1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A World Without Mercy By Carolyn Kern I absolutely loved this play! I was glued to the pages and could not put it down! Read on and see why.The play starts from the awkward introduction of Elizabeth at Kelly's LA apartment. Elizabeth is searching for answers following the death of her daughter, Tracy. Kelly had taken Tracy with her on a trip to South America as activists to help the U'wa Indians. Kelly returned, and Tracy did not. The play then unfolds as they come to grips with the past and their differences. Throughout their journey, the play flashes back to how Tracy and Kelly met and what resulted in the fatal trip to South America.I am very very picky about my plays. There are only a few that I can't put down. The types of plays that I like include Tennessee Williams, Tracy Letts, Marsha Norman, Beth Henley, and now Johnna Adams is in that category.I read a little more about the author, and I can see why I like this play so much. It is not just written by another writer, but someone who got her BFA in Acting. The dialogue is very well written. The characters are three dimensional, and their is a shared humanity that is discovered between Kelly and Elizabeth. The play is delved out in juicy little morsels, going from past to present. A lot can be learned through this play, while also keeping you entertained and engulfed in the story. The title Sans Merci comes from the poem "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" by Keats. It has an important part in the play, in that it was Tracy's favorite poem by her favorite author Keats. But the title really encompasses the whole theme of the play. As Tracy says in the play, "The dream of a world without mercy, without mercy, without pity, has left the poor knight alone and pale...But there is an unstated optimism to the poem. If the lonely, pale, withered, and silent mood Keats creates is brought about by the lack of pity and mercy in the world, there is an implied opposite. If only someone brought mercy and pity to the world, then it might blossom forth."Only when we are kind to others, when we are not bitter, do we reconcile our differences. Once Kelly and Elizabeth see each other with mercy and kindness do they finally come to grips with their current situation.
