughing out loud and hours of fun, and if the celebrities mentioned in the book didn’t actually write the reviews cited, they probably wish they had.

By Robert Lalonde This book is a tongue in cheek compilation of fictitious book reviews by famous people. The tone is mischievous and irreverent at times, as you would expect from reviews that were rejected.A few examples are:• George Bush reviews The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Submarines• George Clooney reviews Asserting Yourself• Richard Dawkins reviews A Woman’s Account of The Afterlife• Gore Vidal reviews Lenin - A New BiographyLost and Profound is not a novel and it’s not something you would read cover to cover in one sitting. It’s the kind of book that is more suited to being picked up on occasion to read one or two reviews at a time, as light hearted entertainment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and I predict great things for this "scholarly" work. By Patrick Sean Lee I haven't yet read this book...I've yet to purchase it, but I will.I HAVE read Mr. McKirdy's Preview, and based on his outrageous character, and the Literary prose, I am compelled to give at least the Preview five glowing stars, and I predict great things for this "scholarly" work.Update, July 12, 2015. Now I have read the entire book. The author, not on my "Friends" list, kindly offered me a copy before I clicked "Buy". Fine.I honestly had to open the paperback with blinders on concerning what it MIGHT be about. The cover, first off. Very appealing when I glanced at it; the names of so many notable personalities (for lack of a better word) surrounding the image. Madonna? Jimmy Swaggart? THEY wrote reviews of books? Well, how would I really know? Monica Lewinski. Yo Yo Ma. Okay, I think this is going to be over-the-top tongue-in-cheek. Dive in and see, right?More than that it is. These (probably) phony compositions are not over-the-top. There is no top, so hilarious and outrageous they are. Lewinski's commentary, for instance, on Conason and Lyon's draft of the book they intend(ed) to publish, "The Hunting of The President". Clarification of the Cigar Incident in Monica's journalistic best effort."Bill looked at Hillary. Hillary looked at Bill. Al Gore looked at Hillary. Hillary looked at Tipper Gore. Tipper looked at me. I lit a cigar. Al smiled. Hillary lit a cigar. Al grinned. Tipper lit a cigar. Al lit a cigar. Oblivious to the showering sprinklers just triggered by the smoke, Bill lit two cigars. Cuba never had it so good." And further on at the end..."I should have followed Bill's advice and kept my mouth shut. It's a pity he didn't say that the first day we met."Another review "Rejected" by the journals.Over and over, McKirdy uses his not quite inimical voice to bring back memories, via rejected reviews, of the famous, the vain, the vapid, and the infamous personalities we so love, or love to hate. There are a few ho-hummers in the collection, but they are vastly outweighed and overpowered by the deliciously scandalous majority.I find myself, after having first received and read the book, going back in the quiet hours, when I am exhausted by the latest day's round of insanity in the news, and re-reading such as Monica Lewinski's review. I sleep well, with a HUGE grin on my face. 10 stars out of a possible 5 for this short classic-to-be.

Wounded Eagle is a story about what could happen to the United States when attacked by terrorist forces bent on total destruction of the American way of life. Although seriously wounded, America is slowly attempting to recover while continuing to combat terrorists and other unknown forces. Boston, Dallas, Denver, and several other major cities have suffered devastating losses. Nuclear warheads had been detonated in Boston and Denver resulting in the murder of many members of Congress, including the Speaker of the House, National Security Adviser, and countless others. President Mitchell is still recovering from his kidnapping and the death of his wife. While operating with limited staff and congressional support, he is doing his best to save his country, the United States, from total destruction. American blood has been spilled and the country wants revenge. Meanwhile, Davin Pierce and Josh Randal, two near-retiring CIA field operatives, are called in to assist in the recovery of a stolen, highly classified, portable hard drive containing information that could start World War III if the encryption was broken. With the assistance of some high tech equipment and trained agents from multiple organizations, Davin Pierce and Josh Randal dive head first into the search only to discover it went deeper than expected. Life in the slow lane of running covert operations from behind a desk has just changed lanes and gone ballistic.

About the Author Hello, I am D.A. McIntosh and I retired as a First Sergeant from the US Army and have been living and writing in Arizona for over 20 years. When I am not traveling, teaching graduate school or otherwise engaged in something useful, I write stories that I truly hope you enjoy reading and passing along to your friends. This Book 6 of the Chain of Deceit series is not the end; I have many more adventures lined up for our heroes. If you have not read the first five books, you can still start with this one and then read the others later to learn how events led up to this one. The title may be hard to pronounce but not to military historians; it is abbreviated SS. Hitler's elite defense force and his personal body guards and the murderers of millions.

Our country faces opposition on a daily basis. We never hear about most of it.

Shakespeare professor and prison volunteer Laura Bates thought she had seen it all. That is, until she decided to teach Shakespeare in a place the bard had never been before-supermax solitary confinement. In this unwelcoming place, surrounded by inmates known as the worst of the worst, is Larry Newton. A convicted murderer with several escape attempts under his belt and a brilliantly agile mind on his shoulders, Larry was trying to break out of prison at the same time Laura was fighting to get her program started behind bars. Thus begins the most unlikely of friendships, one bonded by Shakespeare and lasting years-a friendship that, in the end, would save more than one life.

Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary With the Bard, by Laura Bates

From Booklist From breaking out to breaking through, that’s what reading Shakespeare did for Indiana federal prison inmate Larry Newton, who was locked in solitary confinement for more than 10 years. His story is recounted by English professor Bates, who taught the “Shakespeare in Shackles” class that gave Newton, convicted of murder as a teenager, his new lease on life. Bates describes the program, but the core of the text is given over to Newton as he poses challenging questions from Shakespeare’s works about such topics as honor, revenge, and conscience, forcing prisoners to consider their own actions in a new light. Macbeth and Hamlet are the primary targets of examination, but the inmates take fresh approaches to several plays. The short chapters are like Bates’ glimpses into the cells through cuff boxes. It’s clear she is impressed with Larry, and while his work is remarkable, it’s also repetitive. But the journey he makes and the impact it has on Bates herself combine to form a powerful testament to how Shakespeare continues to speak to contemporary readers in all sorts of circumstances. --Bridget Thoreson

By Mary Lavers (in Canada) My first reaction when I saw this book was, "Great, EVERYONE is reading Shakespeare before I do. Even people in solitary confinement!" I'd recently decided to read all of Shakespeare's plays in a year and I was finding it slow going. But the prisoners that Laura Bates described in this book seemed to breeze through the plays, even if they had limited education and no previous knowledge of the bard. If they could do it, what the hell was my excuse?Once I got past my petty jealousy, this book spoke to me on a lot of levels. Laura Bates is an English professor who has been teaching Shakespeare for years, both in colleges and in prisons. This book recounts her experiences with the latter, particularly in a supermax--or solitary confinement--unit. A great number of my family members work in corrections, including in prisons, and I myself had helped start a writing and spoken word program at a women's prison here in Nova Scotia. So I didn't need to be convinced of the value of prisoner education. And, as I mentioned, I'd recently started a Shakespeare in a Year project in which I was attempting to read the Complete Works of Shakespeare (or at the very least the plays) before the end of the year. So I didn't need to be convinced of the value of Shakespeare.Still, this book surprised me in a lot of ways. The thing that struck me most about Laura Bates' experiences teaching Shakespeare in prison was the way the inmates interpreted certain passages. Dr. Bates deliberately chose plays she thought might speak to them, plays about crime (Macbeth) or imprisonment (Richard III) or loss of power (King Lear) or violence and revenge (Titus Andronicus). Even so, the inmates' reactions to them often changed the way I myself was reading the material. As an example, when discussing the murder of King Duncan in Macbeth, one part that often stumps literary critics is why Macbeth is able to kill Duncan but cannot seem to complete the plan by planting the bloody daggers on the sleeping guards, implicating them. He balks at this and wanders off, forcing Lady Macbeth to complete the task. Why? I, like many critics, interpreted Macbeth's actions as evidence of doubt, of lack of conviction to the plan. Lady Macbeth, by contrast, seems like the pushier of the two in this scene ("Fine! I have to do everything myself, do I?").But the inmates had a different interpretation:"'He needs for her to get her hands dirty too', said the new student in the group named Bentley...When Bentley made the observation about Macbeth's need for a partner in crime, the others, all serving time for murder convictions, agreed. It is easier to bear the burden of guilt, especially of such a heavy crime, my students said, with an accomplice.Genius.That not only changes how I feel about that scene, it changes how I feel about the relationship between Macbeth and his wife. Is Lady Macbeth really the mastermind who pushes her husband, unwillingly, into a series of murders? Or is Macbeth pulling his wife further into their crime spree so she shares his culpability? There are a lot of other examples of the inmates' interpretations of Shakespeare (the comparison of Titus Andronicus to Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is worth the price of admission alone) and they're all fantastic. Even if you got nothing else out of the book, these insights are more than worth the read.Keep checking this blog for an upcoming interview with the author and a chance to win a copy of the book!Disclaimer: I received a digital galley of this book free from the publisher from NetGalley. I was not obliged to write a favourable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Bukowsky Larry Newton is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole. He is also, according to the distinguished scholar David Bevington, "a serious person, gracious, good-humored, [and] alive with intellectual curiosity." Laura Bates is an English professor who earned her PhD from the University of Chicago. "Shakespeare Saved My Life" is Bates's remarkable account of her volunteer work in various correctional facilities, where she used the plays of William Shakespeare as a vehicle to broaden the convicts' understanding of themselves and the world. The impact of Shakespeare's works on Larry Newton was so powerful that he became an influential teacher, prepared detailed workbooks to help inmates study Shakespeare, and helped create videos to inform other inmates about the relevance of the Bard to their lives.Shakespeare's grasp of the nuances of human nature still resonates more than four hundred years after his plays were written and performed. Jealousy, ambition, and the desire for revenge can poison a person's soul; guilt has the power to corrode a person's mind. As Newton wisely points out in the quotation preceding this review, many of us unwittingly create our own prisons. Those who end up serving long sentences gave in to negative peer pressure, acted impulsively, and allowed ugly emotions to guide their actions. As a result, they forfeited their freedom and their chance to becoming productive members of society. In brief and lively chapters, Bates describes how she taught Shakespeare's works in "supermax," a long-term solitary confinement unit in Indiana. She also addresses controversial questions: Should the state pay for educational programs to rehabilitate criminals? Need we be concerned about the inhumane and unsanitary conditions that exist in some American prisons? Can we prevent juvenile offenders from become career criminals? In addition, Bates reveals the many insights she gained while working with Newton and his fellow convicts--not just into Shakespeare's words but also into her own capabilities. Professor Bates believes that each of us has untapped potential; even the most feared and despised members of society may have the desire and ability to soar beyond their prison walls.

Maybe I am too cynical to accept this at face value By retiredandlovinit As a retired English teacher and HS principal, I am conflicted about this book.On one hand, you can consider it a well-written piece of congratulatory non-fiction, detailing how college professor Dr. Bates brought her Shakespeare classes to Indiana prisons, including a supermax SHU (Segregated Housing Unit) to help rehabilitate the worst of the worst, most violent murderers, rapists and other felons through her efforts. Her star pupil is a 30-year-old killer named Larry Newton, who murdered a college student in an alley by shooting him in cold blood thirteen years ago, as the student was walking his girlfriend home from a party. Newton, who had gone through many forms of abuse as a child and spent large amounts of time in various juvenile detention systems for many offenses prior to the murder, pled guilty in exchange for a life sentence with no possibility of parole. He is in SHU due to several escape attempts including stabbing a guard, but Dr. Bates is able to reach the very bright Newton through detailed study of Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedies: Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello. Newton comes to see his own actions through a new light, and in turn reaches out to other prisoners and young offenders by writing student workbooks, leading discussion groups, and participating in prisoner-made video interpretations of the works. Following positive media coverage, Newton rises through the prison system, eventually returning to the general inmate population, all the while forming a strong emotional bond with the professor. At book's end, both seemingly are better people for knowing each other and being able to overcome their own individual "prisons" of the mind. And the budget-cutting state of Indiana has revoked the funding for such programs as these that provide free college classes for prisoners. On the other hand, you can consider this book as a textbook case of two people manipulating each other and the system to get what they want. Although Dr. Bates seems very sincere, even noble, in wanting to help these damaged felons, she glosses over her own reasons for subjecting herself to this dangerous environment, while admitting that she desperately wants to earn tenure at her university, and seems to bask in the positive publicity her efforts receive from her administrators and the media. And there is no doubt that murderer Newton benefits greatly from his participation in the Shakespeare activities, gaining personal acclaim and a return to the general prison population through his participation. Maybe he is now able to look back at his crimes and regret the decisions he made as a young man. But it is impossible to see within a person's heart to know what is real understanding and what is self-serving manipulation. Newton admonishes us to "remember that the person is not the crime" and that all of us suffer from our own bad decisions and internal prisons. But there is NO escaping the fact that a young college student was brutally murderered in an alley, just because a Newton and some buddies were cruising around looking for someone to attack. No rehabilitation or Shakespearean play will ever end that tragedy for his family. So is this a book you should read? Probably yes, but be prepared to have real mixed feelings about what transpires. There are valid points on both sides of the punishment vs. rehabilitation argument. But it would be interesting to find out other readers' reactions to the Mother's Day card and personal message Newton sends to the childless Dr. Bates towards the end of the book. Heartfelt thanks or master emotional manipulation? Tough to decide . . .

Excerpt from A Manual of Operative SurgeryIn the preparation of this third edition, it has been found necessary almost wholly to rewrite the book in order to note the important changes that have taken place during the last ten years in the planning and execution of many of the operations that have been preserved, to substitute others, and to make the numerous additions.Of the operations formerly in vogue, a number have been left out because they had their origin and found their usefulness only in conditions and dangers of the process of repair that arc now rarely met with, and others because superior substitutes have been introduced. The most important additions and modifications have been made in the surgery of the cranium and of the abdomen. To Dr. Rogers has fallen all the labor of collecting and making the descriptions, seeking and verifying references, obtaining the cuts and drawings, and of composition. He had my advice and assistance in the selection of subjects, and I revised the manuscript before publication and read all the proof.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lyons Shattered Pieces is a window and if you are brave enough to peer through it you will see family dysfunction and the horror that is sexual and physical abuse. I would not be surprised if the author were a bitter, angry, mad woman, after having endured this experience. But she is not. Vernetta is a strong, loving, gentle and kind lady with deep spiritual convictions. She is brave to share her story and to share the things that have helped her walk from darkness to light. I pray that this account will help many others do the same. It has certainly helped me.

This book addresses the rights of older persons from an international law and comparative law perspective. These chapters reflect the scholarly presentations which were presented at The 21st Annual Belle R. and Joseph H. Braun Memorial Symposium: 2014 International Elder Law & Policy Conference. The conference was held at The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, Illinois, on July 10-11, 2014, and was co-sponsored by The John Marshall Law School, Roosevelt University of Chicago, and The East China University of Political Science and Law of Shanghai, China. The conference provided a forum for international scholars, human rights advocates, and policymakers to participate in an academic setting to discuss the current law and policies that affect the rights of older persons and to explore means to advance rights of and legal protections for older persons. The theme of the conference was intended to complement and support the ongoing discussions at the United Nations Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing, through a series of presentations, panel discussions, and the drafting of the Chicago Declaration on the Rights of Older Persons. Ralph Ruebner is a Professor of Law and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at The John Marshall Law School. He served as the Conference Chair for The 21st Annual Belle R. and Joseph H. Dean Ruebner has published law journal articles and presented at numerous international conferences on human rights topics, and has testified before Congress on human rights conditions in Peru. He serves as the Reporter of the Supreme Court Committee on Illinois Evidence. He has taught Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and International Human Rights. With the number of seniors increasing at an unprecedented rate. this is a very important topic. I was surprised to learn that the number of elderly persons incarcerated has increased at astounding rates, and that the elderly are the most expensive group to incarcerate! This is an issue most people are not aware of, and presents a challenge to all who care about the elderly.
