About the Author Amy Poehler is an actress, producer, director, and author. She currently stars on the Emmy-nominated Parks and Recreation, and appeared for seven seasons on Saturday Night Live.Pete Docter is vice president of creative at Pixar Animation Studios and the writer and director of Disney•Pixar's Inside Out. He directed the Academy Award®–winning feature films Monsters, Inc. and Up, and also worked as an animator, screenwriter, and voice actor. He lives in Piedmont, California.

Mixed bag of emotions By Parka [[VIDEOID:b84a21e4d810a8af4262c691727d6be3]]Unlike other Pixar films, Inside Out deals with something rather abstract like emotions. So how do you use art to represent that. Well, you get to see just that in this artbook.The book collects the concept art for the film. There are sketches and coloured illustrations of the characters, places and fantasy landscapes. The artworks are beautiful and nice, but can also be abstract at times, such as for the imaginary landscapes, so I really prefer those with more details fleshed out. The main artists whose work you'll see a lot are from Ronnie Del Carmen, Ralph Eggleston and Don Shank.The downside of the book is the presentation style. I feel that it's unnecessary to blow up simple sketches to full page sizes. Sometimes it works, sometimes, it doesn't. And when it doesn't, it feels like it's trying to fill space. I found myself flipping through several pages with just a single sketch on it rather quickly because they just don't have enough details to hold attention. Whereas I would pause and admire the more detailed pieces.There's quite a lot of white space in the book that could have been filled by commentary. Or the simple sketches could have been scaled down to allow more artworks to be included. There's no commentary other than the foreword by Amy Poehler and introduction by Pete Docter. Some text talking about the design would have added so much more depth to the book. There are some captions that describe the art, but more often than not there are none. I find it very confusing that they don't label who some of the characters are.The Art of Inside Out feels lacking. I was looking back at the last four Pixar artbooks for Monsters University, Brave, Cars 2 and Toy Story 3 and they were all more substantial, with much more artworks and interesting commentary from the artists and staff.Another downside is the lack of order. I wasn't able to perceive any type of categorisation. Usually, artbooks would group designs for characters, environments, props, effects separately. Some books would choose to present the art chronologically as they appear in the film. The artworks in this book feels jumbled up in no particular order. And it doesn't help that the captions are sometimes missing. All the artworks are credited to specific artists though.It's probably not surprising that there's not even an author listed. I guess nobody wants to take credit for this book.So overall, this book is a mixed bag to me. I would have expected something better coming from Pixar. If you have owned other Pixar artbooks, you'll be able to see clearly that the other books are better.3 out of 5 stars.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. The Art of Inside Out By JMM [[VIDEOID:4c37a90291338540d7d05fb7d48af8f]]"The Art of Inside Out" is a fascinating look inside what should be another modern classic from Pixar. As a fan of the animation company, this book was a must-own - and it's instantly one of my favorite art books from their films. Pixar has been doing a lot of sequels lately (and they have more scheduled), so it's nice to see an original concept like "Inside Out" where the team has to start from scratch and build a world.This book compiles just about every conceivable type of artwork from the film: pencil drawings, ink, marker, digital paintings, and even clay sculpts. You also get a few pages of storyboards and the color script.Much of the imagery in the book is dedicated to the main characters - Riley (an 11-year old girl), her parents, and most importantly the emotions: Joy, Disgust, Fear, Anger, and Sadness. There are also many pages dedicated to the worlds that these characters inhabit - specifically the world inside Riley's head in which the emotions live.One of the things that is very cool to see is how the five emotions essentially began as simple shapes and colors. Of course, the final characters are very layered and have a lot of detail - but the fundamental differences in shape and color allow the audience to easily distinguish one emotion from another and gives each character their own unique look to match their personality.There is almost no text here, other than a foreword by Amy Poehler (who voices Joy) and an introduction by director Pete Docter. Some images do get captions, but they are short. So those looking for insight into the production process may be disappointed; although the artwork itself kind of demonstrates how the film's characters and design evolved over time.I enjoy all the Pixar films; one of things I like is the way the filmmakers collaborate. The directors are very involved in the art and design process, taking a hands-on approach in a way that many live-action directors don't. Pete Docter is a great director (Up, Monsters Inc.) but he is also a great visual artist - the book shows some of his own sketches.Anyone interested in animation or design in film should consider a purchase. Kids should really enjoy flipping through this one because there is a lot of great character art and colorful imagery. This is one of the nicest art books I've come across in a long time.The book is available in hardcover or as a Kindle version; I highly recommend you purchase the hard copy, in this case the art deserves to be seen on the printed page rather than on a computer screen.[NOTE: See comments section for link to photo gallery and high-quality HD unboxing video].

Don't be fooled by its simplicity By Luke R The team behind 'The Art of Inside Out' has chosen to take a radical, groundbreaking approach in composing this art book; they let the art speak for itself. Many of the art books for animated features released in lockstep with their theatrical debuts, Pixar/Chronicle's past efforts included, offer poorly laid out images in awful photoshop collages with text that often tries to present the film's production as wart less as they can with little insight into the filmmaking process. One day, there will be a book that, with the benefit of perspective which only time can provide, will give readers the full history of the making of 'Inside Out'. I'm not sure how long it will be till then, but let's focus on the book itself.The focus of this title is on the art. Pixar and Chronicle made the conscious decision to create a book which focuses on how to best present this superlative art by showing the film's progression through its visual development. The book is broken into three nondescript sections; the initial broad strokes to understand how to represent the mind and what the film's story should be, locking down and deepening those elements, and the refinement which occurs during active production. For a film about understanding there are limits to your perspective, this book works within these limits to the fullest.I could not finish this review without gushing about the wonderful art in this book. Some of Pixar's finest artists worked on this film including Ronnie Del Carmen, Ralph Eggleston, Tony Fucile, Don Shank, and Jerome Ranft. The skill and dedication with which these and many other artists threw themselves at this complicated task is truly inspiring.'The Art of Inside Out' might just be that, a collection of art from the Disney-Pixar film 'Inside Out', but the presentation and the art itself more than warrant a purchase.
