Pogroms By William Garrison Jr. Regarding the 1999 second edition (not the original 1968 ed.): This is a l92-page, small size (4.5"x7") paperback containing about 400 instances since the death of Jesus whereby some Christian mob has molested, maimed, tortured, killed and looted the property of Jews (for being collectively condemned as `Christ killers') - primarily in Europe. Each incident is described in a brief paragraph: the number assaulted, which city, when and what caused to pogrom to occur. Besides noting locations, anti-Semitic utterances or publications by specific authors are listed (St. Augustine, various popes, Martin Luther, etc.) Specific anti-Jew sentences in the New Testament are listed, too. After reading this, one realizes that the 1930s German Nazi movement was not an aberration. Few WWII massacres are noted, simply too many for this small booklet. Not in chronological order. Just enough info here to entice a reader to begin searching for more scholarly books. While each instance is not specifically referenced, a 3-page bibliography is included.

Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask By For Two Cents Plain Dr. Dagobert Runes, founder of the Philosophical Library and author of the popular Dictionary of Philosophy, was also an early refugee from the growing antisemitic climate in Austria before the rise of Hitler. Both Dr. Runes and his wife lost most of their families and friends, who remained in Europe, during the Holocaust. Runes understood that this bloody antisemitism was rooted in attitudes created primarily by the Catholic Church and later by Martin Luther and other Protestant leaders. Runes went to great lengths to document these facts in this, his second important dictionary, which boldly delineates what his contemporary, Maurice Samuel, called "The Great Hatred." This is a book that should not be forgotten -- although Nostra Aetate, which thankfully Runes lived to see, was a giant-step toward bringing about the historic reconciliation of Christians and Jews and hopefully the end to such institutionalized hatred. May this book serve as a reminder to the world never to revert to these evils attitudes.
