About the Author Brian Sutton is the author of the musical comedy “Searching for Romeo,” which enjoyed successful runs in New York City in 2014 and in Green Bay, WI, in 2012. Two of his one-act plays, the comedy “Running Mates” and the musical revue “Can I Buy You a Drink?,” were successfully staged together in De Pere, WI, in 2012. Brian has sold nonfiction to Playboy, Seventeen, and smaller regional magazines; his fiction and nonfiction have appeared in various literary quarterlies; and his scholarly writing has appeared in numerous academic journals. He won three Hopwood Awards for creative writing at The University of Michigan. His original songs appear on three CDs by his band, Rough Draft. Ph.D. in English, Ohio State University. He is a member of the English faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He lives in Green Bay with his wife, Jan; they have two daughters, Molly and Chelsea.

Fun and light-hearted Romeo and Juliet spin-off By shakespeareteacher Sutton’s play is a delightful take on the previously off-stage stories of Romeo and Juliet’s rejected lovers: Paris and Rosaline (here Perry and Roz, which allows for the line “a Roz by any other name”). Speaking from the perspective of a Shakespeare enthusiast, I enjoyed playing “spot the reference” with the wide variety of humorous send-ups from across the Shakespeare canon and beyond, such as the gag where Lady Capulet says “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” only to be reminded on stage that “That’s not Shakespeare.” Later, when Lady Capulet tries out another line (“The course of true love never did run smooth”), she checks to make sure she is now quoting the “correct” playwright. The flashback device—the play begins and ends in a high school classroom—allows for a comedic ending to Romeo and Juliet. Though the play quotes and alludes to a number of Shakespeare plays, it does still connect to its source play—Romeo and Juliet—by staying close to the timeline of the play and appropriating several famous scenes (such as the balcony scene) as background material for Roz and Perry’s love story.The show is appropriate for younger audiences and, since it draws from the play most frequently taught in high school classrooms, would make for a good production in that setting. Bawdy and other “mature” material, such as Friar Lawrence’s solo “I Like Drugs,” is included as an appendix.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Delightful New Play By Drama Fan SEARCHING FOR ROMEO is a wonderful comedy based on ROMEO AND JULIET. Framed around an assignment to read Shakespeare's tragedy in a high school class, the play both references numerous of Shakespeare's plays, and stands alone. The theme is one that students can, and do relate to, stated best by Roz: "I want a guy I can kiss before we go out to dinner, and I'm still hungry! I know it sounds crazy, but for love to last, I need somebody ordinary." The theme of losing, and then finding love is touching and accessible—particularly since the "ordinary guy" (Paris/Perry) gets the girl, even though it means standing up to his money-grubbing mom. This theme is set against a backdrop of the crazy-in-love Romeo and Juliet, with Roz and Perry coming out the winners. SEARCHING FOR ROMEO is truly an extraordinary play, one that is both witty and engaging. I taught it to college freshman Introduction to Literature students, as well as senior Shakespeare students. They all loved it, and I'm sure high school students would as well. For those interested in taking the next step and putting on this fantastic show, the music (also by Sutton) is marvelous and memorable.
