About the Author Bitten by the writing bug at the tender age of six, Blanch's literary ambitions suffered setbacks from anxious English teachers, hoping to preserve some continuity and/or common comprehension of the language, and interruptions by protracted stints as life insurance salesman (six years), entre-preneur/printer (twenty years), composer (ten years), actor (dabbled for five or six years), beekeeper (ten years), non-profit director - television producer (fifteen years), and a long, long time na-ture photographer, none of which derailed a stream of short stories, poetry, plays, novels, and commercial writing. In Blanch's own words, "The path to anonymity has not been easy."

Frederick Blanch's past is offered, alphabetized, as small treasures seemingly priceless to his heart. He showcases each word or phrase as bits of his Minnesotan life, and as special enough to have each earned a place of interest to readers of Last Words - Frederick's Bionary. Each chapter defines a word (or phrase) from the "World According to Frederick" until one like "root beer" or "patience"jettisons off to an entertaining tale.Many of us have terms as remembrances that have meaning or sentimental value but, I dare say, few of us would be able to say too much, let alone delve into the deeper meaning of life, from a word or phrase. For Blanch it isn't the places and the facts that matter; it's people, creatures and nature, in general.This book is about connections. Connections Blanch cares about, relationships important to him, woven from his life and the adventures that have enriched his life--and the lives of his readers or, in the sake of his other artistic work; music, photography and silk-screening, his listeners and viewers.Unashamedly frank, Blanch shares perspectives revolving around the words he's chosen. The writing flows, a bit like free association, a bit like poetry, but always with a purpose, to inform the world...about him and his life. These relationships would be of particular interest to those growing up in the mid-west, but as stated in the title above, this is a great book to have around to pick up and read, whenever.In fact, the book arrives full-circle taking the reader intimately through parts of Blanch's life, complicated and rich with experience, to present day. For a man who seems to love a life of uncertain unruliness, cantankerousness, and self-directedness, Blanch shows us, at times, a soft underbelly and vulnerability. Tender, especially, is his relationship or, rather, lack of relationship, with his father.I would state that Last Words-Frederick's Bionary is written with humor and sorrow, a soft gentleness as well as a razor sharp steely edge, providing moments of sadness and moments that bring a smile--yes, even LOL moments, but never with an apology for who Blanch, himself, is. It's a poignant read set out to entertain and engage. It does.

By Jun Tai Fun reading and yet emotional as told from the writer's commentary on his life and upbringing through this ingenious use of the bionary. This person gives so much insight into his personality, intelligence and experiences that it would be a privilege to meet him in order to listen to more of his life's definitions.
