My Favorite Book - A Monster Kid Dream Come True By Doug Kennedy Imagine if you will being a small boy on a 1940's Hollywood movie set watching dinosaurs fighting tooth and nail before your very eyes. Now imagine becoming friendly with the Hollywood prop creator/special effects wizard who built those dinosaurs. Now imagine that same man handing over to you the Wolf Man's cane seen in Universal Studios THE WOLF MAN (1941) as a gift. Before you can say "Gee Whiz!" , you're off and running into the pages of MONSTER KID MEMORIES, by Bob Burns and Tom Weaver.MONSTER KID MEMORIES is my favorite book. I have read it cover to cover at least five times and it is my go-to comfort book ("I have to fly to Vegas for work this week? MONSTER KID MEMORIES is going with me."). Bob Burns and Tom Weaver have put together a heart-warming look back at the fairytale life of movie fan Bob Burns. Bob began meeting some of his Hollywood heroes and favorite behind-the-scenes movie magicians (special effects artists) in the 1940's and he never looked back. In MONSTER KID MEMORIES, we read all about Bob's friendships with legendary producer-director GEORGE PAL (The War Of The Worlds, The Time Machine); Glenn Strange (the actor who portrayed Frankenstein's monster in such Universal Studios classics as Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein), who became like a second father to Bob; FORREST TUCKER and LARRY STORCH, with whom Bob co-starred (as a gorilla!) in the 1970's Saturday morning kids show The Ghost Busters; WILLIAM CASTLE, the king of the "gimmick" horror movies, with whom Bob got to help hot wire movie theater seats for the shocking effects of Castle's film The Tingler; Universal Studios make-up genius JACK PIERCE; the men who made the Republic Studios serials; Hollywood's greatest "gorilla guy" Charlie Gemora; and so many more!If you've ever wondered what it was like to sit at a table for an afternoon with BORIS KARLOFF, LON CHANEY JR., and ELSA LANCHESTER, than MONSTER KID MEMORIES is for you. If you've ever wanted to put on Halloween recreations of your favorite monster movies in your own back yard so amazingly realistic that the stars of the films themselves stop by to take a peek, than MONSTER KID MEMORIES is for you. If you grew up with a sense of wonder about the magic of your favorite movies and wished with all your heart that you could become friendly with the people responsible for bringing those movies to life, order a copy of MONSTER KID MEMORIES right now and become a part of the enchanted world of BOB BURNS, his amazing wife KATHY BURNS, and all their cool friends. - Doug Kennedy, Brooklyn, NY

Sargent IT CAME FROM BOB'S BASEMENT is a great, over-sized book filled with color photos and stories relating to Bob's lifelong fascination and involvement with special effects, monsters and all sorts of special effects from the time of the early weekly serials to the very recent big-budget films. The photos from his scrapbook and of his incredible collection of memerobilia far outweigh the text in that book, although he makes reference to many other experiences he had as a kid, an actor, stunt monster, and meetings with filmmakers and actors. The stories he referenced in the first book are flushed out here in this book. There are still lots of great (black and white) photos that accompany the stories, but the focus is more on the text this time. The man seem to have known everyone from Ray "Crash" to George Pal to his mentor and father-figure, actor Glenn Strange who played Frankenstein's monster after the first 3 or so Universal films and appeared in tons of TV and film Westerns. Bob concentrated much more on his relationship with the late, great Paul Blaisdell in the earlier book, but he does have a bit more about him here. This is a nostalgic read for fans who are familiar with some of the old serials, sci-fi and horror films, and TV monster movie hosts. You'll find personal recollections about William Castle, Charlie "gorilla guy" Gemora, Elsa Lanchester, Boris Karloff, Larry Storch, and many, many more heroes to those of us who loved the weird genres. There's more about his collection and annual Halloween set-ups that delighted the neighbors for miles. This is a good, fun and enjoyable read. Bob is a great guy whom everyone he met seems to have taken to immediately, giving him work in films along with lots of amazing memerobilia from both low-budget films and the most beloved classics. His collection even includes items from "Aliens" and "Terminator 2," so it's not just old stuff. Oh, did I mention he has the original metal skeleton of the miniature King Kong as well?I enjoyed Bob's stories and am extremely happy they have been documented in his own unique way of telling them. This is a great book for those of us who are "overaged kids with wild imaginations."
