OinK! Only in Korea! In 1980, years after Vietnam and even more years before Desert Storm, America was experiencing a seventeen-year period of peace. One of the few places a young army officer could find adventure was on the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea, Freedom's Frontier. The second day in-country, the lieutenant was no longer a Korean cherry boy. Hours later he found himself inside the DMZ. By the end of the week, he was wounded. As the intelligence officer for the battalion, he knew the area around the DMZ was a dangerous place. The minefields took many casualties, small arms fire got others, and artillery short rounds claimed even more, leading up to the bizarre episode of a missing severed hand and the search for the diamond ring that was no longer on it. Even something as simple as crossing the Imjin River after the monsoons turned deadly. And then there was the most feared affliction of all, catching river blindness. It's not a disease – it's going down to the river and getting your eyes shot out. The lieutenant's daily routine was anything but routine. The averages told the story: a shooting incident every ten days with thirty-three combat related deaths during the year. The patrols were long and cold, the guard posts were desolate, and Freedom Bridge operations droned on until enemy frogmen shattered the monotony. Peace, in that part of the world, had a unique definition. As they say, the DMZ isn't hell but you can see it from there. Those who worked hard also played hard. The parties were so wild that they fell into the category of “that which didn't kill you made you stronger”. The eleven and a half months in Korea provided more experiences than ever expected, especially the ending, when the lieutenant's twelve-month tour was cut short in a most unusual way by a booby trap. This 'slice of life' novel is obviously military genre and is definitely memoir-ish. The story is steeped in facts because the author is the lieutenant intelligence officer who journeyed to the Korean DMZ – and paid the price with a severe and lasting physical wound and a psychological scar that, to this day, haunts him from time to time. This is not going to be the next great American novel and it won't win any awards. However, it is an interesting story, like the ones told around the kitchen table or over drinks. When told, people become quiet, and listen. The reader will be completely entertained and amazed at what happened to one man in the Land of the Not Quite Right. Go to any bookstore and you will see racks of books about Vietnam, World War II and Iraq/Afghanistan. Noticeably missing are books about Korea. This is an exceptional military tale not only because it takes place in Korea, but it is also about a peacetime military and the sacrifices soldiers make even when they are not at war. OinK! Only in Korea! is a must read for a veteran and there are millions of them who have served in Korea during the time of the truce. This book brings to people a story that should be told and will allow “the lieutenant” to finally lay his peacetime “war” to rest.

Hoffman (Review by Jeannie Hoffman) After being an officer in the Army for 23+ years, I found this book to be funny and heartbreaking; realistic and tough, with no holding back. I could feel myself shivering through the cold and feeling hungry, tired, and irritated at the sometime incompetence or lack ofcommon sense of some in leadership positions. I felt the short-lived relief of a hot steam bath, and sadness for the way of life of many women near the DMZ in Korea (and elsewhere). Soldiers will identify with the events that occurred in this book and find the humor as the usual medicine military folks rely on to carry on in rough times. They will also see how one presses on through pain to take care of his comrades and complete his tasks first. Although this is a novel based on events that happened while the author was in Korea, it pulls you into each fast moving minute as extremely real, humble, and without heroics - what a movie this would make! I'd like to add that this is a good read for anyone who might like a taste of what military life is like in a danger zone, like the DMZ in Korea then, and is still to this day. Five stars - hard to put down!

Learning the truth about the DMZ and the chaos that happens was very interesting. I would HIGHLY recommend this book as part of your military library.I do not think you will be disappointed.Again, outstanding read.

The real deal and funny as hell By chris I spent a couple of short TDYs on the DMZ in the mid-90s, and this book brought a flood of memories back to me. While my time in Korea wasn't nearly as eventful (as in 1%) as the author's, Osterhout's vivid descriptions of the approach to the dreaded DMZ and the crazy nightlife in the dark alleys of Korea are dead-on, and I was completely drawn into his memoir. I laughed out loud a couple of times at some (many) of the great anecdotes that fill this book. I felt like he and I were long-lost Army buddies sitting around trading war stories. You don't have to have a military background to enjoy this great book; in fact, I think it would be a great primer for a non-serviceman to read if he was interested in seeing how day-to-day life in the machine can take on an ordinary, mundane existence punctuated with moments of pulse-pounding excitement and/or pisspants hilarity. Someday the two Koreas will be united, and it will be hard for my grandchildren to understand what I was doing on the DMZ, lying in my sleeping bag and listening to the ridiculous North Korean loudspeakers trying to convince me or my buddies to defect. In fact, it was hard for me to understand what I was even doing there at the time! This book will help me bridge that generational divide with my future heirs, and for that I thank the author.
