One of the most popular and controversial novels of the Twentieth Century was Forever Amber. Kathleen Winsor's story of Restoration England follows the exploits of a beautiful girl named Amber St. Clare who bed-hops her way from country wench to mistress of the King of England. Forever Amber became a cause celebre for the "watchdogs of morality" who attempted to ban the book, which went on to sell millions of copies despite their efforts. When a film version of the novel was announced these same "watchdogs" turned their attention toward Hollywood. Although controversy might sell books and cinema tickets it can also damage reputations and prevent serious works of art from ever being taken seriously. Forever Amber: From Novel to Film hopes to shed a new light on the much maligned movie version of the best selling novel of the Forties and show how misguided censorship can ultimately damage artistic expression.

Gary Smith's book is a must for those who cherish the once-notorious novel (by Katherine Winsor) and the Otto Preminger film adapted from it. The movie's history is a sad and dramatic one, and Smith has done a creditable job of documenting it. There are several previously-unpublished pictures as well--many of them from the aborted Peggy Cummins/John Stahl version. Smith's account of the making of the movie draws on many sources, some firsthand, which give this book a lift, and it's interesting to see the contemporary reviews in a chapter toward the end: many critics found they were pleasantly surprised by the movie, after having been primed for something trashy and vulgar. Bear Manor Media's release is neat and clean, but might have benefited from being larger: the pictures are perhaps not reproduced with the gloss they might have in a deluxe coffee table volume. Wouldn't it be nice if Smith's work encourages someone to get behind the restoration of this elegant, beautifully photographed Technicolor film? It certainly deserves to be seen by a larger audience. Smith's restoration (through photos) of the Cummins version is a great reason for fans to buy this, though there are several other thorough chapters on the movie's journey "from book to film". A fine job, and for those of you who worship this film (and you know who you are) it's a nice addition to your film library. Recommended.
