I had been used to thinking of her time there as a kind of desert or exile, since she evidently did no writing there, but Ms. Zielinski puts forth the intriguing hypothesis that Austen spent her time in Bath storing up observations that eventually made their way into her books. Ms Zielinski sketches a picture of the city of Bath for us in a way that helps us picture both Austen and her characters there. Though this is not an introduction to the life and work of Jane Austen, "Finding Jane Austen in Bath" is a valuable, if brief, addition to the literature about this part of Austen's life and it's effect on her work.
