In this 30th anniversary edition of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks, M.D. brings together more than two dozen narratives of patients with many different neurological impairments. The narratives illuminate medical details of the diseases while illustrating how those diseases play out in a patient’s thoughts and actions, bringing a more human aspect to the ailments.

These neurological impairments take on many forms. Losses can be highly disruptive to a patient’s life, such as Jimmie G.’s severe memory loss. However, many patients find ways to adapt to their ailments and recoup those losses in other ways, such as Mr. P., a music teacher who lost his ability to distinguish faces and objects, even mistaking his wife for his hat, who learned to sing to himself to keep from becoming disoriented. And MacGregor, who installed a level on his glasses to enable him to stand upright to correct a persistent lean…

The original contains "more than two dozen narratives of patients with many different neurological impairments". In this summary, readers are treated to eight Key Takeaways which are discussed in further detail. Here are two to whet your appetite:>>> #1 - "While diseases have mainly been described in the form of a case history, this format does not always lend itself to explaining the totality of how a disease affects a patient. A narrative, on the other hand, humanizes illness and explains them in a way a case history does not.">>> #6 - "Reminiscence can have both positive and negative effects on patients depending on what the reminiscence does for the patient. particularly if it conjures up certain memories."A narrative is very different from a case history. Although some brief examples are provided, this Instaread summary does not, obviously, include the detailed narratives. How would you feel if reminiscence caused you to remember murdering your girlfriend? Could you live with that? Dennis had to! (He had originally been blacked out on drugs.)The original book is split into four sections covering a "different category of neurological pathology". Oliver Sacks was an author and neurologist who just passed away in August 2015. Maybe you don't need to read all the details but just want to get the gist of what the original book is all about? Maybe you've read the original and need to refresh your memory? Whatever your reason, this is a great summary. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

One of my favorite books and it's incredibly interesting. Picked up this summary guide and it makes the reading experience so much easier. It added some additional insight that made the book more interesting as well. Absolutely love this and would recommend the summary guide to anyone interested in these case studies. For those interested in mental health and have heard of Dr. Sacks and his case studies this guide is a must read. Highly recommended.

Many of the pages were blank and the footnotes were entirely left out. I finally gave up and bought a paper copy to read instead. I know this space is for a review but I am hoping someone who can help with a refund will see it. I advice anyone who is thinking of buying it for their Kindle to buy a paper one instead. Is this a problem with other books too?
