Steve Williams, for a first time author has spun a tale that includes all the great American virtues including faith, patriotism, family, baseball, and social change.. It is 1932, a time of economic turmoil and change in the American way of life. The Millers are caught up it with their absolute faith in God and the rightness of their causes. While the story is primarily about two twelve year old children, it is the back story lead by Cicero and Isaac Miller that holds us fast. On a stormy spring evening a former Negro league all star pitcher comes to their home. His purpose is to find a place on Cicero and Isaac's baseball team for them to play. The Great Midwest has seven teams all made up of white men who with the support of the Klan want to exclude the two Jackson boys from playing in the league. Only the intervention of "Slew Foot" Bemis, the league star does the Miller's prevail and the Jackson's are admitted. Later, when Isaac, the Principal of the local high school plans to integrate the boys into his school he does so with opposition from members of the community. It is a great read and I urge people not to ignore this book.

I was so excited when the book came out that I bought 5 to gift my children and grandchildren. It is a wholesome Christian based fiction that portrays rural midwestern life in the 1930’s that stimulate memories for some and enlightenment for the younger.It is a perfect gift to all and yourself!
