The Art of Speaking Southern encourages us to stop and think of a time not so long ago, a time of gentleness and innocence. It is filled with sayings and phrases from grandparents and grandchildren alike, some personal and some we are not quite sure where they came from or if they have any meaning at all. Most are as common as cornbread. Those of us who grew up in the 40's and 50's will recognize some of them and they will hopefully bring back special moments in our lives; memories of when children could walk to town, movies were nine cents, and our lives were filled with good strong values; times when a handshake was binding and you were always greeted with a smile and a howdy. Children spent their evenings playing outside, and friends and neighbors sat in the yard and visited. Domino games were played and after Sunday services there was often dinner on the ground – do you remember that? As we grow older our friendships and these sayings are our connection to these memories, especially the older phrases we learned at an early age. They are not heard so often now, but still hold a value and are part of our Southern culture. This is an effort to educate our children and preserve some of the past that we often take for granted.
