From the deepest depths of punk rock's 1970s primordial wastelands, through the stygian goth swamps of the 1980s, and on into the bloodstained arenas of 1990s heavy metal, Eerie Von witnessed it all. Beginning as the unofficial photographer for punk legends The Misfits and later taking charge of the bass guitar as a founding member of underground pioneers Samhain and metal gods Danzig, the evil eye of Eerie Von's camera captured the dark heart of rock's most vital and bleeding-edge period, a time when rock and roll was not only dangerous, but downright menacing. Eerie Von's lens has documented everything from The Misfits' humble beginnings in Lodi, New Jersey, to the heights of Danzig's stadium-rock glory alongside metal superstars Metallica. As well as an essential visual document of music history, Eerie's road stories of triumph and damnation bring to life an era the likes of which will never again be seen.

By Eric Blair Since the first time I heard The Misfits in middle school, I've been obsessed with everything Glenn Danzig has done. I spent so many of my formative years reading articles, interviews, and timelines and looking for little relics that have peeked out of obscurity for a moment, only to be pounced on by fans. But in all of this research and love and lore, I'd never felt as connected to the musical legacy as I did when I got this book. It's amazing to see all of these great photos taken at some of the most iconic moments by a guy who was there through it all. Eerie Von is THE Danzig historian. This is his passion, his dream, this was his life, and I'm so happy that he and Dark Horse books decided to share it with us.The books is nicely sized and doesn't feel skimpy for the price. It's chock full of photographs and personal anecdotes about the bands and photos. It's very well designed, which is something I don't expect from such a niche product as this. It seems to bring new life to these great old photos.I'm still amazed and delighted that this book was published. I couldn't imagine any fiend's library being without it.

You have to know, however, that I also created The Misfits coffin-box set and am a major fan of all the bands this book covers (The Misfits, Samhain & Danzig). Throughout the process, from going through every negative, slide and print in Eerie's collection - it was an eye-opening experience. I heard the stories first-hand from The Misfits, Eerie and Chuck before, but now I'm seeing them for the first time. As I put everything in order and debated with Eerie on what was to be included or set aside, I was like a kid in a candy store. Eerie would write stories and captions for the pages I designed and I was so excited to see an email come through with more that I could read, more to soak in and so much more to learn. Even with all that I had done with these band's camps over the years in the music industry, this book expanded my world with every page and every chapter. If you love these bands... if you love punk rock, hardcore and metal... if you love great photography like Glenn Friedman... THIS is your book. I'm blessed to have had anything to do with this part of the legacy, I tell you. Classic.

Any Misfits, Samhain or Danzig fan needs this book By Wyluli Misery Obscura is a true credit to Eerie Von's photography - there are so many great photos in this book.. A few that we have seen, and many that we have not. They are all spectacular. This book has the feel of a coffee-table style book with so many great photos to flip through, that I could enjoy for hours just paging through it and not reading a single word. But Eerie's stories about the shows, his times with the band, how Samhain became Danzig, etc. all add an extra dimension that really take you back to 1981, and lead you through the years to 1995 when the original Danzig lineup disbanded, and beyond.Misery Obscura really is a nice little time capsule that will always have a spot on my book shelf. As a hardcore Misfits & Danzig fan (Samhain's pretty cool too), this was the best money I've ever spent. As another reviewer pointed out, I only wish there was more, because I didn't want the book to end.Well done, Mr. Von!
