Danko One of the best books, if not the best book ever written on chess tactics. The presentation is not just excellent, it is outstanding. Each chapter is devoted to a specific tactic, with an overview of the central idea behind the tactic and how it can be utilized. This is followed by a gamut of puzzles to help the reader find the tactic and apply it to gain the advantage in a given position. The puzzles are well thought out, well composed by the author and are fun to do. In scope, they range from simple to intermediate to quite challenging. The illustrations are superb- clear and crisp. When I opened the book. it grabbed me right away. I was pulled right into it and was hooked immediately. Mr. MacEnulty is not only an excellent player but an excellent writer and teacher as well. You simply cannot go wrong in purchasing this volume. It's worth the price of admission many times over. Anyone who wants to improve their playing ability can do no better than to purchase this wonderful work. This book and its author belong in the Chess Hall of Fame!

Well organized and the answers to the puzzles are conveniently in small print at the bottom of the page. Personally i like it that I'm able to read this book without a chess-board. Also convenient. The examples such as "removing the guard" are well explained.

Chapter sampling: en prise (unguarded), take a more valuable piece, more (or better) attackers than defenders, fork, pin, skewer, discovery or discovered check, double check, overload or overworked piece, remove the guard, deflection, decoy, trapping. Explains chess notation. Has short sample games. I wish I had had such a book when I started playing. Hundreds of beginner rating points will be owed to this book.

Pretty, but a warning about the ink By Mary Jo DiBella There are some really pretty patterns in this book, and they aren't very 'busy', which some books are and personally I do not find terribly relaxing. Depending on the mood I am in, I color with either gel pens, watercolor markers, or Copic markers. The gel pens and watercolor markers work very well here, but the Copics (and presumably any other alcohol-based markers) smudge and dissolve the ink with which the design is printed. The results are not very pretty at all. So buyers will want to be careful about the media they use for coloring.

In the poorest countries, such as Afghanistan, Haiti, and Mali, the United States has struggled to work with governments whose corruption and lack of capacity are increasingly seen to be the cause of instability and poverty. The development and security communities call for "good governance" to improve the rule of law, democratic accountability, and the delivery of public goods and services. The United States and other rich liberal democracies insist that this is the only legitimate model of governance. Yet poor governments cannot govern according to these ideals and instead are compelled to rely more heavily on older, cheaper strategies of holding power, such as patronage and repression.

The unwillingness to admit that poor governments do and must govern differently has cost the United States and others inestimable blood and coin. Informed by years of fieldwork and drawing on practitioner work and academic scholarship in politics, economics, law, and history, this book explains the origins of poor governments in the formation of the modern state system and describes the way they govern. It argues that, surprisingly, the effort to stigmatize and criminalize the governance of the poor is both fruitless and destabilizing. The United States requires a more effective foreign policy to engage poor governments and acknowledge how they govern.

About the Author

M. A. Thomas is a lawyer and political economist who has worked as a governance specialist for foreign aid donors in some of the world's poorest countries. From 2005 until 2014, she was associate professor of international development at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University. Her articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, the American Interest, Policy Review, International Affairs, the Journal of Modern African Studies, the European Journal of Development Research, Development and Change, and the Defense Acquisition Research Journal.

Realpolitik Applied to Government By Nona Thomas posits that financially poor governments govern less because they do not have the resources to govern more; necessarily must govern differently because they do not have the resources to govern in accord with our Western ideal; and then concludes that because of their lack of economic resources, poor governments have more important priorities than providing those governed with public goods like health care, infrastructure and the rule of law. I don't think anyone can reasonably disagree with Thomas' first two points, but to me her third point seems more a product of the people in government, than the nature of the government, but it may be impossible to separate the two when dealing with poor countries and governments. Thomas points out how advanced governments have failed to recognize the essential differences and flaws in poor governments and continually waste capital when making aid decisions based on misperception and hope, rather than reality. Thomas also persuasively compares the success of western governments, the product of centuries of the consolidation of power, with the failure of poor governments, set up arbitrarily and quickly through decolonization without much thought to how those poor countries could finance expected governmental activities far from the capital. Some of the Thomas' prescriptions, like the repeal of FCPA, may lead to debate, but her essential thesis, is hey guys lets get real. Poor governments don't function like rich governments, so we should deal with those poor governments with our eyes open and with realistic expectations in the hope for incremental progress. (After all is it realistic to expect the Third world to establish functional governmental machinery in two generations machinery when it took th First world centuries to accomplish that task). The book is an important addition to discussion regarding foreign policy, aid and NGOs. I highly recommend it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good Story About Her Struggles, but... By N. Thomas Normally I roll my eyes when I see books or websites that start with "My Story." Usually the stories are all the same story about how the writer was fat, hated themselves, struggled, lost weight, regained it, lost it and so on, but I did buy the book after reading the sample because the author had such a compelling story, but alas it was that story that made me a little bored with the book after a few pages. I'm an info junkie and I was looking for information about how she lost all of this weight, but it isn't revealed until little the very last few pages. This is more of an autobiography of sorts and in the end it is basically the same things that we know: stay away from processed foods, refined carbs, and so on. I am now convinced though that there is nothing new to be learned about losing weight.If you want to read a decent book about someone's struggles with weight loss, then this is it, but if you are looking for a book with "meat" and strong detail about weight loss, this is not the one.

No more Fad Diets for Me By August Carter I wanted to read this book when I saw the title, I wanted to know how in the world she lost that much weight in 3 months. With all the different diets out there, how is one to know which one will work best, well this author followed her own diet. I loved her chapter on The Non Diet Weight Loss Diet. Not only did the author share her positives but she also included her negatives. She includes lists of great foods to eat that aided her in her weight loss, plus she included her diet pros and cons. Great book and I recommend it for anyone wanting to lose weight.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is no-nonsense. It can happen for u! By Michelle THIS IS SO TRUE. You can definitely build your own plan and lose tons of weight. It does not have to be a super low calorie plan, or anything unhealthy. All you need to do is do exactly what Roberta did and plan out your meals as well as your activities entirely around YOU. I did a similar thing years back when I had tipped my personal weight scale fears and there was no way I would follow any diet or exercise program without failing at some point. People do not realize that self-sabotage is quite real, which is essentially what Roberta tries to avoid. Why then try to follow plans that have nothing to do with us, our personalities, or our budgets or lifestyles. You all can do it, like the author did. Let healthy happen for you. It is very true that it can happen. It CAN happen for you!

About the Author A prolific poet and professor of English at Drake University, Lewis Worthington Smith published numerous poems and plays in his tenure. He was a versatile master of technique, while at the same time vivid and vital. He was described as being able to not sacrifice thought to form or rhythm and rhyme to the follies of free verse. In History of Drake University, Smith is classified as, “One of the writers of verse in the past third of a century who has dared to ignore the fatuous of the modern faddists. His verse has a lyrical quality superior to Sidney Lanier and is far richer in thought and perfection of form. He is as musical as Poe, with far more substance and spiritual vision.” Smith had his works published in such esteemed publications as the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times. Of the many plays that Smith authored, his most acclaimed is “The Art of Life.” and was the leading comedy in Donald Robertson’s repertoire of plays. In Smith’s 38 years at Drake University he was a member of the Poetry Society of America, he founded the English Club at Drake, and bolstered and improved the English department by adding classes and expertise. He also established the Drake chapter of the national writing fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta. Smith became the Dean of the Graduate Division in 1938.

Old Book, But Insightful By MomAndADad I have taken two fiction writing classes now that I'm in college, but I love the way that Lewis Worthington Smith has given us information on the basics of what goes into a short story. If you need to write short stories and you feel like you don't know the framework of what goes into doing so, read this book, or just skim the parts that you find necessary.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Source Book for Writers By Amazon Customer As an ex-english teacher I found the "teaching" part of this book confusing. There were definitions for words that didn't need to be defined like incidents or events to help expain what a plot is. This is meant to be a college writing book and these words would have been defined in grade school. The writer suggests looking at pieces of writing and analyzing for mood, setting and descriptions of characters. Although this is not a bad practice that you might employ once or twice a year, it tends to make a person very negative as they read. I do highly suggest the list of writing exercises in the back for a springboard of daily writing practice to hone your skills.

That's fine, however, it's a little more technical than I think it should be. Maybe instead of being technical and reading more like a textbook, it could be a little more plain. Maybe then it might be a little more interesting.

From the Author Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and later studied under the auspices of the founder of the Buteyko Method,; the late Dr. Konstantin Buteyko. From a very young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at age twenty-sixthe age of 26. By applying the principleals from Dr. Buteyko, Patrick experienced immediate relief from his asthmatic symptoms - a feat that over 20more than twenty years of medication had failed to accomplish. Learning to breathe through his nose and reducing his breathing volume positively changed his life in so many ways. For the first time ever, Patrick's asthma was under control. This life-changing discovery motivated him Patrick to change his career in order to help children and adults who suffered from similar breathing problems. Following his time in Russia in 2002, Patrick has been teaching the Oxygen Advantage program in Australia, USA the United States, and throughout Europe. Counterintuitive Simple Inexpensive Way to Radically Improve Your Health By Bud Taylor I had an opportunity to review the galley copy of this book and enjoyed it so much I read it three times as there is so much useful information in it that is not taught in conventional medical approaches. I read about three nonfiction books a week and this was one of the top ten I have read in the last year. This book is HIGHLY recommended and uses a highly counter intuitive approach with profound health benefits. Hardly any health practitioners are aware of this important inexpensive tool to improve your health because this information has not been taught in Western medical schools. Dr. Mercola actually interviewed the author two years ago http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/11/24/buteyko-breathing-method.aspx and also wrote the forward to the book.Proper breathing is every bit as important to your health as is eating the right foods or drinking fresh, pure water. Yet, if you're like most people, you take your breathing for granted! What’s more, there is a good chance that the way you are breathing may be hurting you without you even realizing it. While breathing is a fundamentally natural function, it can be negatively influenced by many factors of modern living, such as stress, sitting at a desk all day and even excessive talking. In fact, about 80 percent of the Western population breathes incorrectly—typically by overbreathing.Most of us are taught if we want to relax or prepare for an important event to take deep breaths. Paradoxically this can actually be one of your worst actions. Why? When you overbreathe, you deplete the carbon dioxide levels in your blood. That may seem desirable, since carbon dioxide is often considered a waste product, but your body actually needs healthy levels of carbon dioxide to release oxygen from the hemoglobin in your blood cells to your tissues. If the CO2 level is too low the oxygen will bind too strongly to hemoglobin and will not be released.If you have low CO2 levels due to breathing too rapidly or heavily, the smooth muscles around your airways also constrict. This constriction creates a negative feedback loop that can lead to chronic hyperventilating and serious health challenges. It also impairs the production of nitric oxide which causes your blood vessels to tighten, reduces blood flow to your heart and could lead to a heart attack.The most common form of overbreathing is breathing through your mouth. Remember your mouth was designed for eating, not breathing. When you breathe through your mouth, the air bypasses your nose, sinuses and nasal passages and enters your lungs directly without the benefit of filtration and temperature and moisture regulation that these tissues provide.While it seems that taking deeper breaths through your mouth allows you to bring more oxygen into your body, , the opposite actually happens. This is because your blood is nearly already saturated with oxygen, typically around 97-99% and breathing more simply won’t add more oxygen to your tissues. The key is releasing the oxygen bound to your red blood cells to release the oxygen. This only occurs when your CO2 levels are high enough. So excessive breathing drives your CO2 levels lower making it harder to deliver oxygen to your tissues. To test this theory out, rapidly take five or six deep breaths in and out of your mouth and see how you feel. Most people will begin to experience some light-headedness or dizziness, which is related to low CO2 levels.Sadly new research shows that mouth breathing is associated with many health problems, including common ones like asthma, anxiety and sleep apnea and most also likely plays a role in many chronic degenerative diseases like heart disease, cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer’s. The first step to improving your breathing is simply to breathe through your nose, not through your mouth. Nasal breathing has a number of advantages for your health AND your fitness, because your nose and sinuses “pre-treat" air as it enters your body.There are a number of ways to improve your breathing and re-train yourself to breathe through your nose. My clear favorite though is the Buteyko Method, named for the Russian physician who developed it in the 1950s. Dr. Buteyko discovered that the level of carbon dioxide in your lungs correlates to your ability to hold your breath after normal exhalation, and he developed a simple self-test to determine your CO2 levels that is taught in the book.The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick Mckeown is currently the best reference work to teach Buteyko breathing exercises that are taught and demonstrated in this book are one of the best strategies to permanently resolve asthma without dangerous drugs and relieve anxiety and sleep apnea. Part of the Buteyko Method involves breath-hold exercises designed to simulate the effects of high-altitude training. This is another major benefit for those who compete in athletics. When your body is exposed reduced oxygen levels—such as the experience of high altitude, or by holding the breath—many metabolic adaptations take place. These adjustments improve the oxygen-carrying capacity of your blood and widens your blood vessels.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I really like the title By james alex Patrick McKeown has put together an educational book on breathing which got me thinking. The book is titled, "The Oxygen Advantage". I really like the title. I also liked that I learned something.There is a chapter in the book titled: "The Oxygen Paradox". It sounds like something out of science fiction (which I love); but make no mistake, it read like pure science. Mr. McKeown's writing style is easy to understand and digestible. He knows his subject. It's a good read. He writes about the Bohr Effect, which was (re)discovered in 1904 by the Danish physiologist Christian Bohr.Christian Bohr wrote, “The carbon dioxide pressure of the blood is to be regarded as an important factor in the inner respiratory metabolism. If one uses carbon dioxide in appropriate amounts, the oxygen that was taken up can be used more effectively throughout the body.”Maybe I missed that lesson in school; but as I read it made sense. The body works a certain way and we set up conditions that are sometimes contrary to optimal health. And the body tells us that what we are doing is wrong; but we don't seem to understand or don't have the knowledge to correct it. I think this book helps fill that gap.Patrick McKeown's book: "The Oxygen Advantage". has something for everyone. I mean, if you are alive, you probably know something about breathing, right? Many people probably feel this way. Breathing, particularly low CO2 tolerance, is taken so over granted that it is constantly overlooked as an indicator or barometer of health. What do we really know about breathing? What do I really know about breathing? I do know if I am cut from air for a length of time things can get really scary, really fast. I mean, "P- A - N - I - C". That's, panic. It's easy to say with breath, not so easy say - or spell - without the breath. And as Mr. McKeown explains in his book, depending how quickly you reach that need for air could be an indication a person who over breathes.In another chapter of the book, Mr. McKeown explained the B.O.L.T. (Body Oxygen Level Test) an individual can use to test his or herself as to their CO2 tolerance. It is a demonstrate the Bohr Model in action. I can go on and on about the book. The ideas presented in this book are applicable to the athlete, the person who talks for living, the person who just wants to get a better handle on his or her health, and health professionals. Many people can benefit from this.

The possibility that we can increase CO2 tolerance and fitness by breathing less is a very interesting prospect. As someone who suffered allergies as a child and was a chronic nose breather, I am encouraged by the promise of the exercises. I also enjoyed the well described exercises and progressions. I recommend this book to all athletes, health care professionals and anyone who wants to breathe better.

As this book explains, marijuana can definitely be a hopeful additive to what’s happening in the world, because it helps us ease up, get a fresh view of our lives, relax and de-stress. I was worried the struggles would be too depressing, but really the book just turned them into opportunities for the reader to find strength as a result of all the challenges life gives us. I especially enjoyed the chapters on "Embracing Rock Bottom" and "The Power of Letting Go" because it is so hard not to dwell on the difficulties. The author shares her experiences and mistakes and what she had to overcome to be the person she is today. A must read if you are feeling down or just can't fathom why you are struggling!

The lessons shared in this book are integral to a successful career for both males and females. The great courage it took Cindy to share such a personal testimony is truly inspiring. What I enjoyed about the book most was the transparency. There was no sugar coating or seemingly perfect progression in her book. It is a real life journey of ups and downs along with lessons learned of how to triumph over any obstacle you may be faced with through strong faith!

About the Author Tim has worked in the health and fitness industry for almost 20 years. In that time, Tim has had the privilege of learning from some of the most gifted leaders in the fitness industry. Moran This is a revision of the first book (Original Strength) and in many ways refines and clears up the main part of the OS system. Better Pictures,clearer explanations and it is trickled with great stories of how OS has improved peoples lives!I first found OS through co-founder Geoff Neupert since I followed his Kettlebell books. I was skeptical at first. Much as Geoff points out in his own story with it. I would "fiddle" with the resets but never really consistently. About a year ago I decided with all the success everyone seems to have I would experiment. I went ALL IN. I use the resets daily now and usually more than once a day. The Results? STRONGER EVERYWHERE!! I can do L-Sit pull ups now. I can almost do a full One Arm Push Up without working on them. My Kettlebell work has vastly improved. My Karate technique is even faster,more fluid and powerful! Overall my entire body feels better,stronger and more resilient. I recently went to the Original Strength Institute to do the Pressing Reset workshop and the Pro Reset workshop to get certified to be an OS Coach. It is simply the easiest way to move and feel better!

Too good to pass up By Tim Gratsinger BOOK REVIEW: "Pressing Reset: Original Strength Reloaded" by Tim Anderson & Geoff Neupert.My job involves moving heavy people and things, interspersed with long periods of sitting in the cab of a van chassis. About 7 years ago it really started to catch up with me. I tried various systems of exercise, stretching, yoga, somatics, etcera. I found a good chiro, but I can't carry him around with me. Some isolated progress was made here and there, but I never seemed to be able to get back to feeling completely well and whole. My right shoulder developed a persistent ache that made sleeping difficult (I used to live on ibuprofen and Tylenol, but I rarely take them anymore because I don't like the long term effects).Then in Dan John's newsletter "Wandering Weights" he mentioned a book called Becoming Bulletproof. I looked it up and discovered that the concept had been re-branded as Original Strength. I bought the electronic version of the first Original Strength book so I could read it immediately on my phone. Within the first day I felt a difference in my shoulder (and it was easier to understand the tightness in the side of my neck that was the main cause of the shoulder ache). My morning "limbering up" time got shorter and more productive. I hardly ever need a foam roller anymore. Some of the resets can be done standing or even sitting, which comes in handy with system status ambulance deployment. I pre-ordered the next edition of the book, "Pressing Reset: Original Strength Reloaded". After much anticipation I finally received it. There has been a slight expansion and some tweaks, but the core concepts remain the same:1) You were wonderfully made2) Humans are wired with movement patterns that establish their original strength, and using these movement patterns can heal pain, weakness, and stiffness.3) It's important for people of all ages to play and have fun.Thank you to all of the Original Strength team for putting in the effort to spread the word. I hope that millions more people will benefit from your work, as I have.Tim Gratsinger

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I was disappointed in this book By Chad I was disappointed in this book. Knowing it was a second edition i was expecting some new information. If you have the other books in the series save your money. If you are new to Original strength buy it.
