0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bravo! Masterfully Done!! By C. W. Lovatt When I first came across Mr. Hawkes' work, I thought that it was well-polished, witty, and intelligent. I don't know how he's managed it, but somehow, with "Our Lies Are Better Than Theirs," he's contrived to get even better, and I'm not just saying that because he mentions Canada in his book, either - twice. In places, the laughter is gut-busting, tempered masterfully with the more tongue in cheek variety that keeps the story moving along famously, until it was over before I realized it...which I thought was a pity.True to form, Hawkes takes a playful jab at the greed and corruption of the establishment, who were good enough to supply him with an entirely new list of bungles, b.s. and baloney in record time, and they don't look to be slowing down either. Also, true to form, beneath the levity is a serious message: this stuff is really going on (and not just in Great Britain, either) and it has to stop.This is all very commendable, and is written at least as well as his other books, but something that I noticed in this one is that he also tackles some of the nastier bits of corruption head-on, and he does it very well, and without flinching, either. He makes us look, not only at the corruption of the powerful, but also at the apathy in ourselves, who allow it to go on. That takes courage, my friends, and should not go unrecognised. If you do not come away with anything else after reading this book, come away with that.In closing, I would like to mention that the epilogue, written by Alison Green, was both masterful and imaginative. I'm confident that she will be someone we must look out for in the future.Bravo! Very well done, indeed!
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant. By G Ramsey Has Mr Hawkes done it again? Yep, I think he has! This book rattles you through the murky world of international politics and dares to talk about the things we must not speak of. It tears limb from limb the politicians, their policies and promises, and aims punch after punch at the systems in place. It left me exhausted! Mr Hawkes uses his unique brand of humour to keep you turning those pages, and I don't think there is anyone out there, with his skill of measured satire, that does it better.
