I’ve always liked short stories, short shorts, and flash fiction. The investment of time is on the briefer side, and often just as rewarding as a novel. I’ve penned a few, myself, and selected my personal favorites, including a couple of flashes. All the selections involve murder, suspense, surprise or chicanery. Some stories have pretty unlikely heroes, such as an English bulldog named Jemma. Some learn and grow, some go to jail, some die, some profit from other people’s villainy. The common thread is their humanness, even the dog’s. I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I enjoyed writing them.

From the Author This is a collection of work I've done other than novels. I hope it gives the reader a chance to see a glimpse of another side of me. While most are lighthearted, not all involve a murder and there are one or two with a slightly more serious take on things. All of them have a special meaning to me, whether it be crime doesn't pay, crime does pay or life can be tough, but nevertheless wonderful. Corliss happens to be my favorite protagonist to date. Someday I may expand the story into a novel. Jemma and the Shoe is a tribute to one of the more special dogs I've ever known. For the brief time readers read her tale (tail?) she is alive again, just like my Tugger is in the Alvarez Family Murder Mysteries.

About the Author Heather Haven attended the University of Miami and ended up as a writer in New York City, writing humorous commercials and ad copy for No Soap Radio.  There she fulfilled her dream of writing comedy and getting paid for it. She has also written comedy acts for performers, television treatments, and off-off Broadway plays. She is the acclaimed author of the multi-award winning humorous Alvarez Family Murder Mystery series, which takes place in California's Silicon Valley. Book One, Murder is a Family Business, was winner of the Single Titles Review's Choice Award 2011. The second, A Wedding to Die For, was a finalist in both EPIC and Global Mystery awards 2012, and the third, Death Runs in the Family, was the winner of the Global Gold for Best Mystery Fiction 2013. The fourth book of the series, DEAD...If Only, debuted October 2014 and is receiving rave reviews. Another humorous series, The Persephone Cole Vintage Mysteries, takes place in New York City during World War II. The Dagger Before Me and Iced Diamonds, were #1 in both Amazon's Historical Mystery and General Humorous categories, October 2013. The third book of the series, The Chocolate Kiss-Off, will be released soon.  Her stand-alone mystery noir and winner of the Silver IPPY Best Mystery/Thriller 2014, Death of a Clown, is based upon her mother's memories of performing with Ringling Brothers' Circus, circa 1942. Heather lives in the foothills of San Jose with her husband of thirty-three years, and their two cats, Yulie (Yul Bryner, King of Siam) and Ellie (Elphaba, Queen of da Nile).

Goldberg Heather Haven is renowned for her mysteries, so rich in character, setting, snappy dialogue, and deliciously arch humor. Now we get to meet Heather as a short story writer, and it is a delightful meeting. This is truly a box of confections. Each story is a delicious surprise, from the flash fiction to the more developed works. I can only wish it were longer, and happily hope for more to come.

Instantly drawn into another time and place By Kemberlee Lugo Shortland I picked up this book because I'm such a fan of Heather Haven's Alvarez Mysteries, and this story was labeled 'A Short Humorous Suspense Story.' I was just going to take a brief look before bed and ended up staying up until I'd finished. This story is a far cry from the Alvarez Mysteries. And I wouldn't call any of it humorous. This is as serious as it comes. The voice in this story is unique and distinct. I was instantly drawn into another time and place. Another culture. Corliss is a product of her social class, a woman who's had a mix of lucks in her life. But she's smart and learns to stand on her own two feet, even if it means sacrifices. This is as much a tale of love as redemption. This is a tale well-told tale with understanding and empathy. A must read!

I still have a collection of short stories from grammar school that is tattered and torn from rereading. Corliss struck me the same way. To so quickly get inside a character to the point where you think you could recognize him or her on the street, live a vignette or longer in the life of that character, and have that character stay with you to the point where you want to know more is a magical talent. Heather Haven has given me another book to reread until it's tattered and torn.I love the Alvarez mysteries, but these stories have a charm that even wild, sophisticated, glamorous Lee Alvarez can't duplicate (I can't even picture Corliss ever owning a pair of high heels.)Thanks, Heather, keep them coming!
