By George Kaplan Editor Brent Edstrom has done a wonderful job creating piano arrangements for these 21 tunes, then wrapping them around actual transcribed Horace Silver piano solos. Bravissimo! Many of the usual suspects are here (Song for My Father, Nica's Dream, Peace et al). But what really makes this volume nice is the presence of some rarae aves, like Sighin' and Cryin' (a back-woods blues from 1964) and Cool Eyes. It's nice to see some of Mr. Silver's deep cuts gains the spotlight one in a while! I also like how Mr. Edstrom is incredibly meticulous in spelling out the chords just right (although I do disagree with the first chord in Sister Sadie, a 7 sharp 11th to these ears).I guess my only quibble is with The Preacher. The arrangement is a dumbed-down version of the actual one and omits, for some reason, Horace's galloping left hand. And the solo presented is Kenny Dorham's trumpet solo. Hmm.All in all, a wonderful contribution to the Silver canon and a fitting tribute to the man. For the inquiring pianist, there are 3 additional Horace Silver piano folios that have been published over the years. Two (published by Hansen House) are out of print at the moment (but can be found on eBay) and another is currently in print and available on Amazon.

These were disappointingly plainJane lead structures. This volume, however, is ready for immediate playing on stage. Fully annotated transcriptions - It has full chord structures which provide THE Horace Silver personality to each of the pieces along with nice subtleties. In short - if you like or love Horace, do yourself a favor and obtain or steal a copy of this compilation of tunes. Here are all the pieces (which can also be seen on the Hal Leonard website). I was particularly impressed with the nuances in Sighin' and Cryin', Nica's Dream, and The Cape Verdean Blues. I was disappointed that Strollin' was not included.Contents:The Cape Verdean BluesCool EYesDoodlin'Filthy McNastyFor Heaven's SakeHow Long Has This Been Going On?The Jody GrindJuicy LucyLonely WomanNica's DreamNutvilleOpus De FunkPeaceThe PreacherQue PasaSenor BluesSighin' and Cryin'Sister SadieSong For My FatherThou SWellThe Tokyo Blues

I'm a Horace Silver fan but because I have enjoyed everything else in this remarkable series By Gregory Whitfield I purchased this not because I'm a Horace Silver fan but because I have enjoyed everything else in this remarkable series. When playing I prefer tunes I recognize, especially from the Great American Songbook. So I was quite delighted when I played through this volume and enjoyed the sound of the "unfamiliar". But because I listen to KCSM, a great jazz FM station, I am more than used to bebop and even recognized some of his tunes. I don't know how the arranger can be so talented in so many types of jazz but he is. Now I think I'll order the Hard Bop volume because I think I'll like it. Oh yeah--now I'm a Horace Silver fan!
