CONSIDERING THE CASE FOR A WRITTEN UK CONSTITUTION.An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersIn this 800th anniversary year of 2015, there have been almost countless books written about Magna Carta and numerous celebrations to commemorate it on both sides of the Atlantic. With its fierce defiance of tyrannical and repressive rule, this now ancient document continues to inspire controversy and veneration almost in equal measure.It is fortunate, 800 years later, that the influence of Magna Carta continues to prevail, while still generating further controversy and discussion --hence the recent publication of this erudite and fascinating book from the Hart Publishing imprint of Bloomsbury.Unlike most current publications on the subject of Magna Carta, this book places it in its historical context. Taking an almost panoramic view of the past eight centuries, the author Andrew Blick of King’s College, London, considers Magna Carta in the light of the social, political and constitutional developments which have followed it. In so doing, he constructs a detailed and carefully argued case – as the subtitle indicates – for ‘a constitution for the United Kingdom.’In case anyone needs reminding, the UK does have a constitution -- which is good. But in the view of many, its major flaw (or perpetually annoying disappointment) is that it is not written down, which is -- um-- not so good. The Americans have a written constitution, complete with amendments implemented from time to time, but in fact difficult to amend. The old Soviet Union certainly had a written constitution which successive dictators cynically ignored. The current Russian constitution, also written down, appears to be alarmingly vulnerable to the whims of whoever holds onto power.In the United Kingdom, an unwritten constitution has been traditionally regarded as more flexible, pragmatic and ultimately fairer for the very reason that it isn’t written down. Instruments known as ‘conventions’ do exist, however which function as mechanisms for change as social mores change. Conventions of the Constitution (which are not effectively binding in perpetuity) offer a level of flexibility which the US constitution does not apparently have.Nonetheless, Blick’s arguments in favour of a written constitution are persuasive. In Parts I and II of the book, the reader is taken on a fascinating journey through English -- and subsequently UK history, focusing on those documents, (yes many of which were written) which have shaped or influenced UK constitutional development.In Part III Blick puts forward both the positive and negative case for creating a written constitution and furthermore tackles the practicalities of its actual presentation, including writing style and preamble.The book cannot fail to reveal, however, that there has been little political will to change the status quo and develop a written constitution; otherwise somewhere, sometime in the last 800 years, or notably recently – particularly and possibly under Gordon Brown -- we would somehow have acquired one.Complex and convoluted arguments aside, the fundamental question regarding a written constitution for the UK pivots on whether it would be a step forward, or a step backward for this nation. This is a lot like a Carl Hiassen book By Ramona Darling This is a lot like a Carl Hiassen book, only with Texans and Okies instead of Florida wildlife. The first laughs are on the first page, and Bingham mixes social commentary (like, the CIA has limited the Mob's contribution to foreign policy to money laundering, providing prostitutes for visiting diplomats, and importing drugs from anti-communist dictators) with very visual and funny slapstick humor. Really worth reading.

It is a great love story for modern times. Also felt it was a wake up call for those who are quick to judge. Further evidence that what happens in our youth can have a lasting affect. Rather than brush this aside, or try to move past it, it would be great as a society and allow people do what Charlotte does and seek out and get healing. Charlotte lives alot in her own headspace, that at times made me cringe at why she acts as she does, it's like I know someone and have loved and love someone with many similarities to Charlotte and this is what is intriguing about Behind red lips, it's like stepping directly into her shoes the reader becomes a voyeur of her conquests, watching her fumble, sometime comically through life. She lives for love. Yet grasping it seems to be a bit of an ordeal. Nearly every man who comes within her range is a target for her infatuation as she learns to cope with the loss of an old flame who she envisages around every corner. This is a good read for those who have loved,lived and continue to look on the bright side of life with all it's quirky moments.

Dan Swainbank does an excellent job of describing a complex, debilitating disease - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - further complicated by a genetic predisposition. The Farr family of Vermont is a subject of medical and scientific interest but told with the warm and rich stories of the family and its community. Well researched and clearly written for the layman. A must for consumer health collections in medical, hospital and larger public libraries.

It is a complex family history compounded with a supremely challenging hereditary disease. I didn't think it was possible to convey in writing the full complexity of their story. Dan Swainbank elegantly and swiftly carries the reader through the story. He masterfully weaves in the current state of neurodegenerative research with the emotional and significant family burden. Anyone wanting to understand ALS, hereditary disease, or interested in the powerful role of genealogy in understanding family affairs, will thoroughly enjoy this book. A powerful story well told.

Complete Tenor Banjo Method, by Mel Bay

About the Author Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the little Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears Roebuck guitar at the age of 13 and several months later played his first "gig." (He recalled playing until his fingers were raw!) Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to play both instruments. During his teenage years Mel played with a wild assortement of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as strange as the job he landed with, in Mel's words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns mounted on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. After a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and began extolling the merits of his "wonder elixer." In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and began his professional career. He played with numerous local and traveling bands. In addition, he landed staff guitar jobs on several radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally. While Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to teach as many as 100 students a week. He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists. After the war Mel was asked to write instructional materials on guitar for GI's wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and wrote his landmark initial book titled The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. (This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System and continues to be one the finest rhythm guitar chord texts available!) His Modern Guitar Method was penned shortly thereafter. For years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay books caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since. Mel used to sell D'Angelico guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his New Yorker model but his favorite was the initial Mel Bay Model crafted as a gift for him by John D'Angelico. This famous guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cut away" model and had a slightly thinner neck. This instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method for decades. Someone once calculated that sales of guitar books written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel frequently said that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his Modern Guitar Method have alone surpassed the 7 million mark. It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instruction in this century.

Very Complete Tenor Banjo Method By trucktricks Tenor banjo methods are not easy to find, because the tenor banjo does not seem to have the popularity it did in, say, the 1920's. (Not to be confused with Irish Tenor Banjo, which is tuned differently). I inherited a 1928 tenor banjo in cherry condition when my father passed away. It seemed such a shame to have such a beautiful instrument, and not be doing anything with it. This Mel Bay method is perfect particularly for anyone who has some musical experience on another instrument. Published in 1968... so, no CD included, but this method takes you through basic chords as well as scales, both major and minor, in every key. It covers both tablature and chord shapes, as well as some nomenclature that is specific to banjo playing. I would highly recommend this method for anyone who has a tenor banjo.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Used for Self-Instruction for Tenor Guitar By Tinfoot I ended up buying an 1987 edition although this had sat in my Amazon wish list for awhile. Aside from the banjo specific photos, the written material naturally works equally well for tenor guitar. In my edition at least, there is NO "standard" banjo tablature (the Look Inside preview wouldn't give me any "inner page" samples for the current edition); it is presented in entirely as music staff notation. Nevertheless, this should not hinder you in any way from using this book!It WILL teach you how to read music notation in effortless manner as it pertains to the fretboard. By the time you reach page 15, you will be wondering what the big deal is about reading music. ;)This book along with Buddy Watcher's Learning Tenor Banjo DVD makes a very comprehensive self-study course.

Good book to learn about essential oils By Nancy Jones I used to use pills or medications when I felt anxious or stressed but after reading this book I discovered the power of the essential oils. I tried the “Soothing Bend for Anxiety and Depression” essential oil recipe and it worked really well, I tried it after a long day job and I felt very relaxed. This book contains many recipes not only for stress relief but also for skin care, acne, weight loss and even for baby care. I really liked this book and I think if someone wants to try something different from the traditional products and medications, essential oils are a very good alternative.

This is the key question posed by Graeme Dinwoodie, who, as editor of this thought-provoking book, heads what you might call a stellar cast of academic contributors, all from top universities worldwide, from Aberdeen and Exeter to Rome, Munich, Copenhagen and Tokyo, to Osgoode Hall in Canada and Washington University, St. Louis School of Law in the United States.Professor Dinwoodie himself is Professor of Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law at Oxford and also Director of the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre.So laid out here for the further enlightenment of IP lawyers and specialist academics everywhere, is a choice selection of insight and scholarship on intellectual property, which takes, generally, a deeper and more analytical look at the subject than one might expect to find in any number of other legal texts. To this end, the various contributors, in various ways, examine a range of other questions.‘What’ for example ‘is the relationship between intellectual property and general legal principles?’ And there’s a related question: what is the scope of intellectual property law and does intellectual property law defy definition? Dinwoodie points out that even though the term ‘intellectual property is defined in the TRIPS Agreement, ‘there remains debate about the borders of the concept, let alone its essence.’The general aim of these arguments apparently is to rescue IP from being thought of as a narrow field, requiring specialist advice only. Exploring, for example, the overlaps between IP law and , say, contract law and other areas of law, the majority of the contributors to this book have sought to analyse the role of IP within broader legal institutions, concluding that, in the editor’s words, intellectual property ‘is too significant socially and commercially to be considered only by specialists.’As for the obvious relationship between IP and contract law, contributor Giuseppina D’Agostino of Osgoode Hall Law School, insists that copyright law is ‘inextricably bound to contract law and that ‘contract law traps the various entitlements that copyright law creates.’ Referring to this tension between the two, she asserts that identifying copyright’s status as ‘specialis’ vis-a-vis contract law’s possible designation as, ‘generalis’, is a lot less important than determining and explaining the relationship of copyright to contract law.It is this ‘hierarchical’ relationship which most affects creative output in the cultural industries, she says, ‘especially freelance authors.’ A more integrative approach is therefore preferable, as ‘without contract law, copyright law has little meaning.’Such lucid and concise commentary is typical of the insightful discussions on IP to be found in this book. Published by Edward Elgar, it is an important contribution to the body of scholarly literature on intellectual property and a valuable addition to the IP practitioner’s professional library. By sailorrun Riding the Rainbow is a heart-warming read, filled with all the trials and tribulations of pre-adolescence. It is equal parts social commentary and equal parts the story of a little (well-loved) girl’s courage. Lily tries to understand the prejudices of adults around her, faces school bullies, grapples with her poor eyesight, and struggles to accept how her family is different, all the while stumbling her way towards the secrets of real happiness: being true to yourself. Happy and sad surprises hide behind every page. Throughout the story I felt like Lily’s third mom, rooting for this strong little girl to claim her place in the imperfect world.Genta doesn’t shy away from showing the brutal reality of prejudice, but she also doesn’t shy away from highlighting the goodness in people’s hearts. She has a way of writing that adds depth to every character that enters the story, no matter how brief a time they are present. I can picture vividly the earnest, yet sad, Charlie, whom Lily meets briefly at the pancake breakfast. I wish I could have a conversation with Mrs. Bluestone over a bowl of ice cream at Bluestone’s Confectionary, because she seems like just the sort of kind, worldly woman who would have an answer, and ice cream flavor, for every heartache. I grimaced at every encounter Lily had with the “preps” of her 5th grade class, and with no effort could imagine the superficial and mean-spirited Jenna, surrounded by her entourage.A great book, and I highly recommend it!

Being a young girl in a rainbow family is not easy By Mary Wright Riding The Rainbow by Genta Sebastian is an inspiring, lovely read: it celebrates the innocence and pain of a fifth grade girl who is bullied and friendless in a small town because she has two mothers. Having been bullied as a grade schooler myself, I could really relate to the anxiety and lack of self-esteem Lilly feels in the beginning. At a birthday sleepover her classmates torment her past her endurance and she runs away. Just at this point when she hits bottom, Lily begins to have hope because of a kind adult who befriends her and because of the loving support of her family when they realize what is happening. Then she makes a friend her age who is in the same kind of family. I liked the way the author contrasts her new friend’s family, who is not out, with Lily’s mothers and her, who are. Lily learns how hard it is to lie to everyone and eventually her friend’s family develops a new awareness too. A very sweet and true to life story. It provides good role models and does not sugar-coat the difficulties of being part of a rainbow family, but also celebrates how rich that experience can be.

By Judy Comella If you are looking for a book that explains the trials and tribulations a young adult faces when having 2 Mother's this is the book! This book is so well written with explanations of not just the youth side of things but also those of the 2 Mothers. The child in this book faces bullying from school mates as well as some in the community and then one day finds someone who is almost exactly like her except the "new friend" has 2 Fathers.This book covers both the story regarding the bullying that goes on but also delivers the feelings of both sets of parents as they see the torment and cruelty deliver by school mates who pretend to be friends with both girls. The book also deals with the girls "new" found friendship and with the school administrators who refuse to see what is happening and take the proper action.I recommend this book to anyone who is studying child development, perhaps a social worked or school guidance consular. It's a great read for everyone and deserved to win a Golden Crown Literary Society Award this year at the conference.

As an actor, Connery won an Academy Award for his performance in The Untouchables (1989), and he has been awarded Golden Globe and BAFTA awards as well. Based on these designations, one can reasonably place Connery among the ranks of the most acclaimed Hollywood actors of all time, a figure whose critical reputation only grew as he matured.

Considering his personal acclaim as an actor, it is perhaps surprising that despite his status, most of the films in which Connery has appeared are not particularly acclaimed. Indeed, scanning his filmography, viewers finds very few films that have been showered with any significant awards, and even the role that brought Connery to fame, the James Bond franchise, initially received a largely lukewarm critical reception.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your time By Kathleen Ladwig This was a horrible book. I can handle poor writing or poor editing, but not both at the same time. This is an abbreviated version, it constantly repeats itself and is just so badly written that you cannot get through it. Even huge fans will be disappointed. You can get the same info on a one-page Website. This company should not be allowed to touch a book - ever! What a waste of my time.

Because I have three children who were once addicted to the Disney Channel I've heard him sing on "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", though both my husband and I wondered if it was really him singing.And because I love science fiction I know the folks at Paramount tried to entice the man to appear as the villain in Star Trek 5 by naming his domain Sha-ka-ri.But I knew nothing of his early home life. Possibly the info was available on the internet, but it was so nice to have it bundled up in one place for me.And I didnt know he was in the military, or that he got his first role because he'd been lifting weights and had a body.I didn't know a certain Mr. Caine was his friend, though it's always good to have friends who can help you.The books available from Charles River Editors always surprise me. They run the gamut from Presidents to ancient history to even this movie star, who is labeled to be a miser by some, but merely cautious by others.I wonder why the book didn't say the one thing for which Sean Connery is most famous. Any time a survey is taken this man is recognized as the best Bond. Even people fifty years younger than Connery, who have only seen his movies on their TV screen, have recognized his physical strength and his prowess with the ladtes.Aren't those those the only two qualities a spy needs?

This Charles River Editors summary does a great job of summarizing. My favorite biography/ autobiography is Sean Connery's own book, Being A Scot, his autobiography which gives the story of his Edinburgh and Scotland politics. You' ll read there so much not in these other books and get a great glimpse inside Sean Connery's beliefs a true passions in life. This book British Legends is a great quick read and appears accurate based on the other books I've read. Good read.
