Although the title is Joseph II, the first half of the book is really about Maria Theresa and her reign and ministers, with Joseph, her son, being somewhat of a lesser character. The first half also deals with Maria's daughter Marie Antoinette's time in France. This book is fiction but most of the persons are historically real and the nice thing about the book is that many of the conversations are footnoted as to their reliability and source. So this is fiction with historical footnotes. I loved this book because it covers about everything going on in the period -- the Seven Years War, the partition of Poland, Mesmer and his purported healing, peasants and their lives, Gluck and his music, unhappy marriages, court etiquette in Vienna and France, Frederick the Great, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Catherine the Great, expulsion of the Jesuits, etc. It is a remarkable book that is a complete and evocative canvas of the reigns of Maria Theresa and Joseph II in the zenith of the Austrian empire. Nothing is omitted.

By Amazon Customer I found this a fascinating, detailed, richly entertaining as well as informative history of the Viennese era -- the last days of the Habsburgs and the culture in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent his most productive years.
