Excerpt from Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences, Vol. 1: A Yearly Report of the Progress of the General Sanitary Sciences Throughout the WorldIn presenting the second issue of the Annual to the medical profession, to whose generous support its remarkable success is due, the editor wishes to state that, profiting by the suggestions of the patrons of the work, carefully gathered through the publishing department, he has been able to introduce several new features of importance. The first of these is calculated to greatly facilitate research. To each reference has been added the date, number, or volume of the journal quoted. Each periodical referred to directly, indirectly, or through the corresponding staff is represented by a number in the list at the end of the work, and this number is used in the text whenever the journal is quoted. By a system of double-checking each reference has been verified and everything done to make this feature of the work as perfect as practicable. The second addition is made for the especial benefit of those members of the profession who are not familiar with the foreign weights, measures, and thermometric systems. Grammes have been reduced to ounces, drachms, grains, etc., and Centigrade and Réaumur thermometric measurements to that of Fahrenheit, both systems appearing side by side. Owing to the large foreign circulation which the Annual enjoys, counter-reductions have also been made to render perusal of the work by our foreign friends more agreeable to them. The third innovation consists of a complete and compact index to each volume, in addition to the full triple index of the entire work at the end of the last volume, as given in the issue of 1888.In introducing these changes, the editor is but carrying out the original programme of the undertaking.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fascinating view of Victorian medical thought and practice By Kathleen Breimayer This multi volume journal of medical science reveals a world both familiar and foreign to current practitioners. The Journal was an annual compendium of the year's developments and discoveries, some of which remain valid today, others seeming bizarre or even torturous. It was published by F.A. Davis in Philadelphia by the Medical Bulletin Printing House on quality paper with clearly legible fonts, engravings illustrate where necessary some of which are colored. Binding is relatively plain for the era. The editor apologizes for any shortcomings with the caveat that this volume compiles over 50,000 articles by practitioners located all over the globe, some of whose submissions did not translate to English easily, duplicated each other with or without conflicting results, were poorly written or lately received. Without modern correspondence and computers this must have been a massive undertaking to publish each year.Volume One for 1888 covers Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord, Peripheral Nervous Diseases, Diseases of the Heart and Pericardium, Fevers, Diseases of the Mouth, (an oddly short section), Diseases of the Stomach, of the Liver, of the Intestines and Peritoneum, Animal Parasites and their Effects, Diseases of the Blood and Spleen, Rheumatism and Gout, Diabetes; Diseases Suprarenal Capsules, of the Kidneys and Bladder, Urinalysis, and Mental Diseases.This is not a volume that will make a lot of sense to the layman. Highly recommended to the curious historian of medicine or physicians collecting devices and books from the past.
